The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the theme of the conference was: “Sustainable Development Goals and Eye Care Delivery in Nigeria”.
Nwosu identified the major causes of blindness to include glaucoma, cataracts and infections, as well as poor nutrition.
He urged Nigerians to always cultivate the habit of preventive measures to keep their sight in sound condition.
According to him, when the eyes turn red, people should avoid applying anything not recommended by eye specialist into them.
“When an eye turns red, do not put something such as kerosine, urine, traditional medicine or anything not recommended by a specialist into it.
“In such a situation, go to an eye specialist nearest to you and find out why it turned red to avoid complications.
“People should look around, once there is something whitish in their eye, that is cataract, they should visit an eye doctor in any general hospital.
“Do not go to just some people, who will put needle in the eye, it will spoil the eye,” Nwosu advised.
He advised parents to ensure that their children eat carrot and palm oil always to strengthen their eyesights.
“All these contain vitamin A that is good for the eye, therefore, our children should be eating them regularly because they actually aid their eyesights,’’ he said. (NAN)
