Kiaiama (Bayelsa), Aug. 9, 2017 (NAN) Brig-Gen Suleiman Kazaure, the Director-General, National Youths Service Corps (NYSC), has advised corps members to always respect the tradition and culture of their host communities.
Kazaure gave the advice during an inspection tour of the orientation camp on Wednesday in Kaiama, Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area of Bayelsa.
The Director-General, represented by Mrs Josephine Okuonghae, the Director of Corps Welfare and Inspectorate, noted that respecting the host communities’ values was pertinent to promoting the objectives of the scheme.
Kazaure, who is on tour of the 2017 Batch ‘A’ Stream 11 orientation camp in Bayelsa also charged corps members to be more patriotic to move the nation forward.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Batch ‘A’ corps members, who are presently undergoing orientation, will complete the three-weeks training on Aug. 15.
“ I must advise you, in the course of your service year to obey and respect the tradition of your host communities.
“When you go to your places of primary assignments, do not begin to show them that you are more superior to them; you must not begin to make a mockery of their values.
“Always respect their ways of life and their traditions while their culture must be respected.
“By doing so, you integrate with other Nigerians, appreciate their ways of life and that justifies the establishment of the scheme.
“As you continue to live and abide by the rules of the camp, try to avail yourselves of opportunity for self-employment through the NYSC Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurial Development programme,’’ Kazaure said.
While inspecting the camp, the director-general said he was impressed by the structures and applauded the state government for supporting NYSC.
On the welfare of corps members, Kazaure said that the scheme planned to demand improved allowances for servicing corps members across the country.
Earlier, the NYSC Coordinator in Bayelsa, Mrs Loto Bolade, said that steps had been taken to make corps members comfortable at the temporary orientation camp in the state.
Bolade said that the orientation course had been hitch-free as the camp officials were working diligently to ensure the success of the orientation.
“Activities on camp are gradually coming to a climax in anticipation,’’ the coordinator said.
According to her, the corps members are highly disciplined, motivated and patriotic.
She thanked the D-G for supplying 200 double bunk beds for accommodation on camp and requested for release of 3,000 life jackets for the safety of corps members in Bayelsa.
According to him, the state is composed of 80 per cent coastal communities.
“In the course of the orientation, we have received supports from various bodies and state government.
“A podium was received from the Nigerian Air force, Bayelsa Mobility Command, 50 chairs came from Ecobank, while drugs were donated by the African University and Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa among others,’’ she said. (NAN)
