Crisis
Stockholm, Feb. 21, 2017 (dpa/NAN) Stockholm police said on Tuesday that dozens of youth clashed with police in a mainly immigrant suburb of Stockholm after the police carried out a patrol in an underground train station.
The police spokesman Lars Bystrom said that they fired pistol shots at the rioters who attacked officers with stones in the northern suburb of Rinkeby.
More than 80 per cent of the inhabitants in Rinkeby are immigrants and unemployment is high.
Police have at times been criticised for being heavy-handed.
Bystrom said that no one was hit by the pistol shot, adding that the incident suggested the officers were “badly cornered”.
Later on, other police officers dispatched to the area were again attacked with stones.
“About 10 cars were set ablaze, and a few shops were looted, one shop owner was badly assaulted when he tried to protect his property.
“Three people, including a police officer who was hit on the arm by a stone, were reported injured.
“No arrests have been made in connection with the riots but police were analyzing security camera footage and some of the officers also had body cameras, Bystrom said.
However, the police said that order have been restored within the area.
Bystrom said that special unit was investigating the shooting adding that no immediate details about the suspect whose arrest triggered the unrest. (dpa/NAN)
