Dutse, Oct. 10, 2016 (NAN) Alhaji Ibrahim Garba, the Jigawa Commissioner for Water Resources, on Monday urged the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) to ensure sustainable collation of  data on Hadejia, Jama’are, Komadugu, and Yobe River Basin.

Garba made the remark at the sensitisation workshop on 2016 Flood Prediction, Prevention and Mitigation in Hydrological Areas in Dutse.

The commissioner said that 15 million people are getting livelihood directly or indirectly on the river basin.

He urge NIHSA to increase the level of cooperation and synergy to Jigawa government, in ensuring sustainable data collection, collation and dissemination between all stakeholders on this basin and the country.

According to him, the river basin covers land area of about 148,00km, with over 30 million people, out of which 15 million people are getting their livelihood directly or indirectly.

“The river transverse through six states of Plateau, Kano, Bauchi at the upstream while Jigawa, Yobe and Maiduguri at downstream,” he said.

Garba said that the basin is considered to be of strategic national and international importance to Nigeria.

“It is the source of internationally-shared water, whose management in Nigeria has an important bearing on diplomacy in four countries- Niger, Chad, Cameroon and Central African Republic,” he said.

He said the Jigawa government was collaborating with the authorities of Hadejia-Jama’are River Basin, to enhance free flow of water at the downstream.

“The Jigawa government is making efforts, in collaboration with Hadejia Jama’are River Basin Authority, to carry out mechanical clearance of typha-grass from part of Guri town, leading to Jigawa-Yobe axis.’’

According to Garba, the Jigawa government is supporting self-help groups with necessary working materials in flood-prone local government areas.

The commissioner identified the flood-prone areas as Ringim, Taura, Jahun, Miga, Kafinhausa, Kirikasamma and Birniwa.(NAN)

    ByIsaac Aregbesola
Abuja, Oct. 10, 2016 (NAN) Germany is putting together 47.7 million Euros development package for Nigeria to address the challenge posed by illegal migrants and enable them stay in their country.

German Foreign Affairs Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier made the statement on Monday in Abuja while fielding questions from newsmen at the end of a meeting of Nigeria-German Bi-National Commission.

He said that Nigeria and Germany had signed an understanding at the commission not to allow illegal migrants from Nigeria stay in Germany or Europe.

“There is an understanding in Nigeria and we have just signed a Memorandum of Understanding in our meeting of the BNC that we have to insist that illegal migrants from Nigeria will not be allowed to stay in Germany.

“ That they have to return and that we have to find the legal basis for the return of illegal migrants from Germany, Europe to Nigeria,’’ he said.

He said that Germany had already offered two million Euros for humanitarian assistance to Nigeria to assist the country tackle the challenges posed by illegal migrants.

The minister said that Nigeria and Germany had a common issue on the illegal migrants, adding that was the reason Germany was offering the assistance.

He said that the number of illegal migrants from Nigeria which was about two per cent in the last two years had increased recently.

“In the last few months, the number of illegal migrants from Nigeria is increasing.

“Poverty and lack of security may be dominant reasons; young people are leaving their homes and embarking on a risky and dangerous journey to cross the Mediterranean to Europe.

“So therefore, we have a common understanding that we have to first of all work on perspectives for the younger generation and that is the reason we are offering fund,” he said.

In his remarks, during the question and answer session, Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs, Mr Geoffrey Onyeama expressed concern on the number of irregular migrants leaving Nigeria.

He traced the cause of such a dangerous adventure especially for young people to economic security and the need for education.

He said that the Federal government would address the problems.

“We appreciate the willingness of your government to try to tackle some of those peculiar challenges especially Lake Chad, which has shrunk from 90 per cent to 10 per cent of its original size.

“The Lake is impacting directly on the economic life of 30 million people; these are all the areas we believe we should be addressing and the government is doing that,” he said.  (NAN)

  • Senate pledges support for NEITI through improved budgetary provision

    NAN-H-92
    NEITI
    By Kingsley Okoye
Abuja, Oct. 10, 2016 (NAN) The Senate Committee on Petroleum Resources (Upstream)  has pledged that the Senate  will continue to support the Nigerian Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative (NEITI ) through improved budgetary provision.

This is contained in a statement signed by NEITI’s Director of Communications, Dr Orji Ogbonnaya Orji and issued to newsmen on Monday in Abuja.

Orji said the Chairman of the Committee, Sen. Omotayo Alasoadura made the pledge during an oversight visit to NEITI’s secretariat.

Alasoadura stated that being a special agency of government, NEITI deserved special attention by way of adequate funding to ensure effective execution of its mandate of ensuring transparency in the extractive industry.

He said that the issues raised in NEITI’s audit reports were receiving the attention of the Senate.

Alasoadura however expressed dismay over poor funding of the agency.

He said that the Senate might need to review the law establishing NEITI to enable it retain a percentage of revenues recovered from the extractive companies to address funding challenges faced by NEITI.

The senator expressed satisfaction with the contributions of NEITI in the on-going reforms of the nation’s extractive industries.

The Executive Secretary of NEITI, Mr Waziri Adio informed the committee that NEITI was currently confronted with financial challenges.

He said that the financial challenges were capable of hampering the agency’s core mandate.

He appealed to the committee members to do everything within their powers to rescue the agency.

Adio emphasised the need for a new law for the petroleum sector, noting that the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) is one priority area the Senate needed to pay attention.

He called for a piece-meal approach to the passage of the PIB, adding that NEITI had legitimate interest in the bill.

He urged the Senate to work with all the relevant stakeholders to ensure that a new petroleum law was enacted and used as one of the strategies for economic recovery. (NAN)

  • Accountants have what it takes to add value to politics — ICAN

Accountants have what it takes to add value to politics — ICAN

    Politics
    By Lucy Nwachukwu
Abuja, Oct. 10, 2016 (NAN) Sen. Felix Bajomo, Past President, Institute of Chartered Accountants (ICAN), on Monday said that accountants had all that was needed to add value in the society.

Bajomo said while presenting an address on politics at the Celebration of the ICAN Political Ambassadors, organized by the institute in Abuja.

He, however, urged members of the institute not to shy away from participating in politics but to play their roles in political matters.

He explained that over the years ICAN members had considered politics a `dirty game’ and disassociated themselves from it.

“As it is now, we are celebrating 17 of our members who are involved in the foundation of politics and the wellbeing of our nation.

“Thank God that this people have taken the courage to do what they are doing and what they have done is an obvious fact that accountants have what it takes to add value.

“This ambassadors have told us that politics is not that dirty as we thought because if you are in politics and you are playing the role as you should, there is no way you will not add value.

“They are worthy ambassadors of our profession and it is appropriate to celebrate them and we have to continue to encourage our members to play their role in the society,’’ he said.

Mrs Winifred Oyo-Ita, the Head of Service of the Federation (HOS), urged ICAN members in various sectors of the government to be good ambassadors of the institute at all times.

“Now more than ever before the ICAN in us should be seen, those of us who are in the public sector, those who are in politics and those in the administration of today.

“More than ever before, accountability and anti-corruption is something that everybody is looking up to; Nigerians are no longer allowing the “business as usual attitude’’.

“Everyone is looking much deeper into the activities of government, wanting to know the value added by this administration.

“So it is very important that a forum like this is organised so that we can come together and apply our professional expertise for the growth and advancement of this nation,’’ she said.

Earlier, Mr Titus Soetan, the 52nd President, ICAN, said the institute was aware of the importance of politics in the affairs of a nation and could not isolate itself from it.

Soetan said that the participation of professionals in politics and governance would be of immense benefit to the profession and the nation at large.

He said,“ Today, I am delighted to note with pride that ICAN has 17 of its members at various levels of governance in Nigeria , which include five Executive Governors and one Deputy Governor.

“We have three Senators, five House of Representatives members, five Ministers and the Head of Service of the Federation.

“They are ICAN members who are decision makers at the topmost echelon of the public and private sectors of our economy.

Soetan explained that the value of nobility, sacrifice, honesty, care for others and respect for constituted authority are the hallmark of members of the institute.

“These behavioural elements are no doubt urgently required in the change mantra that will propel Nigeria to a better future and I am sure this value makes us proud of ICAN.

He further said that considering the value laden services that Chartered Accountants provided, their services were needed now in the country more than ever before. (NAN)

  • 2018 FIFA WCQ: Football stakeholders commend Super Eagles’ performance

    NAN-S-7

    Eagles
Abuja, Oct. 10, 2016 (NAN) Football enthusiasts on Monday commended the Super Eagles’ performance in their first match of the 2018 World Cup Qualifying Final Round, saying however that there was still room for improvement.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that goals by Alex Iwobi and Kelechi Iheanacho handed the Eagles a winning start in the match to record a 2-1 victory against Zambia.

A cross-section of stakeholders who spoke to NAN in Abuja said the team performed above average in the match played in Ndola on Sunday.

They however noted that there was still a lot of work to be done if the Eagles hoped to qualify.

Patrick Pascal, the Super Eagles’ Team Coordinator, said it was a great game, adding that the team approached the game with the right mentality.

“For us, we are very happy because we have begun our campaign on a winning note. The boys must be given all the credit they deserve.

“People must understand that away games are very difficult and so to have picked the maximum three points from this game tells you a lot about the mentality and discipline of the team.

“The Zambians tried all they could psychologically to ensure that we lost the game.

“They went ahead and fixed the game for 2.30 p.m. when the sun was at its peak, knowing that most of our players ply their trade in Europe. But the boys were up to the task,’’ he said.

Pascal also heaped praise on the new Eagles coach, saying he must be commended for his courage in fielding both Iheanacho and Iwobi, who are two youngsters.

“Some coaches will never take such a risk. They would have rather preferred to use the more experienced players.

“The only thing we need from the coach is results and Gernot Rohr has so far lived up to our expectations, recording two consecutive victories against Tanzania and Zambia,’’ he said.

Bitrus Bewarang, the Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), also commended the team for putting up a good performance against the Zambians.

Bewarang, however, insisted that Rohr still had a lot to do tactically in rebuilding the Super Eagles, in spite of the team’s good start.

He advised the Eagles’ handler to work harder in areas of building mentality, encouraging cohesion and avoiding costly errors.

“I congratulate Nigerians for the victory. It’s been such a long since we had such a decent result playing away from home.

“But that doesn’t mean we don’t have some mistakes to correct. I’m very sure that the coach will go back to the drawing board and work to improve on our deficiencies.

“However, our overall performance is commendable and I think if we continue with this spirit, we can qualify from our group.’’

Bewarang also thanked the Federal Government for its support to the NFF, adding that his contributions went a long way in helping the team succeed.

He called on all stakeholders to ensure all hands are on deck for the team to have a successful campaign.

Patrick Ngwaogu, the Vice-Chairman of FCT Football Association, on his part said the strong will of the entire team members to succeed was responsible for the victory.

“In spite of all the ups and downs associated with the team’s preparation before the game, they were able to surmount all the challenges and forge ahead to achieve this feat.

“I must salute the Technical Adviser and whatever it is that he did to awaken the `Giant of Africa’ spirit in the players.

“This is one of the things that have been missing in all cadres of our national teams,’’ he said.

Ngwaogu also noted that the synergy between the midfield and attack was fantastic, adding that the pair of Iwobi and Kelechi was a thorn in the flesh of the Zambians.

“I also never doubted the ability of Mikel Obi to give a world-class performance which had been missing in his games for some time now.

“Ogenyi Onazi, on his part, gave a good account of himself but needs to do more in terms of protecting the defence line than supporting the attack.

“The defenders were also very determined to do the needful and we all saw it in spite of some errors.

“Carl Ikeme was the Man of the Match for me as he displayed a high level of maturity in goal. He was very calm and relaxed. With such performances, the absence of Enyeama in the team would not be felt.

“Considering the team’s performance in the last two years, I will give them a pass mark. Nevertheless, I expect the coaches to pay a little more attention to the defence,’’ he said.

Mansur Abdullahi, coach of Warri Wolves, said it was a good result in spite of the fact that the technical crew was in the process of building a new team.

“There is the need to give the team some time to grow as we could see that the defence was a little bit shaky and that was why goalkeeper Ikeme had a lot of work to do between the sticks.

“There were also a lot of players who played out of position. But I am sure the coach is still experimenting with the players at his disposal.

“Ndidi Wilfred who played from the right-back usually plays from the left-back. Also, Shehu Abdullahi who played as a holding midfielder usually plays in the right-back position.

“I am sure he is trying to adjust the team to suit his ideas and the type of tactics and approach he wants as far as the game is concerned.

“He really has to work very hard because he has a great squad to work with,’’ he said. (NAN)

Ogah was allegedly quizzed outside a Tinubu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.by EFCC operatives who whisked him to their Ikoyi office for interrogation.

The police had filed a six-count charge bordering on conspiracy, forgery and fraud against Ogah, United Bank for Africa (UBA), and two of its female employees – Tammy Adoki and Augustina Ezenwenkwe.
