Damaturu, Dec. 19, 2017 (NAN) The Presidential Committee on Northeast Initiative (PCNI) and the Center for Democracy and Development (CCD) have initiated peace building and reconciliation for communities affected by the Boko Haram insurgency in Yobe.

Mr Musa Shalangwa, Senior Programme officer of PCNI, who spoke on the development Tuesday at a stakeholders meeting in Damaturu, said the forum was organised to strategise on areas of priority in peace building for the returnee communities.

Shalangwa said that the forum was organised for Civil Society and Non-Governmental Organisations engaged in humanitarian activities to consider the common problems as well as the peculiarities of the communities.

“The forum supported by MacArthur foundation, was aimed at harvesting inputs from stakeholders to develop a framework for transitional justice that is workable and acceptable by the affected people and communities.”

According to the Programme Officer, the framework was to promote peace, justice and accountability as people return to their communities.

He said the first phase of the dialogue was to engage people working in those communities on the method of approach and the most appropriate way of approaching peace building and reconciliation in the communities.

“While the second phase of the dialogue would directly involve the victims of insurgency to get their views on peace and what can be done to promote sustainable peace in the communities,” Shalangwa said.

Mr Musa Damagum, PCNI coordinator in Yobe, said the stakeholders submissions would be utilised to facilitate the establishment of durable peace and proactive measures against reoccurrence of crisis like Boko Haram insurgency.

“The solutions are being generated from the people that are directly involved with inputs based on personal experience, so as to promote conflict resolution and durable peace,” Damagun said. (NAN)
