Zaria (Kaduna State) June 30, 2024 (NAN) The House of Representative says it will support the campaign for the privatisation and commercialisation of the federal teaching hospitals, to enhance efficiency and better healthcare delivery.
Mr Amos Magaji, Chairman House Committee on Health, and member representing Zangon Kataf/Jaba, Federal Constituency in Kaduna State, disclosed this to newsmen on Saturday evening, after the committee’s oversight visit to Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH), Zaria.
Magaji said the House of Representatives would support the initiative to strengthen service delivery, adding that the Federal Government should also take a critical look into health insurance, and increase its capitation before venturing into such a project.
He added that the health insurance should capture senior citizens age 70 years and above into the scheme because with good capitation from health insurance, people will be able to pay their bills when the hospitals were commercialised.
“At the moment there is a huge burden of out of pocket expenses on health; and so if you privatise or commercialise the National Teaching Hospital, it is similar to giving Nigerians death sentences,’’ Magaji said.
The chairman said governance was for the people, and as such, policies of the government should have a human face and tally with the aspirations of people.
On the visit to ABUTH, Magaji expressed the committee’s dissatisfaction over the number of personnel of the hospital, noting that the prestigious tertiary health facility with 1000-bed capacity, should have adequate workers to man the facility.
The chairman pledged the committee’s commitment to ensuring all grey areas in the health sector were tackled, in the overall interests of all Nigerians.
“The oversight visit to the hospital was not to find fault or witch-hunt anybody, but to assist the facility in its business of delivering quality and affordable healthcare services to Nigerians.
Earlier, Prof Hamid Umdagas, Chief Medical Director of the Hospital, told the committee that dearth of manpower and electricity supply, were the major challenges of the hospital.
Umdagas said that the hospital, which had six satellite stations, 40 clinical and non-clinical departments, was barely managing with only 2,805 personnel as at June 27.
According to him, the “Japa’’ syndrome was hitting hard on the facility’s human resources, as some of its health facility just simply disappeared, while a few had retired. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Lagos, June 30, 2024 (NAN) Former Director-General of the Labour Party (LP) Presidential Campaign Council , Dr Doyin Okupe, has faulted Federal Government’s on its suit against states over local government autonomy.
Okupe, a former Presidential spokesperson ,expressed the position in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Lagos
Okupe, former National Publicity Secretary of the defunct National Republican Convention (NRC), described the Federal Government’s legal battle against the states for autonomy as needless and unfortunate.
According to him, in a true federal system, there are only two component units- the federal and the states.
“We should run a true federal system in which there are two bodies coming together for a union: the Federal Government and sub-nationalities.
“The local governments are principally and completely issues of the state, it absolutely has nothing to do with the federal government and it (the idea of LG as a third tier)should be expunged from the constitution.
“Let the nation’s money be shared between the Federal government and the states. The Federal government asking for local government autonomy in a federal system is an aberration.
“I t is becoming so sad that we seem not to know what is right and what is wrong in the country
“Then, the state government can decide to have as many local governments as it desires for grassroots development and fund it as they like,” Okupe said.
NAN recalls that the Federal Government has instituted a legal action against the governors of the 36 states of the federation at the Supreme Court over what it calls their interference in the administration of local councils in their respective states.
The suit filed by the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, is seeking full autonomy for all local government areas in the country.
In suit, the Federal Government specifically prayed the court to issue an order, prohibiting state governors from embarking on unilateral, arbitrary and unlawful dissolution of democratically elected local government leaders.
The suit is also asking for an order permitting the funds standing in the credits of local governments to be directly channelled to them from the federation account in line with the provisions of the constitution as against the alleged unlawful joint accounts created by governors.
FG also prayed the Supreme Court for an order stopping governors from further constituting caretaker committees to run the affairs of local governments as against the constitutionally recognized and guaranteed democratic system.
It equally applied for an order of injunction restraining the governors, their agents and privies from receiving, spending or tampering with funds released from the federation account for the benefits of local governments when no democratically elected local government system is put in place in the states. Lagos, June 30, 2024 (NAN) Former Director-General of the Labour Party (LP) Presidential Campaign Council , Dr Doyin Okupe, says the proposed single-tenure rotational presidency is a great idea for a developing country like Nigeria.

Okupe, a former presidential spokesman,who made the remark in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Lagos, however,said it should not be approached hastily.
NAN reports that a bill seeking a single term of six years for the President and state governors was brought up recently by 35 members of the House of Representatives.
The bill also canvasses the rotation of the presidency among the six geo-political zones of the country.

Mexico is one of the few countries in the worl operating six-year single tenure presidency .
Reacting, Okupe,a former National Publicity Secretary of the defunct National Republican Convention (NRC) said that so many things were wrong with the 1999 Constitution despite the amendments it had undergone.
“I don’t think we should do this kind of reform(constitutional amendment) in a haphazard manner . There is so much that is wrong with the constitution we are operating.
“There is so much confusion and contradiction in the 1999 Constitution as prescribed and handed over to us by the military.
“I would rather have us to have a holistic approach to this reform or amendment.
“The six year single tenure for the President and governors is okay in a developing nation like this and I have no objection to it.
“Yes, it is good we can have six years single tenure rotational presidency. However,the rotational part should be clearly stated in the constitution among the six zones,” Okupe said.
He said that the National Assembly should not just review the tenure alone, but must go ahead and do so many other reforms, especially in the electoral system.
According to him , there is also confusion about whether Nigeria is running a federal system or unitary system which any reform must address.
He added that if the nation must have the reform, the presidential system of government must be jettisoned for parliamentary system “where we have a Prime Minister that would be elected by his colleagues from the parliament.”
“The Prime Minister will run the country under the supervision of the elected president .The role of the president will be limited and be very clear.
“And if the people are not satisfied with the prime minister, they can go to the parliament to remove him and put some else.
“This is a country of over 200million, a lot of destinies are involved, there is no need for us to patching and patching it. If the constitution is not okay let us attend to it properly.”
On the 2014 National Conference, Okupe said that the recommendations of the confab,organised by former President Goodluck Jonathan,would have delivered an acceptable constitution,if implemented.
“Everybody agreed and everybody consented. Why don’t we bring that up to have something that is reasonable.
“We just add other issues like this single term rotational presidency.
“And if we are going to do it, the time for it is now. We need to get things corrected once and for all.
“We are where we are because new are just satisfied managing the same constitution that has not helped us,” Okupe said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Abuja, June 30, 2024 (NAN) The African Union (AU), says no fewer than 65.4 million children in 51 countries now benefit from School Feeding in Africa, with Nigeria standing out in implementation of the programme.
Ms Kefilwe Moalosi, Project Manager for Nutrition and Food Safety, Africa Union Development Agency-New partnership for African development (AUDA-NEPAD), said this in a statement on Sunday, in Abuja.
Moalosi, who spoke during a school feeding stakeholders’ strategic meeting, themed: “Encouraging State Driven Implementation and Best Practices for School Feeding Towards Local Agricultural Value Chain, Community Engagement and Economic Development”, called on other African countries to emulate Nigeria.
She specifically called on Africa’s leadership to follow Nigeria’s example in transitioning the school feeding programme from a Federal Government-led initiative to states governments’ project.
“Recent disruptions to African economies add traction to the movement and the need to think local, especially in a continent where farming remains a top source of income and jobs, particularly for women.
“By working together, we can leverage on our collective expertise and resources to develop comprehensive programmes that address the multifaceted needs of our children,” she said.
The project manager e explained that from nutrition and health, to education and economic empowerment, funding for school meal programmes coming directly from governments could vary widely.
She noted that though investing in home-grown school feeding programmes was not without its challenges; its rewards far outweighed the costs.
Moalosi reaffirmed the AU’s commitment to the well-being of African children, and the prosperity of its communities, saying in unity, a brighter future for generations to come could be built.
“We will only reach our goal to zero hunger if we all walk together, we have to run together towards our goal,” she stressed.
She thanked the Nigerian Government for collaborating with AUDA-NEPAD, to domesticate the continental school feeding guidelines through the engagement of school feeding implementers, especially at the community level, to contribute to the food and nutrition security outcomes.
Moalosi expressed optimism that state driven implementation and best practices for school feeding, could significantly enhance investments and promote local agricultural value chain.
She noted that it would also promote community engagement and economic development in school feeding programmes in Nigeria.
“School feeding programmes play a crucial role in addressing malnutrition, improving children’s health and educational outcomes.
“Promoting local agriculture and Investing in home-grown school feeding programmes is not merely expenditure; it is an investment in our collective future.
“By leveraging on the resources and capabilities of the state actors, we have the opportunity to transform the lives of millions of children across our nations.
“However, by providing daily meals sourced from local farmers and producers, we ensure that our children receive the essential nutrients they need to thrive both in schools and beyond,” Moalosi said.
According to her, data compiled by the AU in 2019, indicates that the figure drawn from 51 countries represents a massive increase from 38.4 million in 2013.
She said the development should not be seen as surprising since African leaders, through the Assembly of Heads of States and Government in 2016, acknowledged the contribution of School Feeding to human resources.
She said they had also recognised capital development in Africa, and endorsed the Home- Grown School Feeding to be commemorated annually on March 1.
Moalosi added that the statistics also indicated that only 27 per cent of children in sub-Saharan Africa accessed a school meal, which was affecting learning outcomes.
She, however, expressed delight that the programme was at least benefitting more than 65 million children in 51 African countries, representing 84 per cent funded by domestic budgets. (NAN)

Abuja, June 30, 2024(NAN) The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) is to inaugurate three new model rehabilitation centre before the end of the year 2024.
The Director of Media and Advocacy of the NDLEA, Mr Femi Babafemi said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Abuja.
Babafemi said that the agency was no longer scratching the surface adding that indeed the agency was getting to the root of the problems associated with drug abuse and illicit trafficking.
He said that there was hardly no community in Nigeria that do not have problem of substance abuse saying awareness and advocacy helped in curbing to the barest minimum.
According to him, this is why you have these whole level of awareness all over the country.
“That’s why the agency brought on board the War Aganist Drug Abuse (WADA) initiatives to mobilise everybody, be you, families, Faith based Organisations, community, all strata of the society to get involved in this whole thing.
“We are having three new model rehabilitation center coming up this year which will be commissioned very soon.
“This shows you that the leadership of this country is well informed about the problems of drugs in Nigeria and he is giving great support to NDLEA .
“We are glad about that and the partnership the agency is having with other organisations and institutions.
“Drug abuse is a global challenge. We don’t have time to waste and that’s why we are running faster and driving hard to ensure that we respond to the global challenge, “he said.
Speaking on the renewed initiative of the agency, Babafemi said that the whole essence was to drive awareness towards drug testing.
NAN reports that President Bola Tinubu had launched “Save Our Families Campaign” initiative to strengthen the fight against drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking on June 26.
Babafemi said that there was need for parents to also take ownership of their children upbringing.
He said that the agency had now provided thousands of test kits that could be used in the home and offices among others.
According to him, you don’t have to get into a facility before you used this test kits, just like people seat in their home and test for diabetes , pregnancy and others .
“Don’t forget that the family is the smallest unit of the society and more often than not, that’s where some of these problems start from.
“So if we are trying to get to the bottom of it and to solve the situation, we also have to go back to the family level to get, moblise parent, to get them to start parenting , to take ownership of the upbringing of their children.
“Parent need to be intentional in parenting. We have definitely gone beyond that and apart from that, you have also seen that NDLEA keeps coming up everyday and every time with new strategy.
“We simplify the process so that parents can now get their homes to check whether their kids are into substance abuse. This is for early detection.
“When you discover it early, you can then quickly seek help because at the early stages of substance abuse, it’s easier to tackle to treat than when it becomes a state of addiction, then it becomes very complex and complicated.

Ile-Ife (Osun), June 30,2024(NAN) The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Ojaja 11, has commended the old students of St John’s Grammar School Old Boys Association (SJOBA), Ile-Ife, for upgrading road in the school with 5,965 interlocking blocks worth N20 million.
Ooni gave the commendation during the St. John’s Grammar School 40th Anniversary of 1979/1984 Set at the School Hall on Saturday in Ile-Ife.
The road project which is 150 metres length and six metres wide with dual bell mouth at both ends was initiated by 1979/1984 Set.
Oba Ogunwusi said that the history would not forget the Set’s contribution towards the growth and development of the school, adding that it has provided good example for the coming generation.
The traditional ruler who noted that government alone cannot do it, called for the support of stakeholders towards the growth of the educational sector.
Also, the Provost of the Nigerian Institute of Journalism, Mr Gbenga Adefaye, lauded the old students, despite the economic downturn in the country, for contributing towards the development of their school.
Adefaye described the 1979/1984 Set as pacesetter, saying that their good works endear other sets to emulate them.
Similarly, the 1979/1984 Set President, Engr. Adewuyi Adetogun, commended members’ selfless contributions towards the development of the school.

Abuja, June 30, 2024(NAN) No fewer than 12 cultural dance groups on Saturday showcased their various cultural diversity and creativity to honour Dr Luka Baba, Etsu Karu at his 20th anniversary in New Karu, Nasarawa State.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the groups comprised Gbagyi, Eggon, Mada, Koro, Ebira, Tiv, Ngas, Berom, Chawai, Igbo, Idoma and Efik .

The Eggon Anzalu dance group, composed of men, presented fascinating dance steps, electrifying the atmosphere with their drums and trumpets.
Mr Yakubu Garba, leader of the group, said honouring the leadership of Etsu Karu for two decades gives them joy because he is a man of the people.

Garba said that his leadership quality should be emulated by other leaders, saying that he carries every ethnic group in his domain along without discrimination.

“This dance group is a unifying force that brings us together and we will keep trying to foster our unity through it,” he said .

Also speaking, Chief Adoji Aliku, Aren Eggon Karu, said the Eggon ‘Traditional Council Karu’, felicitated the Etsu Karu on the occasion of his 20th anniversary on the throne.

Aliku said that the Etsu Karu is one of the outstanding first class traditional rulers in the state because of his leadership style.

“He has contributed to the growth and development of Karu. He organises free medical outreaches for his people, and always organised peace meetings in collaboration with all security agencies.

” This is the main reason why Karu is relatively peaceful as it was described as a mini Nigeria. It hosts almost all the whole tribes in the Country, ” he said.

The traditional ruler prayed for long life and prosperity for him, adding that God should give him more wisdom to discharge his duties effectively.

Earlier, Baba commended the solidarity and goodwill messages showered on him, saying the memories would forever remain with him.

He said that the event was a milestone in the history of tradition, which would provide the opportunity to reflect on the past, celebrate the present and look forward to what the future has in stock.

” Celebrating the 20 glorious years I have been on the throne of our ancestors was a great achievement for us in Karu.

” These two decades has been a great honour and privilege serving Karu people, together we have achieved great things and overcome several challenges.

” Our journey has been guided by commitment, fostering peace and unity among our people.

” Dialogues and understanding have made it possible for us to bring together people of different backgrounds, ethnicity and belief as one united family,” he said.

He said that the special grace of God had made the people of Karu to be united, stronger and more prosperous.

“Since my reign as the leader of Karu, we have decided to bring peace and harmony to our diverse communities.

” Our efforts to resolve conflicts have transformed Karu to a peaceful community worthy of emulation by other communities,” he added.

Abuja, June 30, 2024 (NAN) Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has expressed concern over growing threat to water safety in the country, which triggers outbreak of water-borne diseases, including cholera.
Its Director-General, Dr Jide Idris, expressed worry in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Abuja, stressing that improper refuse disposal and open defecation practices are endangering the quality of water sources used for drinking and for personal use.
The centre announced an outbreak of cholera, a severe diarrheal illness caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae, which has spread to more than 30 states of the federation.
The centre also reports that as of June 24, 2024, there were 1,528 suspected cholera cases, 65 confirmed cases and 53 deaths across 107 local government areas in 31 states, reflecting a case fatality rate of 3.5 per cent since the beginning of the year.
The most affected states include Bayelsa, Zamfara, Abia, Cross River, Bauchi, Delta, Katsina, Imo, Nasarawa and Lagos.
The NCDC boss, therefore, urged Nigerians to adopt safe sanitation practices and called on state governments to enforce stricter waste management regulations, saying “unsafe practices lead to contamination of water bodies.
“We must take responsibility to ensure the safety of our water. Proper waste disposal and elimination of open defecation are crucial in this direction.
“There is also the need for public education and awareness about the importance of hygiene and proper sanitation practices amid rising concerns about the spread of diseases such as cholera and typhoid, which thrive in unsanitary conditions.”
He explained that as the rainy season sets in, the risk of water contamination may be heightened, hence the need for communities to take immediate action.
“We need collective efforts to protect our water sources and ensure the health and well-being of all Nigerians,” he said.
He listed measures taken to curtail the disease to include efforts made by the multi-sectoral National Cholera Technical Working Group, led by NCDC, comprising federal ministries of environment and water resources, and National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA).
He said “World Health Organisation (WHO), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and other partners have been providing support to affected states.
“The support includes risk communication, active case search, laboratory diagnosis, case management, provision of response commodities, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) interventions, and dissemination of cholera awareness jingles in both English and local languages.
“President Bola Tinubu had also directed the Federal Executive Council (FEC) to establish a committee to oversee the cholera emergency operation centre operated by the NCDC.
“This committee will include members from the ministries of health, finance, water resources, environment, youth, aviation and education.
“The initiative aims to reduce open defecation with support from state governments.”
Idris said the NCDC activated the emergency operation centre to address the outbreak.
He, however, stressed the urgent need for improved sanitation practices and access to clean water to combat the outbreak.
Meanwhile, Lagos State accounts for the highest number of the cholera deaths with 29, followed by Rivers with eight, Abia and Delta with four each, Katsina with three, Bayelsa with two, while Kano, Nasarawa and Cross River recorded one each.
The alarming trend highlights the urgent need for coordinated response to prevent further escalation of the crisis, especially in affected states.(NAN) www.nannews.ng).

Abuja, June 30, 2024 (NAN) A civil society group, Security, Economic and Development Initiative (SEDI), has decried the spate of rail tracks vandalism across the country, describing it as wicked and barbaric.
The Public Secretary of SEDI, Mr Abiodun Daniels, said this in a statement on Sunday in Abuja.
Daniels stated that it was inconceivable that some unscrupulous persons would use their hands to destroy what they were supposed to protect.
According to him, it is wicked, evil and act of murder to remove rail tracks and expose train passengers to danger, which in some instances can lead to fatalities.
“We are therefore saying that anyone found guilty of rail tracks vandalism should face life imprisonment to serve as deterrent to intending vandals.
“We use this opportunity to commend troops of the Armed Forces of Nigeria under the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Chris Musa for going after the vandals.
“The vandals, wherever they are, must be apprehended, tried and face the music for their wicked and callous behaviour,” he said.
He said troops of 1 Division, Nigerian Army in Kaduna recently apprehended 47 suspected rail track vandals while on routine patrol along Kakau Daji-Anguwan Ayaba in Chikun Local Government Area of the state.
He added that the suspects had loaded two trucks with the vandalised rail tracks before their arrest.
He recalled that operatives of the Nigerian Navy School of Armament Technology in Kachia, Kaduna State, also recently, intercepted three trailers loaded with vandalised railway track materials, discreetly concealed in animal feed.

Abuja, June 30, 2024 (NAN) Mr Benneth Igweh, the Commissioner of Police (CP) in charge of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has ordered a clampdown on vehicles plying roads in the territory without number plates.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the FCT, SP Josephine Adeh, made this known in a statement on Sunday in Abuja.
Adeh stated that the Police Command in the FCT had observed with serious concern, the manner in which motorists drive around the territory with single or no number plates.
She said it had also been observed that car dealers drive such vehicles beyond the stipulated time of between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. in Section 25 (5) of the FCT Road Transport Regulation Act, 2005.
It is no news that several recorded cases of armed robbery, popularly known as “one chance” are mostly associated with vehicles with single or no number plates.
According to her, the unlawful act has pricked the attention of the populace, who question the effectiveness of the police in addressing the menace.
“Consequent upon this, the CP has given a marching order that vehicles plying the roads with a single or no number plate should be impounded, with the driver arrested and prosecuted.
“This is to also warn car dealers against parking their vehicles in an unauthorised parking lot and driving beyond the stipulated time.
“Defaulters will henceforth be made to face the full wrath of the law.”
Adeh reiterated the commitment of the command to ensure the safety of residents of FCT, adding that “no motorist or car dealer would be allowed to come in conflict with the substantive laws in the territory.”
