Confession

Beirut, Dec. 18, 2017 (dpa/NAN) The suspect arrested Monday for the killing of British diplomat Rebecca Dykes in Lebanon has confessed, a judicial source close to the investigation told dpa.

“At first the suspect denied and then he confessed that he tried to rape the victim and when she fought him back he killed her,” the source said.

Police tracked the last call the victim made on her phone late Friday when she left a bar in Beirut’s Gemmayzeh neighbourhood and found it was the suspected taxi driver.

Street cameras tracked his license and found that he took a road to northeastern Beirut where the body was found.

The crime was being treated as a criminal case and, so far, appears that it was not politically motivated, the source said.

Dykes,  was found on the side of a highway in north-eastern Lebanon on Saturday afternoon, and police identified her on Sunday.

Dykes was last seen on Friday night in a bar called “Demo” with a female friend in the Gemmayzeh neighbourhood.

On LinkedIn, Dykes said she was working for Britain’s Department for International Development and was also a policy manager with the Libya team at the Foreign Office. (dpa/NAN)
