Sandamu (Katsina state)Sept 12 2018 (NAN)Sandamu Local Government Council of Katsina State says UNICEF has sponsored the drilling of 12 additional boreholes in the area put at N9 million.
Malam Sani Maiadua, the Director of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene(WASH) told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)in Sandamu on Wednesday that the provision of the additional boreholes would boost supply of clean water in the benefiting communities.
NAN reports that 245 boreholes had been drilled in Sandamu LGA over the last 16 year through counterpart funding from UNICEF and the state government.
He listed the benefiting communities to include Kwadage Sabon Fegi, Fago, Nasarawa, Sandamu Kofar Gabas, Sandamu Shaiskawa, Sandamu Kofar Kada and Jarkuka Ragade .
Others are: Jarkuka Yamma, Jarkuka Baki Kasuwa, Dankarsani and Zugai Tasha.
The director gave assurance that the communities would start using the boreholes in a couple of weeks, stressing that the project had reached 80 per cent completion.
He said UNICEF and Katsina state government contributed the 50 per cent of the total cost of the project, with each borehole costing N700,000
Maiadua said the council had inaugurated a water safety plan team for each borehole comprised of 10 persons each to ensure effective maintenance and supervision of the water facilities.
According to him, the teams have been trained to manage and protect the boreholes against acts of vandalism and poor handling by members of the communities.
In a related development, 237 communities in the LGAs have been certified Open Defecation Free (ODF ) by UNICEF, with the exception of Zugai community.
Maiadua told NAN that efforts were in top gear to ensure that Zugai joins ODF communities.
He disclosed that the council has taken steps to clean up Fago slaughter slab where 85 per cent of meat being consumed in Sandamu and Daura LGAs were slaughtered and processed.
He advised the people of the area against unsanitary habits that may lead to outbreak of diseases like cholera. (NAN)
