Lagos, April 17, 2018 (NAN) Participants at a one-day Health Symposium organised by the Nigeria Athletics Master (NAM) on Tuesday advocated for more health talks on living healthy lives for sports officials.
The participants, who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at the Sports Bar of the Teslim Balogun Stadium, said the symposium was a good initiative.
NAN reports that officials from various sports participated in the symposium with theme “Health and Wellness for 50 Years and Above Sports Stakeholders”.
A Table Tennis Coach, Dele Olasumbo, said the programme was timely considering the increase in health related deaths in the country.
“I am happy to be part of the programme. Some of us are not well informed about health related issues that kill faster than HIV and terminal diseases, so we have learnt a lot today,” he said.
Isaac Ikahbomeh, a Lagos State-based athletic coach, said the programme was a commendable one that should be organised regularly.
“Participating in sporting events, either as athletes or coaches is not enough for sportsmen and sportswomen but they should be well informed on healthy living,” he said.
Nosiru Ibrahim, a coach, said having the programme regularly was vital to enable athletes check their fitness.
“Most sportsmen believe they are fit because they engage in sporting activities which is not true. The more you get yourself examined, the better for you, ” he said.
In the same vein, Adu Uruemu, an athletics coach, advised sports officials to always do regular checkup.
Uruemu commendeded the body for ensuring that sportsmen and sportswomen were educated on the importance of regular checkup.
NAN reports that all participants got free medical checkup at the event.
NAN also reports that Gloria Obajimi, a former athlete and former Director at the Nigeria Institute for Sports, is the current president of NAM. (NAN)
