Shoplifter faces N46, 000 phone theft charge

Lagos, May 16, 2018(NAN) A 22-year-old man, Olanrewaju Olajuwon, who allegedly stole a mobile phone
valued at N46, 500 from a shop, was on Wednesday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

The accused, a bricklayer and a resident of  No. 6, Oke Arin St., Oshodi, Lagos, is being tried for conspiracy
and stealing .

Police Prosecutor Innocent Odugbo had told the court that the offences were committed on May 12 at 5, Fatunbi
St., Kola area of Alagbado, a suburb of Lagos.

Odugbo said the accused with another man still at large went to a pharmacy and pretended to buy some drugs.

He said the complainant, Mr Tunde Lawal, was about going to the counter to bring the drugs they requested and
noticed that one of the accused had left with something from his shop.

According to him, while the other accused was still standing, the complainant turned back only to discover
that his Infinix hot note mobile phone valued at N46, 500 is missing.

“The accused quickly shouted for help and with the help of some passersby, he was apprehended, while his
other accomplice escaped with the phone.”

He said the accused was later taken to a nearby police station.

The offences contravened Section 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 provides three years jail term, while Section 411
prescribes two years.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Magistrate, Mrs S. K. Matepo, granted the accused bail of N50, 000 with one surety in like sum and
adjourned the case until May 23. (NAN)
