Police arraign 18-year-old for allegedly snatching cellphone

Ikeja, Aug. 16, 2018 (NAN) The Police in Lagos on Thursday arraigned an 18-year-old unemployed man, Rilwan Aliu, in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos for allegedly snatching a cellphone valued at N24, 000.
The accused, whose address is unknown, was arraigned on a count charge of stealing, to which he pleaded not guilty.
The Prosecutor, Sgt. Godwin Awase, told the court that the accused committed the offence on July 28 at Alagbado, Lagos.
He said that the accused allegedly snatched the cell phone belonging to one Titilayo Akinyemi.
Awase told the court that the complainant reported that she was receiving a call on the roadside when the accused snatched the phone from her.
He said that the accused took to his heels, while the complainant ran after him, and with assistance from people around, he was apprehended and handed over to the police.
The prosecutor said that the stolen phone was, however, recovered from the accused when he was handed over to the police.
He said that the offence violated Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The Magistrate, Mrs F. F. George, however, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N25, 000 with one surety in like sum.
George said that the surety must be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years’ tax payments to the Lagos State Government.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 prescribes three years’ imprisonment for stealing.
The case was adjourned until Aug. 23, for mention. (NAN)
