  • Be wary of hawkers of laboratory services, expert warns Nigerians

    NAN-HG-16
    Laboratory
Jos, Oct. 12, 2016 (NAN) A laboratory scientist, Mr Solomon Chollom, on Wednesday urged Nigerians to patronise only medical laboratories that were accredited and manned by certified scientists for diagnosis.

Chollom, who is the Chairman of the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria, National Veterinary Research Institute, Vom Chapter, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Jos.

He also advised the public to be wary of hawkers of medical laboratory services in market places and places of worship.

Chollom described those doing this as quacks, noting that some of them move about with computer gadgets.

According to him, they have no formal training on health matters and are only out to make money to the detriment of unsuspecting persons.

“Most persons in Nigeria patronise quacks who just open laboratories and they even go as far as to organisations to conduct tests for the ignorant populace.

“Rather than diagnose the right ailment, they come out with inaccurate results whereby the patients commence treatment for an ailment he or she does not have.

“They make the patient suffer untold hardship and pains because the accurate ailment he or she is suffering from hasn’t been diagnosed and treated,” the expert said.

He described a medical laboratory professional as one who had been duly trained in an accredited institution, passed requisite the examinations and had been licensed by the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN).

“The MLSCN is the statutory regulatory body of the profession empowered by the MLSCN Act 11 (2003) to among others regulate the practice of Medical Laboratory Science in Nigeria.

“Anyone claiming to work in the medical laboratory without due certification by MLSCN must be avoided by patients as he or she is a huge risk to patients’ safety,” he said. (NAN)

  • Liverpool bid to end woeful league run against United

    NAN-ELS-3
    End
London, Oct. 12, 2016 (Reuters/NAN) Liverpool will be looking to end a dismal Premier League run against Manchester United, and build on a promising start to the campaign with victory over their bitter north-west rivals on Monday.

Resurgent Liverpool are three points ahead of United in the table as Jose Mourinho’s rebuilding programme stutters.

But their current run of four successive league defeats to the Old Trafford club is their worst against them for eight years.

Liverpool, who knocked United out of the Europa League last season, have not beaten them in domestic competition since March 2014.

But they meet again for the first time in this campaign with Juergen Klopp’s men in supreme form.

They have won their last four Premier League matches and suffered only one defeat in all competitions so far.

In contrast, Mourinho’s men have won just one and lost two of their last four in the league, crashing 3-1 at Watford and being held at home by Stoke City.

In spite of the heavy investment in new players that followed Mourinho’s much-heralded arrival at Old Trafford, his team currently have three points fewer than they managed at this time last season.

Reigning champions Leicester City meet their league-winning predecessors Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, but neither club has looked like title material so far this season.

Chelsea currently lie seventh, five points behind leaders Manchester City, while Leicester, who shocked the football world with their title success last May, are marooned in 12th place, with just two wins from their first seven games. (Reuters/NAN)

    Campaign

    Monday Ijeh

Abuja, Oct. 12, 2016 (NAN) Dr Jarimi Muhammad of the Faculty of Education, University of Abuja, has called on the Federal Government to launch a campaign on access to education toward reducing illiteracy level in the country.

Muhammad made the call on Wednesday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

He also called for collaboration with traditional rulers to boost school enrollment.

The educationist blamed the increasing level of illiteracy in the country on poor funding, use of nonprofessionals and lack of commitment on the part of states and local governments.

“Government should collaborate with traditional rulers, community leaders, union leaders and other associations to launch a national campaign on access to boost school enrollment.

“Then, make a declaration on early childhood development on education, reduce the number of out of school children and move them into our formal schools.

“We have to do this by encouraging Almajari schools and involving state and local governments because this project has in the past been seen as Federal Government project,” he said.

According to the Don, Nigeria had good educational policies, but that challenges had been lack of continuity and engagement of nonprofessionals for their implementation

He cautioned against putting political interest in appointments in the educational sector, adding that political patronage had over the years had contributed to the failure of government policies. (NAN)

  • NEWS ANALYSIS: Diversifying economy via jatropha’s cultivation

    NANFeatures/Vol.10/No.236/2016 (Oct. 12)

    Generating incomes via jatropha’s cultivation

A News Analysis by Deji Abdulwahab, News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)

The Ministry of Environment recently organised international conference in Abuja entitled: “Diversification of the economy: The role of jatropha’’.

The Minister of Environment, Mrs Amina Mohammed, said at the conference that the aim was to develop a national strategy for the production, processing and marketing of jatropha.

Jatropha is an environmental and economic plant called binidazugu, lapalapa and Okwa Ekpu in Hausa, Yoruba and Igbo respectively.

Environmentalists observe that jatropha is drought-tolerant and has more than 175 species and it is used to produce bio-fuel.

It also serves as wind breakers and shelter belts to curb flooding, desertification and erosion.

To exploit its benefits optimally, Mohammed said the Jatropha Initiative would be facilitated and implemented through the National Agency for the Great Green Wall.

“I hope that by the end of this conference, we would have been able to come to terms on solutions to tackle the present and future problems.

“For us, our new narrative is couched in the Change Agenda and reflects the need to empower people, take climate action and protect the environment,’’ she said.

Similarly, the Minister of State for Environment, Alhaji Ibrahim Jibril, said the ministry would embark on the jatropha value chain project aimed at producing a viable green alternative to fossil fuels.

He said the project would provide an additional means of livelihood for local communities that were losing ground water and vegetation every year to desertification.

He said the project would diversify the Nigerian economy by empowering people, fighting desertification, reducing poverty and enhancing the nation’s socio-economic growth.

“Jatropha has been identified by the Nigerian Biofuel Policy and Incentives of 2007 as the most preferred non-food plant for bio-fuel feedstock for production in the country.

“The policy is set out to promote job creation, technology acquisition and foreign investment in the bio-fuel industry,’’ he said.

Reiterating government’s determination to boost jathropha’s cultivation, Senate President Bukola Saraki said the National Assembly would make laws that would transform the country into a greener and cleaner economy.

Saraki reiterated the commitment of the National Assembly to reinvigorating Nigerian biofuel policies to reduce dependence on imported fuel.

Also, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Yakubu Dogara, said the jatropha project would provide alternative farming strategies and create multiple income streams for farmers.

Dogara appealed to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and Bank of Industry and Agriculture to be part of the project.

In the same vein, Gov. Kashim Shettima of Borno commended the efforts of the Federal Government on the project.

He said the project would tackle desertification, drought and deforestation, especially in the northern parts of the country.

Further to this, CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele advised farmers who were interested in producing jatropha plant to access loans through the Nigeria Export Import Bank.

Also, Mr Ike Ubaka, the National President, All Farmers Association of Nigeria, appealed to farmers to cultivate the plant to enhance their incomes.

He listed some jatropha plant derivatives to include glycerine, crude oil and biodiesel.

He also urged the Federal Government to empower community farmers to cultivate large scale jatropha plants to boost the nation’s economy.

He said the Federal Government should make its diversification agenda to be community-based, stressing that the plantation of jatropha could assist in creating jobs and empowering women in rural communities.

Ubaka, who said jatropha’s seed could be processed to biodiesel the way palm kernel was processed to red oil, explained that he was using jatropha’s biodiesel to power his plant in his farm.

“Presently, Lufthansa Airline uses jatropha’s biodiesels for its aircraft,’’ he said.

Ubaka urged the Federal Government to encourage small and large scale farmers to go into mechanised farming of jatropha.

According to him, this will enhance job creation, poverty reduction and also assist in stopping rural migration in the country.

However, the Secretary, Jetropha Farmers Association in Plateau, Mr Luka Kefas, urged the Federal Government to subsidise farm inputs for them to enable them to increase production of the plant.

Kefas said the subsidy of farm inputs such as fertiliser and agro-chemicals would encourage more farmers to cultivate the plant on a large scale.

“Jetropha can diversify our economy if we are serious and if the government can give us support to do the production

“We are appealing to the Federal Government to give us support in terms of subsidy in the area of inputs, fertiliser, the agro chemicals and even the seeds.

“We need improved varieties to step up our production and at the national level also, we should have more of those that will buy our seeds,’’ he said.

Kefas said crude oil used in producing diesel, aviation fuel, kerosene and petrol as well organic fertiliser, livestock feeds and soap were derivatives of jetropha.

“There are more than 175 species of jetropha all of which are found to be of significant economic importance,’’ he noted.

He said the production of the crop was cheaper when compared with food crops and could easily be managed.

Kefas, who explained that the association had more than 100 members in Plateau, said that each of them cultivated nearly half hectare of the plant annually.

He appealed to young farmers in the rural areas to take advantage of the vast land in their respective localities to cultivate the plant and generate additional income.(NANFeatures)

Paris attacker’s lawyers resign; say his silence due to constant surveillance

    NAN-F-6

    Resignation

Paris, Oct. 12, 2016 (Reuters/NAN) Lawyers for the Islamist militants who killed 130 people in Paris in 2015 on Wednesday resigned from the role, saying his continued refusal to testify was due to the conditions of his detention.

“Salah Abdulsalam, who has been held in solitary confinement near Paris since he was captured earlier this year, does not want to talk, and no longer wants legal representation.

“We are convinced, and he told us so, that he will not talk and will use his right to remain silent.

“What can we do, I have said it from the beginning, if my client remains silent, I drop his defence,” his lawyers Frank Berton and Sven Mary said.

Berton said that Abdulsalam was refusing to talk because of the 24-hour-a-day camera monitoring in his high-security jail, conditions which the lawyers have repeatedly tried and failed to get changed.

“We have seen him slide away.

“Being watched all the time, with infrared at night, that drives one crazy, and that is a consequence of a political decision (to put Abdulsalam on continuous monitoring,” he said.

Abdulsalam’s Belgian lawyer, Sven Mary said the solitary confinement was causing Abdulsalam to clam up.

“The real victims of this are the victims of the Paris attacks.

“They have a right to know,” she said.

French authorities suspect Abdulsalam, who fled the scene but was captured later, of playing a part in the organisation of the multiple machine guns.

He was also alleged of suicide bomb attacks on a music venue and bars in Paris and at a football stadium on the edge of the city.

Abdulsalam had been spirited out of France and back to Belgium, his country of residence, by car in the hours after the attacks.

He was captured in Belgium and shipped to France earlier this year. (Reuters/NAN)

  • Coalition advocates 12-year compulsory free education policy in Nigeria

    NAN-H-3

    Education

    By Kate Obande

Abuja, Oct. 12, 2016 (NAN) The Civil Society Action Coalition on Education For All (CSACEFA), has called for the implementation of a 12-year compulsory free education policy in Nigeria.

Ms Chioma Osuji, Policy Advisor, CSACEFA made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Wednesday.

She said that the policy would promote quality education and sustainable development and help actualise the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Osuji said that the 12-year policy was necessary as it would cover both basic and senior secondary education.

She said this should replace the nine-year policy currently implemented by the Universal Basic Education Commission [UBEC].

Osuji added that implementing the policy would lead to the retention of more children in school and allow them to complete secondary school.

According to her, the policy would reduce the number of children that drop out of school due to to poverty.

The policy advisor believed that the free education policy would lead to higher literacy level and bridge the education gap among poor children.

“The nine years free education policy is not enough to promote development in the country as the children of the poor mostly drop out of school after Junior Secondary School education.

“If Nigeria wants to compete globally in terms of education, then there is urgent need to increase the free education policy to 12 years.

“The poor are the most marginalised in our society and for growth to be sustained and poverty reduced, they should be encouraged to go to school,’’ she said.

She charged the UBEC to consider the policy, stating that it is achievable.

On the re-introduction of History as a subject in secondary schools, Osuji said it was a welcome idea.

She described the initial removal of the subject as “a disaster waiting to happen.”

Osuji added that if the children don’t study history, they would never tell the story of how “Nigeria came about, and our origin would be lost in the future as generations to come would be totally ignorant.”

NAN recalls that the Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu at the 2016 National Council on Education meeting, announced the re-introduction of the subject in secondary schools.(NAN)
