Protesters in wheelchairs stage rally at UK parliament over benefit cuts – Reports

Moscow, July 19, 2017 (Sputnik/NAN)  A group called Disabled People Against Cuts staged a protest on Wednesday at the entrance to the UK Parliament over benefit cuts, local media reported.

“This is a message to [UK Prime Minister] Theresa May, while we have no justice, you will have no peace,” the protesters chanted while demanding to meet with the lawmakers, the Sky News broadcaster reported.

Police formed a line in front of the parliament’s entrance to keep the protesters away.

In the autumn reading of the budget, UK Chancellor Philip Hammond listed the main directions of economic policy for the coming years.

Hammond noted that the government, taking into account Brexit, was to increase state borrowings and cut a number of social benefits.

In June, an annual British Social Attitudes report showed that the UK citizens have become more supportive of higher taxes to increase the government’s spending on health, education and security, as this public has grown tired of the austerity policy launched following the economic crisis seven years ago.(Sputnik/NAN)
