Gombe, July 12, 2018 (NAN) The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has urged companies to introduce incentives to enhance recovery of plastic materials for recycling.
Mr Wuave Daniel, the Gombe State Coordinator of NESREA, said this in Gombe on Thursday in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
He said recovering plastic materials for recycling was the best practice everywhere in developed countries and Nigeria must not be left behind.
Daniel expressed regret that Nigeria had become more vulnerable to environmental pollution, and that if plastic materials were recovered and re-used for various products, it would enhance a plastic-free environment in Nigeria.
“Companies should recover whatever they send out through incentives. If plastic scraps returned to companies of origin were paid for, you would not see a single plastic in Nigeria.
“It is the responsibility of companies to get back what they send out for re-use. This is the social responsibility that most companies do not fulfill but always depend on the government.
“Recovering plastic is the trend in most developed and some developing countries. It is one environment-friendly strategy that should be practiced in Nigeria. We are more vulnerable to environmental pollution as Nigerians.
“In Tunisia, the government has announced that by 2020, the use of plastic would be totally banned. This is because of its damaging effects of on the environment.
“If recovering of scraps was made lucrative, our environment would be safer and healthier for all,” he said.
He emphasised the need for companies to see the environment as part of their business plans that must be catered for and not to be left for the government alone.
He appealed to Nigerians to be environment-friendly by disposing plastic wastes properly in government approved locations. (NAN)
