Baby
Rome, May 8, 2017 (dpa/NAN) The police on Monday said a newborn baby girl has died after being abandoned in a council estate park in the north-eastern Italian port city of Trieste, and her teenage mother is the main suspect in the case.
Police said the baby was discovered Sunday by a neighbour walking her dogs, and was taken to the Burlo Garofolo hospital in “desperate” conditions, the clinic said. She died a few hours later.
“The dogs led me [to her] and at first I thought it was a doll,” the unnamed neighbour told RAI state radio.
“The baby was wrapped in blood-soaked kitchen paper, with the placenta in a separate bag.
The Corriere della Sera newspaper reported that a 16-year-old girl confessed to police to abandoning the baby, lowering her with a rope from a first floor window, after giving birth at home.
The woman was checked into the same hospital where her baby died.
Leonardo Tamborini, a prosecutor for the local juvenile court, said the woman would undergo a psychological exam, and noted that a similar case happened in the region last year.
Tamborini added that the 16-year-old does not come from a deprived household.(dpa/NAN)
