Improvement
By Lydia Ngwakwe
Lagos, Dec. 6, 2016 (NAN) The Lagos State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Tuesday called for improvement in the use of card readers for elections.
In interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, the chapter said that card readers had caused hitches in elections, and that this should be properly addressed soon.
Chief Ola Apena, the state Deputy Chairman of PDP, said: “INEC needs to improve in this area; it should continue to explore better ways of conducting elections that will be less controversial.
“Electronic devices are not immune to manipulations and technical faults which can happen anytime.’’
He, however, commended the commission for peaceful conduct of the Ondo governorship election that produced Chief Rotimi Akeredolu as the Governor-elect.
He said:” Let us give it to INEC this time around for doing well but it could not have done very well if security agents had not maintained law and order to provide an enabling environment for a smooth conduct of the election.”
The Lagos State Chairman of African Democratic Congress (ADC), Mr Nkem Lemchi, told NAN that INEC would do better in election conduct if it could properly address malfunctioning of card readers.
“In the area of logistics and timely presence at polling centres, there has been much improvement, but this can’t be said of the performance of the card readers,” Lemchi said. (NAN)
