Threats
Tehran, Feb. 10, 2017 (dpa/NAN) Iranian President Hassan Rowhani dubbed President Donald Trump a “newcomer” and criticised U.S. policy on Iran, saying his nation would not tolerate threats.
Rowhani made this known in his speech in Tehran on Friday to mark the 38th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution.
Iran will react “rationally” to absurd allegations and threats from the U.S.
“We want no tensions, we are not a threat, but we will not tolerate threats and disrespect,” he said.
Rowhani warned that over the last 38 years, Tehran has always responded consistently to threats.
U.S.-Iranian relations have deteriorated in recent weeks.
On Feb. 1, the U.S. put Iran “on notice” after Tehran conducted a ballistic missile test.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry called the warning “baseless and provocative.”
The countries disagree as to whether the test is a violation of 2015 UN Security Council resolution 2231.
The resolution prohibits Iran from indulging in any activity related to ballistic missiles capable of delivering a nuclear weapon.
Tensions have also arisen over Trump’s travel ban on citizens from seven Muslim-majority countries, which include Iran.
Celebrations in Iran marking the 38th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution began Friday. In February 1979, an uprising led by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini resulted in the downfall of the monarchy.
This year’s demonstrations are expected to see particular criticism of Trump.
However several Iranians on social media have called for U.S. flags not to be burned as has been the case in past years.
In their view, the collective efforts of many U.S. citizens have led to the suspension of Trump’s travel ban.
