Kano, Dec. 15, 2016 (NAN) The Royal Fistula Hospital (RFH), Nigeria, has since 2010 treated and empowered more than 350 fistula patients in collaboration with the Australian Government.
The RFH Nigeria Coordinator, Mr Muhammad Galadima, disclosed this in Kano on Thursday at the inauguration of RFH Nigeria, Kano centre, and fund raising ceremony.
He said the 20-bed space hospital has the capacity of treating 250 fistula patients annually.
“The project has a mobile clinic and will move from around fistula centres to treat patients and so far we have treated more than 350 patients.
“The World Health Organisation has confirmed that more than two million women and girls are living with the condition.
“Nigeria contributes to almost half of the global fistula cases where more than 800,000 girls and women are living with fistula,” he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that RFH Nigeria is a project established in 2010 to support the federal government in its effort to eliminate obstetric fistula in the country.
He expressed regrets that the cases were usually found in areas of Nigeria where maternal services are limited and preference for home delivery is the custom.
Earlier, the Australian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr Paul Layman, said his home Government had committed N7.5 million towards the building of the Royal Fistula Hospital Nigeria in Kano.
He said the Australian Government had decided to support the initiative in order to provide quality care to fistula patients in the state.
He said his country’s government would continue to support such initiative with a view to providing quality treatment for fistula patients and community awareness to ensure prevention and safe motherhood.
NAN also reports that the centre is established in Wata-Tazo Primary Health Centre, Kwalli, Sabuwar Kofa in Kano metropolis. (NAN)
