Karu (Nasarawa State), June 29, 2024 (NAN) The Esu Karu of New Karu in Nasarawa State, Mr Luka Panya-Baba, has called for peaceful coexistence among communities and the nation at large.
Panya-Baba made the call at the celebration of his 20th Anniversary on the throne, on Saturday in Karu, Karu Local Government Council of Nasarawa State.
He said he envisioned a future that Karu continued to thrive and grow to an enviable height.
“I am committed to strengthen our unity and ensuring that every citizen has the opportunity to succeed, as I embark on the journey into the future.
“Let us remain united and steadfast in our resolve to support these noble ideals and endeavours together, as we continue to move forward with hope and determination.
“Together we can achieve greater heights and ensure that Karu remains a land of unity, peace and prosperity,” Panya-Baba said.
The Esu noted that from the beginning of his reign, his mission was to bring harmony to all the diverse communities.
He said, “Our efforts at conflict resolution have transformed Karu into a model of peace, setting examples for others to follow.”
He appreciated the people of Karu and chiefdom, adding that for two decades, he had achieved great things with the collaboration.
According to him, we have overcome several challenges and brought people with different backgrounds together.
He thanked the Federal and State governments for their immense contributions in seeing that Karu thrived in several ways.
The Esu also expressed gratitude to the Speaker, House of Representatives, Rep. Abbas Tajudeen, for his contribution to the welfare of Karu and for his promise to build a multipurpose hall for the palace.
Earlier, the Chairman of Karu Local Government Council, Mr James Thomas, in his welcome address, thanked the Esu for his immense contribution to the growth and peace in Karu.
He said Karu over the years, had recorded so much successes and calmness as a result of the reign of the Esu.
The FCT minister, Nyisom Wike, represented by Mr Bitrus Garki, Head, FCT Areas Council, urged the Esu to continue in his good works of supporting the FCT and Nigeria to ensure peace.
Wike, who said it was not easy to be on the throne for two decades, admonished the Esu to keep partnering with the people and government at all levels.
Similarly, the Lafia Old Student Association (LOSA) led by former Executive Director, National Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr Faisal Shuaib, congratulated the Esu.
He said that LOSA came to celebrate with one of their own, the Esu, an Alumni for his achievements and good conduct in the last 20 years.
Prof. Jerry Gana, Former Minister of Information, while praying for the Esu, added that Karu would be a land of favour, blessings, prosperity and peace.
Also, the Chairman, Nasarawa State Council of Chiefs, Justice Sidi Bage 1, who called on all traditional rulers to celebrate the Esu with him, prayed for God’s guidance and grace upon him.
However, Mr Gaza Gbefwi, representing Karu constituency on behalf of the people of Karu chiefdom, presented a white horse to Rep. Tajudeen.
On the other hand, the Karu Chairman presented a certificate to the speaker and named a road along New Nyanya, after Rep. Abbas Tajudeen.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the occasion was graced with different dance groups from the indigenous people of Karu and other settlers as well.

PCC to enforce CSR obligations compliance in Anambra

Awka, June 29, 2024 (NAN) The Public Complaints Commission (PCC) says it will start enforcement of compliance with corporate social responsibilities (CSR) obligations by private companies in Anambra.
Mrs Emelda Nwajiofor-Okoli, the PCC’s Federal Commissioner in Anambra, made the assertion at a town hall meeting in Awka on Saturday.
The meeting had the theme – “Systemic and Proactive Investigation into Compliance to Corporate Social Responsibility by Private Companies in Anambra State”.
Nwajiofor-Okoli said the commission had received many complaints from residents and communities on environmental degradation, air and noise pollution, administrative injustice and maladministration.
She noted that many of the complaints would have been avoided if the companies complied with their CSR obligations to their host communities.
“Companies should take responsibility for the social, environmental and economic impacts of their operations.
“In Anambra, we have seen the positive effects of CSR initiative in areas of education, healthcare, and environmental sustainability.
“However, we also recognise the need for more rigorous monitoring and enforcement to ensure that these initiatives are not just promises, but actions that bring about real change in host communities.
“Our role at the PCC is to oversee and ensure compliance with CSR obligations to enhance CSR practices in Anambra.
“Together, we can create an environment where businesses and communities thrive together, thereby fostering sustainable future for all,” she said.
Also speaking, Mr Abimbola Ayo-Yusuf, Chief Commissioner, PCC, said the commission was empowered by law to investigate complaints of maladministration, including those related to CSR.
Ayo-Yusuf, who was represented by Head of Legal Unit, Mr Gabriel Eze, said the law empowered the commission to hold companies accountable and ensure that their CSR activities aligned with the needs and expectations of the host communities.
In his address, Mr Charles Ekwunife, the Director of Investigation at the commission, urged the state government to establish a CSR unit to promote and monitor CSR compliance as well as drive community development.
He said the public should be aware that companies located within their communities had an obligation to give back to them.
The Anambra Commissioner for Environment, Dr Felix Odimegwu, described CSR as a form of public-private-partnership to support government in the areas infrastructure and community development as well as job creation.
In his remarks, Igwe Gerald Mbamalu of Ojoto in Idemili South Local Government Area, commended PCC for enlightening them on the need for CSR compliance by companies located in their communities.
According to him, with such awareness, community leaders can hold the companies accountable to foster good relationship that will benefit both parties.(NAN) www.nannews.ng

Lagos, June 29, 2024 (NAN) A brace by Nasiru Salihu on Saturday earned resilient El-kanemi Warriors of Maiduguri a win against Abia Warriors in the finals of the 2024 President Federation Cup.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the win was the third in the finals of the oldest cup competition in Nigeria for the Maiduguri-based team.
Salihu scored in the 32nd minute of the first half and completed his brace in the 69th minute of the action-packed finals played at the iconic Mobolaji Johnson Arena.
The final match, tagged ‘homecoming’ by the organisers, attracted important dignitaries in the sports industry.
The dignitaries at the finals included the deputy governor of Borno State, Umar Usman Kadafur, Minister of Sports Development, John Owan-Enoh and former Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Chairman, Amaju Pinnick.
The Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC) Chairman, Lekan Fatodu and Lagos State Football Association Chairman (LSFA) Liameed Gafaar, were also among other dignitaries who watched the final match.
The encounter, also tagged “Battle of the Warriors”, had the Desert Warriors in the driver’s seat, as Salihu’s brace got the better of Abia Warriors, when he coolly finished off his his brace in the 69th minute.

The El-kanemi goal poacher, who had been terrorising the Abia Warriors defense, had barely completed his brace when some pitch invaders escaped the barricade to celebrate the second goal.
They were, however, whisked away by the security personnel at the Arena.
The match winner, Salihu, in an interview after the match, said that the team did their home work before Saturday’s encounter in Lagos.
“We relied on our own strategy because, on paper Abia Warriors seems to be ahead of us, but that is not our worry at all.
“We kept our cool and worked on the strategy to beat them, not minding their status as Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) side,” he said.
NAN reports that El-kanemi Warriors won the cup in 1991 and 1992.
The Desert Warriors had defeated their northern clubside Kano Pillars 3-2 in 1991 to take home the cup for the first time.
They also defended the cup with a 2-0 win over Stationery Stores in 1992 and won with the same scoreline against Abia Warriors 32 years after in 2024. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Owerri, June 29, 2024 (NAN) The Labour Party Presidential Candidate in the 2023 General Elections, Mr Peter Obi, says investment in the coutry’s health sector remains “critical”.
Obi said this on Saturday, when he paid a solidarity visit to Holy Rosary College of Nursing, Emekuku, near Owerri.
He said that with an average life expectancy put at 55 years, Nigerians need holistic investment in its health sector, especially through the training and education of younger persons to manage the system in the future.
He described such an investment as a favour to the country and not the health workers.
The former Anambra governor, therefore, pledged his total support for the conversion of the school to a university as proposed by its management.
“With a life expectancy of 55 years, we have certainly deteriorated and must therefore invest in health with our youths as the most important targets for this investment.
“The most important person, the closest to a patient in the hospital is the nurse, hence investment in nurses and nursing students alike is critical to us,“ he said.
In a speech, the Catholic Archbishop of Owerri Diocese, Most Rev. Lucius Ugorji, thanked Obi for his visit and continued support.
Ugorji said that the campus would serve as takeoff for the proposed university.
He described Obi as “a detribalised, proper citizen and role model with character, competence, capacity and simplicity”.
The cleric further extolled Obi’s leadership qualities and urged well-meaning Nigerians to toe his path.

Asaba, June 29, 2024 (NAN) The Delta Obidient Elders Council have tasked Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori on the need to ensure that the scheduled July 13 Local Government Elections in the state were transparent, free, fair and credible.
The group gave the charge while briefing newsmen after its meeting on Saturday in Asaba.
The Council Chairman, Mr Chris Biose, said the Obidient movement did not belong to the Labour Party (LP).
According to him, the Obidient Movement constitutes a category of Nigerians from all walks of life, home and in diaspora; it has no place in the organogram of the LP.
“Obidients found Mr Peter Obi as a vehicle for the realisation of their mission of good governance for Nigeria and therefore embraced him, and LP massively supported him in the Feb. 25, 2023 Presidential election.
“This informed why some Obidients withdrew their support for LP in subsequent elections where Obi was not the candidate.
“In Delta, the leadership of LP failed to express appreciation to Obidient Youths across political party lines who engaged in self-sponsorship and political self mobilisation to work for it in the state during the presidential election.
“In this regard, Delta Obidient Elders’ Council believe that it has a duty to first of all, thank and appreciate youths of Delta and encourage them to rebuild the patriotic zeal which they displayed on Feb. 25, 2023.”
Biose assured that the elders’ council would continue to support the youths, while blaming the LP national leadership for abandoning the youths and engaging in intra party power struggle.
He regretted that the party failed to harness the political energy generated by the youths during the presidential election.
He congratulating Oborevwori on his administration’s efforts in providing quality physical infrastructure and his recent birthday anniversary celebration.
According to Obidient Elder, the litmus test of democratic governance were credible elections, while rigged election is worse than a military coup.
“In this regard, the Delta State LG polls scheduled to hold on July 13, presents the most significant test of the credibility of Gov. Oborevwori’s administration.
“We sincerely appeal to the Delta Political class to shun violence and fraud at the forthcoming LG election.
“The younger generation are watching; if political leaders continue to sow seeds of violence and fraud by their actions during elections, it will be impossible to build a sane society or a great nation from such a sordid foundation.
“That history and posterity may remember Your Excellency, Gov. Oborevwori for good; we urge you to ensure free, and fair LG elections on July 13,” he said.
He, however, lamented the present hardship in the country, adding that Obidients were irrevocably committed to the building of a new Nigeria.
The chairman, while appreciating the roles played by the media and youths, urged them not to relent in their commitment towards ensuring free, fair and credible elections in the country.
Also, Chief Solomon Akeni, Proterm Secretary of the Council, said that to ensure free, fair and credible at the local government levels, it would require the amendment of the relevant laws to grant autonomy to the third tier of government.
According to him, it is only when the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) takes charge of the LG elections, that it will be free from the clutches of the governors.
On her part, Dr Lizy Onyemah, a member of the Council, said that outside the roles played by INEC and Judiciary in an electioneering process, citizens must change their orientation and stop collecting money from politicians during elections.
Onyemah said that accepting money during elections meant that citizens had already sold their future.

Gwagwalada (FCT), June 29, 2024 (NAN) The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), has urged the Federal Government to invest more in Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and agricultural sectors to enhance the economy.
The association made the call on Saturday, at the Investiture of the 4th Chairman of Gwagwalada and District Society of ICAN and inauguration of Executive Committee in Gwagwalada, Abuja.
The new Chairman, Sosanwo Akinwunmi, Fellow of Chartered Accountants, said there was need for improvement in the economy through gainful initiatives in these areas.
Akinwunmi said that President Bola Tinubu should empower the agricultural sector, reaching out to them directly, create wallets through the Ministry of Agriculture.
He said that financial aids should be given directly to the people; provide farmers with fertilizers and other materials needed for SMEs.
“Educate them on how to run their businesses effectively and monitor the businesses properly. I think with that, we’ll be able to improve our domestic productions,” he said.
According to him, the problem of the economic crisis lies with a lot of things, which include multiple the borrowings.
“A lot of things have happened, which include the multiple borrowings by the government, and not getting the right information about the developmental projects done with the money.
“Even, telling the CBN to print money is an act of borrowing and it also has an impact on the economy.
“So, these are some of the things preventing the various economic policies put in place by the government to have a significant indelible value,” he said.
Akinwunmi pledged that under his leadership the District would impact on the communities around it.
On his part, Mr Godwin Eje, Technical Director said that the leadership team would focus more on the capacity building of Chartered Accountants.
“I’m hoping to bring in new innovations to ensure that my colleagues are up-to-date with contemporary issues.
“Before the advent of technological advancements, a lot of things were being handled differently.
“But with the advent of new technology into the accounting domain, some of our colleagues, who were previously skilled to handle certain things, but can no longer meet up to them, due to the knowledge and skill gap.
“So it is paramount that everyone gets carried along with the modern developments, to enable meet up with modern challenges in the accounting domain,” Eje said.
The 60th President, ICAN, Chief Davidson Alaribe, while congratulating the new executive, urged them to work hard to build on the efforts of the past executives to keep the flag of professionalism and excellence flying in the District.
Represented by the 1st Deputy Vice President and District Coordinator, ICAN, Hajia Queensley Seghosime, Alaribe urged them to intensify efforts on all initiatives of the Institute, especially the “Catch Them Young” programme.
He said this was to attract and retain more young talents into ICAN and the accounting profession at large.
He urged them to always bear in mind that the efforts of the past leaders of the Distinct must not go down the drain.
“I encourage you our new leaders to ensure that the district activities are at their highest tempo.”
The president also said that the country was going through various socioeconomic challenges, hence, the need for the new leadership to maximise the opportunity to showcase its problem-solving capability and in turn produce quality results.(NAN)(www.nanews.ng)

Lagos, June 29, 2024 (NAN) The Celestial Church of Christ and the Cherubim and Seraphim on Saturday staged a unity rally in Lagos.
The rally was carried out to cement their bond.
The rally began on Victoria Island, as members of the churches drove in a long motorcade across major roads and streets to inform Lagos residents of the unification.
The rally was apiced-up with a life band, songs and dances by members of the churches.
They distributed handbills and T-shirts to the public.
The handbills and T-shirts had various inscriptions showing unity of worship and purpose among the churches.
The rally had the theme: “Celebrating the Unity of the Holy Spirit: Celebrate the Comforter, Abuja 2024”.
It was organised by Rev. Mother Esther Ajayi, the Founder of Love of Christ Generation Church, Victoria Island.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the churches are also planning a unification crusade in Abuja on the July 20.
The crusade, to be held at the main bowl of the National Stadium, Abuja, is expected to be attended by Christian religious leaders including the Supreme Head of Cherubim and Seraphim Unification Worldwide, Prophet Solomon Adegboyega Alao.
Ajayi said during the rally that the Holy Spirit had brought comfort to the churches.
According to her, the presence of the Holy Spirit depicts freedom, love, unity and purposeful leadership.
“It is meant to harmonise and modify traditions and ways of doing things as faithful of one fold, to project the body in a good and acceptable manner.
“As believers, we should not encourage crack in our fold in order not to give an unsavoury impression.
“We worship one supreme God. Those things that can encourage people to clinch to God should be our signpost,” she said.
Ajayi said that disunity in the body of Christ negatively affected soul-winning.
She said that there was the need for churches to continue to render humanitarian services. (NAN)

Bere wants social media deployed to promoting development

Jos, June 29, 2024 (NAN) Mr Gyang Bere, Director of Press and Public Affairs in the Gov. Caleb Mutfwang administration in Plateau, has advised Nigerians to deploy the social media into promoting developmental issues.
Bere gave the advice on Saturday in Jos during a ‘Peace Walk’ organised by the Forum of Special Assistants to the governor on media, to commemorate the 2024 Social Media Day.
He acknowledged that the social media had become part of the society, and called on its users to put it into good use.
”Social media has become part of mankind and we cannot do away with it; it has come to stay with us, but we must use it wisely.
”We must deploy it toward promoting good governance; we must deploy it toward societal growth,” he advised.
Bere called on the media aides to use the social media toward promoting the developmental strides of the current administration in Plateau.
”This government is doing a lot in the areas of peace building, agriculture, transportation, roads construction and rehabilitation, healthcare, tourism and hospitality, among other critical sectors
”You must use the social media to propagates all of these giant strides; use it to tell the world that Plateau is peaceful and safe.
”Do not use it for propaganda; use it to communicate development, unity and the progress of Plateau,” he said.
On the proposed social media law, Bere said that it was a good idea.

Financial industry drives stock market as ASI crosses 100,000 mark

Lagos, June 29, 2024 (NAN) The Financial Services Industry led the activity chart of the Nigerian Exchange Ltd. (NGX), contributing 69.67 per cent and 60.94 per cent in volume and value respectively, to the total equity turnover in the just concluded week.

Specifically, players in the sector traded 1.847 billion shares valued at N30.455 billion in 21,899 deals.

The Conglomerates industry followed with 272.398 million shares worth N3.546 billion in 2,165 deals.

The third place was the Oil and Gas Industry, with a turnover of 112.800 million shares worth N2.259 billion in 2,748 deals.

Meanwhile, trading in the top three equities, namely FBN Holdings Plc, Transnational Corporation Plc, and Access Holdings Plc, by volume, accounted for 1.032 billion shares worth N19.799 billion in 6,083 deals.

This contributed 38.92 per cent and 39.62 per cent to the total equity turnover in volume and value respectively for the week under review.

Overall, investors traded 2.651 billion shares worth N49.976 billion in 41,610 deals this week, in contrast to 3.301 billion shares valued at N53.157 billion that exchanged hands last week in 27,536 deals.

Consequently, the NGX All-Share Index (ASI) appreciated by 0.32 per cent to settle at 100,057.49, compared to 99,743.05 recorded last week.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the All-Share Index dropped from the 100,000 mark on April 16.

The market capitalisation also appreciated by 0.32 per cent to close the week at N56.602 trillion, in contrast to N56.424 trillion posted in the previous week, resulting in a week-on-week gain of N178 billion for investors.

Similarly, all other indices finished higher except NGX Consumer Goods, NGX Industrial Goods, and NGX Growth, which depreciated by 0.56 per cent, 0.33 per cent, and 0.04 per cent respectively.

The NGX ASeM and NGX Sovereign Bond indices closed flat.

Forty-eight equities appreciated in price during the week, lower than the 53 equities in the previous week.

Thirty-four equities depreciated, higher than the 25 in the previous week, while 72 equities remained unchanged, lower than the 76 recorded in the previous week.

On the gainers’ chart, Computer Warehouse Group (CWG) led with a 44.55 per cent increase to close at N7.95 per share, while Jaiz Bank led the losers’ chart with an 11.36 per cent decrease to close at N1.95 per share. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Lagos, June 29, 2024 (NAN)The Lagos State Ferry Services (LAGFERRY) has stressed the need to harness the state’s waterway potential through tourism to boost economic growth and development.
Mr Abdoulbaq Balogun, Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, LAGFERRY, said this during the Fuji Fusion L’ori Omi event on Saturday in Lagos.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Fuji Fusion L’ori’ Omi is an initiative aimed at using music to showcase Nigeria’s water tourism.
Balogun explained that the event was a combination of entertainment, tourism and transportation.
“We are exposing the Lagos waterways to what we can do when it comes to hospitality, leisure and the blue economy,” he said.
He added that the state would remain committed to harnessing the benefits of the blue economy with waterway tourism.
“This is all about tourism in Lagos. What we are doing today is history and we are happy to be part of it. We are letting the world know what we have in Nigeria.
“ Mr Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has given us the approval that we should go ahead and explore all the potential in our waterways.
“If one third of Lagos State is covered by water, what are we doing with the water apart from water transportation which is one part of it? This is why we are actually marketing water tourism,” he said.
He added that well-known Fuji artistes both locally and internationally would showcase their talents at the event.
“We are not going into Afrobeats now, we will come back to that later but for now, we are starting this aspect of our series with our traditional genre, which is Fuji,” he said.
He listed some of the musicians as Alhaji Wasiu Alabi known as Pasuma; Ambassador Sulaiman Adio Atawewe popularly known as Mr Spirit and Alhaji Toyin Adio Ololade aka Mr Performer, among others.
Also speaking, Mr Damilola Emmanuel, the General Manager, Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), said the authority’s paramount goal was to ensure the safety of lives and property.
“LASWA is in charge of safety, ensuring that the waterways are safe for commercial transportation. Tourism, of which this Fuji Fusion falls into, our role is to provide safety for this kind of initiative.
“Our expectation is that of excitement and passion for Lagos. And we will ensure that this kind of event is happening in Lagos and people should know that Lagos state waterways are open for tourism,” he said.
The Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture Mrs Toke Benson-Awoyinka, described the event as the best way to sell tourism to Lagos residents.
“What we are doing here is to show to Lagos residents what can happen on our waterways. Many activities will go on today, we have the musicians, and people who are providing the food which is agro-economy and others.
“Many things can happen on the waterways, transportation from one place to other, even work, you can imagine an annual general meeting holding on the waterway. That is what we are selling today.
“This will not be a one-off thing, we had done a live show of a football match few months ago and we are encouraging private sector participation in this regard,” she said.
Atawewe said the Lagos Fuji Fusion was special because of the concept and the way it was packaged on the waterway.
“Lagos is trying to showcase the potential of its waterway.
“We equally use music to drive away people’s sorrow and that is what we are going to be doing in the Fuji Fusion event,” he said.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
