Kwara Govt explains extension of tenure of Offa LG Chairman
    NAN-H-43
    Extension
Ilorin, Sept. 28, 2016 (NAN) The Kwara Government on Wednesday said it extended the tenure of chairman of Offa Local Government to ensure uniform tenure for all council chairmen in the state.

Alhaji Mahmud Ajeigbe, the State Commissioner for Information and Communications, said this while speaking with newsmen in Ilorin.

According to him, the state government did not act outside the provisions of the law because the law permits the extension of council chairmen tenure for six months in two installments.

“The state government acted within the provision of the law. The State House of Assembly also approved this request.

“People could only raise objection if government has gone against the law”.

He, however, said that the state would be guided by the law in taking decisions on the conduct of local government election at the expiration of the tenure of the current chairmen in November.

Ajeigbe said that the state would take into consideration the resources at its disposal and act within the law guiding local government administration in the state.

Meanwhile, the state has shifted the mock examination for Senior School Students III from second term to first term.

The commissioner said that the development was to enhance and improve quality of education in the state.

“Mock examination is expected to be a test to their final examinations.
“When they are tested during the first term, it would avail government an opportunity to know their performance.

“This will enable government to take necessary steps before their final examinations in May the following year; it will give us an opportunity of five to six months”.

The commissioner said that the idea was aimed at reviewing education programme in the state.

Ajeigbe, while speaking on the closure of 25 schools in the state, said the affected schools were in bad shape and were not operating within the law. (NAN)

  • Edo poll: Oshiomhole happy with impressive voters’ turnout

    NAN-H-9

    Commendation

    By George Edomwonyi

Iyamho (Edo), Sept. 28, 2016 (NAN) Gov. Adams Oshiomhole of Edo has commended the electorate in the state for turning out in large numbers to cast their votes in Wednesday’s governorship election in the state.

Oshiomhole made the commendation shortly after casting his vote at Unit 2, Ward 10, in his Iyamho community in Estako West Local Government Area of the state at about 11 a.m.

“I am very impressed with the turnout of voters in these polling units. What is happening in these three polling units is a perfect example of what election should be,” he said.

He commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for adopting simultaneous accreditation and voting, adding that it was an improvement on the part of the commission’s performance.

“I have always wondered why INEC wanted people to get accredited first and vote hours later.

“The poor people who are used to hardship had to carry the burden of our democracy by waiting the whole day.

“I believe INEC has made a sensible improvement in the election process.  This is a civilised way of doing election and a victory for the middlemen who cannot wait on the line.

“God wants us to enjoy democracy and I believe we the politicians should allow the people to have that.

“My joy is that people are ready to celebrate democracy by the way they have queued for the election,” the governor said.

He, however, expressed sadness over the alleged snatching of card readers from electoral officers in some parts of Edo Central Senatorial District by some thugs who reportedly shot indiscriminately.

“I don’t know how that happened because there ought to have been enough security in the polling units.

“At this point, it will be too difficult for one to draw a conclusion because this happened in only one unit of the over 2,000 polling units in the state,” he said. (NAN)

The victim’s death was said to have arose spontaneous reactions from the people, leading to the burning of Popoola’s houses in the community.

    NAN-H-44
    Attack
    By Modupe Seriboh
Ibadan, Sept. 28, 2016 (NAN) The Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU), University of Ibadan chapter, has condemned the attacks by some hoodlums on members of staff of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, on Tuesday.

In a statement by its Zonal Coordinator, Dr Ade Adejumo, which was made available to newsmen in Ibadan, ASUU also demanded that the Police bring the perpetrators of the crime to book.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that suspected thugs on Tuesday evening invaded the institution and beat up its members of staff.

ASUU also called on members to resist any attempt by politicians to play ethnic politics with the lives of people who were being denied their entitlements and rights.

“We strongly appeal to our members to resist the temptations to be drawn into whatever political games politicians are playing to deliberately distract us from the focus of the current struggle.

“Let us remain calm and watchful, even in the face of extreme provocation. This is just a passing phase in the struggle and we shall survive it,” it stated.

The statement warned parents to keep their children and wards at home pending the duration of the strike embarked upon by its members in the institution.

It explained that the current crisis was a result of under-funding of the institution by the owner state governments of Osun and Oyo.

“Our struggle therefore is targeted at nudging the states back to the fulfillment of their obligations to the university.

“We hereby reiterate our position on the state of the crisis currently ravaging our dear institution, LAUTECH. The university is a public institution founded and financed with tax payers money.

  • Expert urges livestock farmers to have areas of specialisation

    NAN-AE-8
    Livestock
    By Chidinma Ewunonu-Aluko
Ibadan, Sept. 28, 2016 (NAN) Prof. James Adediran, the Executive Director, Institute of Agricultural Research and Training (IAR&T), Ibadan, on Wednesday, urged livestock farmers to have areas of specialisation to make more profit.

Adediran, represented by the institute’s Deputy Director, Dr Ayodele Adegbite, spoke at the workshop organised by IAR&T, on ‘turning livestock farming into sustainable job creation and profitable business in a recessed economy.’

He noted that livestock comprised many areas such as poultry, piggery, snail, grass cutter production, etc, stressing the need for the farmers to specialize in a particular area.

“Join associations, cooperatives to make more profit, make farming a business, not a project; agriculture can create jobs, engage youths to be functional and self reliant,” Adediran said.

Speaking on the topic, a pig scientist at IAR&T, Dr Akinyemi Adesehinwa urged farmers to invest in the opportunities provided by livestock, adding that it was profitable and loaded.

“Poultry alone has opportunities. We have production of eggs, day-old chicks, broiler meat, etc; piggery too has a lot of value chains likewise others.

“We need to invest in livestock so that we will be employers of labour rather than employees.

“Only old people still engage in agriculture, where are the young ones? We should not be blaming everything on the government; we should play our own roles too.

“We can help to solve our problems by engaging in agriculture- it is able to turn our lives around positively as well as that of the country at large,” Adesehinwa said.

Earlier, the IAR&T Head of Livestock Programme, Dr Adeboye Omole, said the essence of the training was to improve production of livestock in the south-west and the country at large.

Omole urged the farmers to make best use of the opportunity given by the training to improve on their production and thanked the management of the institute for their support.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the highlights of the events include presentation of awards to some individuals for promoting agriculture and livestock in Nigeria. (NAN)

  • Check your blood pressure regularly to avoid stress-related ailments– Foundation

    NAN-HG-7
    Foundation
    By Olasunkanmi Onifade
Abuja, Sept. 28, 2016 (NAN) Dr Jacob Nwachukwu, the President, Blood Pressure Control Foundation, Nigeria, an NGO, on Wednesday advised Nigerians to cultivate habit of checking their blood pressure regularly to avoid stress-related ailments.

Nwachukwu gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja, ahead of the World Heart Day scheduled for Thursday.

NAN reports that World Heart Day is part of an international campaign to spread the awareness about heart diseases and stroke prevention.

Nwachukwu said that the advice became necessary because blood pressure showed no signs or symptoms.

He said that stress-related ailments such as stroke, diabetes and hypertension showed minor signs which were usually ignored until they became severe.

Nwachukwu said, “Some of these ailments can lead to sudden death, if not detected early and properly managed by medical experts.

“They can occur almost immediately; someone who is apparently fit may be at risk; that is why routine checkup is of utmost importance.’’

The NGO chief described hypertension as one of the most common stress-related ailments that affect many people silently.

According to him, hypertension is a chronic medical condition in which the blood pressure in the arteries becomes elevated.

“Blood pressure measurement is consistently normal if it is 120/80, but when it repeatedly becomes 150/90, that is when there is hypertension.

“When somebody is hypertensive, there are certain food modifications that one has to make to ensure that the pressure is not aggravated.

“Anybody diagnosed with hypertension should avoid fatty foods, sugary drinks and change some lifestyles.

“The person should take more of fish, chicken with the skin removed, more fruits and vegetables, avoid alcohol intake and sugary foods completely,’’ he advised.

Nwachukwu said that the lifestyle of an individual could affect the way the body reacted to issues.

He stressed the need for Nigerians to avoid consuming excessive salt and some foods with artificial seasonings, saying that they could trigger ailments.

The doctor said salt reduction was a preventive and treatment measure to hypertension.

He added that taking medication and avoiding junk foods would go a long way in eradicating chronic conditions.

Nwachukwu also advised Nigerians to cultivate the habit of regular exercise and create time for relaxation as a way of reducing stress-related ailments.

NAN reports that aim of the Day is to improve health globally by encouraging people to make lifestyle changes and promoting education internationally about ways to be good to one’s heart.

Also, the need for regular check on blood pressure is becoming increasingly relevant as reports of obesity, poor diet and physical inactivity in children and young people become common. (NAN)

  • Students’ performance in SSCE over 5 year in North West disappointing — Stakeholders

    NAN-H-38

    Students

Abuja, Sept. 28, 2016 (NAN) Stakeholders in the education sector in the Northwest have described the performance of students in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) over the last five years as disappointing.

The stakeholders in interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria [NAN], blamed the situation on poor funding, students’ poor attitude to learning and the lack of motivation for teachers.

In Kaduna State, the performance rate hovered between 12.8 per cent and 17.5 per cent over the period.

Cumulatively, 158,035 students sat for WASSCE from 2011 to 2015, and they recorded 12.8 per cent pass in five subjects and above, including mathematics  and English Language.
The record, obtained from Kaduna State Educational Resource Centre, shows that out of 135,957 results  released, 19,137 passed with the required number of credits for admission to tertiary institutions during the period.

The record shows that in 2011, 2,877 students, representing 10.7 per cent, passed out of 26,734 students whose results were released.

The record shows that 35,214 students sat for the examination during the year.

“Thirty-three thousand, one hundred and five students sat for the examination in 2012 and the results of 28,496 students were released out of which 4,957 passed, representing 14.9 per cent.

“Also, in 2013, 36,291 students sat for the examination and 33,614 results were released but only 3,274 passed, representing nine per cent.

“In 2014, 25,653 students sat for the examination; 21,315 results were released out of which 3,156, representing 12.3 per cent passed.

“Meanwhile 27,772 students sat for the examination in 2015 and 25,798 results were released, out of which 4,873 passed, representing 17.5 per cent,” the record indicates.

Mr Ishaya Tabat, a lecturer with Kaduna State College of Education, Gidan Waya, blamed the development on the dearth of quality teachers and poor funding of the education sector.

Tabat also said that poor supervision and the absence of teacher’ training also added to the challenge of the sector.

“Because of the lack of sufficient funding in the education sector, educational institutions find it difficult to ensure continuous training of teachers to improve their quality.

“Also, supervision that requires manpower and other logistics to ensure that teachers carry out their tasks effectively and as when due had been neglected due to funding problems,” he added.

He called on government at all levels to properly fund the education sector to give room for teachers’ training and improvement in quality service delivery.

A teacher with Government Secondary School Manchok, Mrs Kubai Bature, also identified lack of instructional materials in schools and students’ attitude to learning as factors in the poor performance.

“Most schools do not have teaching aids that would make teaching very effective, interesting and make learning easy for the students.

“For the sake of the students, teachers should improvise because teaching aids remain crucial tools for  impacting knowledge.

“Not only that, attitude of the students towards learning is another problem. Most of the students spend more time on social media than they spend reading their books. They just don’t read,” she said.

She called on government to equip public schools to make learning easy and interesting.

In Kebbi, the rate of failure was also very high with less than five per cent of candidates getting the required number of credits to proceed to higher institutions.

Alhaji Magawata Aleiro, the Commissioner for Education, said, in 2012, a total of 22,151 students registered for WASSCE but only 1, 650, representing 7.44 per cent had five credits, including English Language and mathematics.

Also, in 2013, out of 22, 084 candidates who sat for the examination, only 812, representing 3.7 per cent, passed with five credits.

There was no detail of the candidates for 2014 but NAN learnt that 23,441 students sat for the examination in the state during the year.

The trend of failure did not change significantly in 2015, as only 2, 529 students were successful out of 24, 696 who sat for the examination.

The result for 2016 was not available as West African Examination Council (WAECF), organisers of the examination, had refused to release the result for students from the state because of the failure of the state government to settle the N180 million it was owing.

Following the development, some 27,670 students who  sat for the examination are still awaiting their results.

In Kano State, the Ministry for Education also decried the woeful performance of students in the examination.

Records made available to NAN by Kano State Educational Resource Department indicated that 50,075 students wrote the exam in 2012 but 9,944 students met the minimum university entry requirement.

Alhaji Ado Dahiru, the Coordinator of examinations in the ministry, said the figure represented 19.38 per cent of the total number of candidates.

He said in 2013, out of the 50,640 students who sat for the examination, 18,159, representing 35.86 per cent had five credits and above.
Dahiru said that in 2014, there was a minor upward shift as 37.95 per cent of the students passed.

NAN reports that 48,567 students sat for the examination during the year under review and 15,791, had credits in five subjects and above, including mathematics and English Language.
He added that in 2015, a total of 13, 069 out of the 45,347 students obtained the required number of credits.

Dahiru said the upward trend in the success of students  was an indication that the state was addressing the problems of the education sector.
A teacher at Kano Capital School, Malam Musa Bello said politics, harsh economic conditions as well as  unskilled teachers, overcrowded classrooms and lukewarm attitude of students to learning contributed to the poor records.

Other stakeholders attributed the situation to poor funding, which had resulted in irregular supervision of teachers, absence of instructional materials and other basic facilities for teaching and learning.
Malam Harisu Ahmed, the Public Relations Officer of the Ministry for Education, said the lack of motivation had affected the quality of teachers.

Meanwhile in Katsina State, the government has reviewed its free education policy and insists that only students who pass the mock SSCE will be funded by the government.

Gov. Aminu Masari said while inspecting some schools in Katsina that the government would pay examination fees of only those with the capacity to pass.
“My administration has no plan to discontinue the payment of examination fees for students sitting for WAEC, NECO and NABTEB.

“Being an APC governor, education, agriculture, water supply and healthcare are our key priorities.

“The administration will pull out all the stops to ensure that by December 2016, at least 40 per cent of primary and secondary schools as well as primary and secondary health institutions in the state are comprehensively rehabilitated,’’ he said.
He said that the decision was part of the administration’s determination to make the state regain its position as a  centre of learning, excellence and peace.
Masari said that in 2014, the state government paid two  billion naira to WAEC and NECO for 22,000 students but only 20 per cent got five credits and above.
Similarly, in 2015, the government paid N1.5 billion to the examination bodies for 17, 000 students but only 25 per cent got five credits and above.
Masari, however, said that students of private secondary schools had been recording 45 per cent pass in the past three years.

In Zamfara, some residents said students’ performance, especially in public schools, was poor.

A teacher, Abduganiu Nasir, said private schools had  more competent teachers than in public schools, where most teachers were not serious with their job.

Musa Abdullahi also a teacher, said government must give priority to education to address the problem. imilarly, Maryam Yusuf, a parent, said the state government had not been very serious with the issue of education.

Maryam said the government had not kept to its commitment to pay the SSCE fees for students in  schools, as it promised.

NAN recalls that the state House of Assembly recently summoned officials of the state ministries of Education and that of Science and Technology over poor results recorded in SSCE. (NAN)
