Abuja, Feb. 22, 2017 (NAN) Some residents of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have expressed reactions to the use of smart phone especially by the youths, saying it can promote societal growth if used positively.
The residents, who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Wednesday, said that smart phones could be used positively or negatively.
A Smart phone is a device with an advanced mobile operating system that combines features of a personal computer operating system with other features useful for mobile or handheld use.
Smart phones, which are pocket-sized typically combine the features of a mobile phone such as the abilities to place and receive voice calls, create and receive text messages from other popular digital mobile like Personal Digital Assistance (PDA).
PDA is a small mobile device that provides computing and information storage capabilities.
Mr Ibrahim Lawal, an ICT expert said that smart phones could improve someone’s educational standard but it could also be used for other immoral things, “it all boils down to priority’’, he said.
He said that there were applications in smart phones that could be used to get locations known as Global Position System.
Ibrahim however said that it had been confirmed from research that more than 60 per cent of smart phones users use it wrongly.
He said that if smart phones were used wisely, it could bring about awareness and create a world of possibilities for the users.
“It has saved me from lot of expenses because I can now do mobile transfer through my phone instead of going to bank to pay; it saves me from standing on queue.
“It also helps youths like me to make money, for instance I have a blog which fetches me money and also I don’t need to look for job,’’ he said.
Another ICT expert, Mr Joe Okonji noted that smart phones could be used for a lot of things, saying he uses his phone to do business without being in the office.
Okonji said that the usefulness of smart phones could be not be overemphasised as it helped in interactions without the stress of moving from one place to other.
“Smart phone has helped a lot in the transaction and conversation with people without you moving from place to place.
“With your phone, you do Whatsapp where you chat; you can go to Facebook to get information and a lot of other things.
“So the phone as far as I am concerned is my office,’’ he said.
Miss Lydia Ojoma, a 300 level student of Kogi State University, Anyigba said that she uses her Smartphone to do many things, especially in chatting with her friends.
‘’ I am using my Smartphone to do many things, especially in chatting with friends and to watch videos among others.
“I also use it to do my assignments without having to go the the Cybercafé, I go online to do some researches and complete my school work,’’ she said.
On her part, Mrs Franca Adegboyega, a Civil Servant said that smart phones were good but attention given to them was making youths not to concentrate on their studies.
Adegboyega said that most youths instead of reading were busy chatting or watching movies and going to sites they were not supposed to accessed .
“Smart phones are good but the negative effect on our youths and children are too much as most of them can no longer concentrate on the studies.
“It would have been better if parents and guardians can monitor their wards to ensure that they make best use of their phones,’’ he said. (NAN)
