Jos, June 14, 2018 (NAN) The Rotary Club of District 9125 Jos Plateau, has sought for a partnership with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), in its efforts to eradicate polio in the state.
Mr. Elvis Chukwu, the governor-elect of the district, disclosed this on Thursday during a courtesy visit to the zonal office of NAN, in Jos.
He stated that NAN plays a critical role in enlightening the society on preventive measures of diseases, including polio.
He expressed confidence in the capacity of the agency to sensitise parents and guardians, especially those in the rural areas on the importance of the ongoing free polio immunisation campaign.
“ Rotary desires Nigeria to be polio free by 2019 but we need the partnership of NAN to sensitise parents especially in the rural areas on the importance of the immunisation to achieve this.
“The club also recently sponsored an open heart surgery in Enugu in its efforts to reduce the financial burden faced by indigent persons on medical expenses,’’ he said.
Chukwu said that the visit was aimed at seeking the cooperation of NAN, following his official take-over as the Governor of District 9125 on July 1.
“ The official year of rotary begins in July and worldwide, all districts and clubs are to change leadership to mark the New Year, and my official investiture would be on July 14.
“We have the largest district in Nigeria covering 23 states. We plan to execute interventions on health, education and the economy in the rural areas who mostly suffer hardship in accessing these necessities,’’ he said.
In his response, Mr Ephraim Sheyin, the Zonal Manager, NAN office Jos commended the organisation for its humanitarian services and promised to partner in discharging such responsibilities.
Sheyin who was represented by Mr Emmanuel Nwoye, an Assistant Editor in Chief (AIEC) said that NAN is a credible news agency with several local and international subscribers.
He congratulated the newly elected District Governor and wished him a productive tenure.
