    By Chiazo Ogbolu
Lagos, Oct. 22, 2016 (NAN) Mr Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, the Communications and Public Affairs Manager of Google, Anglophone West Africa, on Saturday urged Nigerians to utilise the organisation’s Do it yourself (DIY) YouTube video.

Kola-Ogunlade said in a statement in Lagos that Google should not be seen as a search engine alone, adding that it has other functions.

“You do not have to get a professional to do everything, there are things you can do yourself.

“So, let us imagine you want to replace your car battery and have no idea whatsoever on how to go about it, you look at the battery tray, the clams, and you wonder where and how to begin?

“Don’t feel lost. YouTube can help. YouTube has many DIY videos on even some of the most obscure things, like How to change a baby’s diaper?

“Whenever you need to self-improve fix, replace, modify or upgrade, there is a chance for a YouTube video that will help you do it, almost or just like a professional,” he said.

Kola-Ogunlade listed seven cool DIY: “How to make “REAL” Coconut Oil (old school); how to cover earrings with African fabric; Gele tutorial: Tie Aso-Oke Gele- Layers Technique.

Others are: “How to make Nigerian cake- all Nigerian recipes; how to replace a car battery; how to fix stuck on boot start screen problem in Android phone and tablet; and how to fix a toilet- fill valve replacement.’’

The Google manager urged users to click on Uniform Resource Locator (URL) for more information, https://www.youtube.com/watch? (NAN)

  • FG to provide more support for Armed Forces – Minister

    NAN-DS-18
    Support
    By Desmond Ejibas
Onne (Rivers), Oct. 22, 2016 (NAN) The Minister of Defence, Retired Brig.-Gen. Mansur Dan-Ali, said on Saturday that the Federal Government would provide more support for the Armed Forces, despite the country’s dwindling revenue.

Dan-Ali gave this assurance at the passing out parade of 90 new Direct Short Service Course 23 and 13 Special Duty Course 2016 cadets at the Nigerian Navy College Onne, Rivers.

He said the assistance would enable the military to succeed in its ongoing operations such as Operations Delta Safe and Tsare Teku in the Niger Delta and Operation Lafiya Dole in the North-East.

Dan-Ali said the operations were aimed at ensuring law and order as well as preserving the territorial integrity of the country.

“The President Muhammadu Buhari administration is ever committed and determined to honour its obligations to support capacity-building for the Armed Forces.

“Government is pleased that the Nigerian Navy has added a large number of platforms (war ships) to its fleet, which includes NNS Prosperity and Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPV).

“As we speak, the latest OPV to the fleet of the Nigerian Navy is underway from China to Nigeria to improve the defence of the nation’s maritime interests.

“The government is committed to performing its constitutional roles despite the present economic downturn, occasioned by dwindling oil prices and the spike in militancy and sabotage in the Niger Delta,” he said.

Dan-Ali said the 103 cadets started their training in March to become Commissioned Officers with a focus on contributing to the ongoing internal security operations across the country.

He urged the new officers to give unflinching loyalty to President Muhammadu Buhari as well as obey both civil and military laws.

“The cadets should note that their service would demand patriotism, professionalism, integrity, loyalty, tact, commitment to duty and respect and protection of human rights.’’

The minister lauded the Commandant of the Nigerian Navy College, Commodore Emmanuel Isreal and the Naval Training Command for the qualitative training at the college.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the minister inaugurated the refurbished hostel accommodation among other facilities at the college. (NAN)

  • NATE wants collaboration with governments, cooperatives on rice de-stoning machine

    NAN-H-8
    Machine
    By Chiazo Ogbolu
Lagos, Oct. 22, 2016(NAN) The Nigerian Association of Technologists in Engineering (NATE) has called for a collaboration with relevant government agencies and cooperative societies to commercialise its rice de-stoning machine.

Mr Kolawole Opadeji, the NATE chairman in Lagos State, made the call on Saturday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

“The intention of the association in fabricating the rice de-stoning machine is to make the work of local rice processors easier.

“This will enable the public to enjoy local rice without any traces of stone.

“We have set the ball rolling by holding meetings with various institutes and rice machine fabricators to ensure commercialisation of the machine and its proper usage,” the NATE chief said.

He said that marketing of the machine would increase local production and processing.

“It will reduce rice importation and guaranteeing job opportunities for the unemployed youth,’’ he said.

According to him, as regards commercialisation of the equipment, the association has set out plans to determine the number of people that will make use of the machine.

“The present capacity of available machine is big enough to remove stones from three tons of rice within an hour. This is almost a tipper load of rice.

“If a machine can work for three to four hours in a day, it will produce large quantity of rice.

“The main issue now is how to get cooperative societies to show interest in getting the machine for their members to enhance mass production of stone-free rice,” Opadeji said.

The NATE chief said that it would train the rice processors on how to use the machine to yield the needed result. (NAN)

  • Kwara United cut short holiday, regroup for FC Taraba replay

    NAN-S-2
    Replay
    By Olayinka Owolewa
Ilorin, Oct. 22, 2016 (NAN) Kwara United FC have recalled their players ahead of the replay of the Week 14 Group A2 match of the 2015/2016 Nigeria National League with FC Taraba.

This was contained in a statement issued on Saturday in Ilorin by the Media Officer of the club, Jimoh Bashir.

He said the match, originally played at the State Stadium on Oct. 2, ended a goal apiece.

But a protest filed by Wikki Tourists Feeders team accusing the two clubs of match fixing occasioned the replay of the match in Abuja as ordered by the Organising and Disciplinary Committe of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

The committee noted that the decision for the match to be rescheduled to Oct. 2 at 10.00 a.m. was not complied with as the match did not start as scheduled.

The committee therefore classified the match as ‘no match’ and ordered a replay in Abuja, under closed doors with close supervision by the NNL while FC Taraba were also fined one million naira.

According to the statement, the replay will now hold on Wednesday in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Kwara United resumed Saturday for training and will also train on Monday before departing for Abuja for the match.

A win for Kwara United FC means that FC Taraba will be relegated while a draw or win for FC Taraba will keep them in the NNL as Wikki Tourists Feeder team will drop to the Nationwide League.

Kwara United Chairman, Oladimeji Thompson, however, said in the statement that the team would abide by the decisions of the disciplinary committee and would honour the replay with FC Taraba on Wednesday.

He commended the players and officials for cutting short their holiday to honour the match, charging them to put in their best in the encounter.

“Even though the decision destabilised our programmes and also caused some level of inconvenience, we have to honour the match because we are a disciplined and law abiding club, ” he said.(NAN)

  • Association protects fingerlings

    Association protects fingerlings
    NAN-AE-2

    Protection

Dutse, Oct. 22, 2016 (NAN) The Association of Fishermen of Warwade Dam in Dutse Local Government Area of Jigawa, said it had engaged 10 guards to monitor the influx of fishermen from other states.

Malam Sabo Idris, the association’s Chairman, spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), in Dutse on Saturday.

Idris said that the move was to stop the fishermen from catching the fingerlings stocked in the dam by the State Government, as “they are too small to catch.”

NAN recalls that the Jigawa Government recently stocked the Warwade dam with 300,000 assorted fingerlings as part of its efforts to resuscitate fishing in the area.

The fingerlings, according to the state’s Commissioner for Agriculture, Alhaji Kabir Ali, were sourced within the country.

According to the chairman of the fishermen, all fishing activities in the dam are suspended for two years when the fingerlings must have grown.

He explained that the association decided to engage the guards in order to stop fishermen Bauchi, Kano, Kebbi, Taraba and Plateau states from fishing in the area.

“These guards are patrolling the dam for 24 hours with canoes in order to safeguard these fingerlings.

“This is because there are fishermen that come from states like Kano, Bauchi, Kebbi, Plateau and the rest of them.

“So, if care is not taken, before you know it, these fingerlings will be caught while they are still small”, Idris said.

Secretary of the association, Malam Abubakar Nuhu, commended the Jigawa government for stocking the dam with the fingerlings.

Nuhu said the gesture would go a long way in improving the availability of fish in Dutse and its environs.

He added that it would also boost fishing by the community and enhance the economic status of the fishermen.

“Not only stocking the dam with about 10 variety of fingerlings, the government also donated fishing gears such as nets, hooks, fishing containers and four canoes to us”, he said.

This, the secretary said, would also empower them to contribute meaningfully to the economic growth of their families, communities and the state.

Nuhu said that it would further make fishing attractive and reduce urban-rural migration among youths in the area. (NAN)

  • Jigawa: Residents of Takur Adua want bore holes

    NAN-AE-1

    Water

Dutse, Oct. 22, 2016 (NAN) The people of Takur Adua in Dutse Local Government Area of Jigawa, have called for the provision of bore holes with hand pumps to ensure water supply and sanitation in the area.

A cross section of the residents made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), in Dutse on Saturday.

A resident, Hajiya Maryam Umar said bore holes with hand pumps were ideal for the area due to lack of electricity.

“I have to buy water from vendors at N15 per 25 liter. I bought six Jerry cans of water this morning”, she added.

According to her, adequate water supply would also ensure cleanliness and good health for the people.

Another resident, Adamu Abdullahi, said lack of adequate water supply in the area militated against proper hygiene.

Adamu said the World Hand Washing Day was marked recently. It featured campaign for hand washing before eating and after using toilet.

“But lack of water will definitely militate against such campaign to promote hand washing and hygiene among people,” he noted.

Rufa’i AbdusSalam, a resident, added that providing adequate water would also prevent outbreak of diseases in the area due to the consumption of contaminated water.

AbdusSalam, therefore, charged wealthy individuals and philanthropists in the area to help in overcoming the challenge of inadequate water supply.

He also advised members of the public not to rely solely on the government for all their needs.

“Do something first according to your earning and then ask the government for the rest.

“This is because you don’t expect the government to provide you with everything, because there are other communities”, he added. (NAN)

  • APC confirms Eze as Acting Chairman in Ebonyi

    NAN-H-5

    Chairman

    By Chukwuemeka Opara

Abakaliki, Oct. 22, 2016 (NAN) The All Progressives Congress (APC), has confirmed Mr Nwachukwu Eze as the Acting Chairman of the party in Ebonyi.

The News Agency NAN reports that a High Court sitting in Abakaliki on Sept.28, struck out the case brought before it by a factional Chairman of the party, Mr Ben Nwaboashi.

Nwaobashi had challenged his removal from office by the Eze-led faction and the court presided over by Justice John Igboji struck out the case for lack of merit, saying that the removal followed due process.

Nwaboashi and Eze had been laying claims to the chairmanship position of the party since January until the Sept.28 ruling, which was in Eze’s favour.

Chief Emma Enukwu, the APC South East Zonal Chairman, told NAN on Saturday that the zone had recognised Eze as the authentic chairman of the party in the state.

“This is in line with the report of the committee set up by the party to review the lingering leadership tussle that had engulfed the Ebonyi chapter of the party.

“We are waiting for the final ratification by the party’s National Working Committee (NWC)”, he said.

On his part, Eze said he would concentrate on repositioning the party.

He said Nwaobashi’s supporters would be welcome into the fold but with the condition of maintaining discipline.

“Anyone who engages in anti-party activities will be sanctioned.

Nwaobashi, however, told NAN that the process was flawed.

“I don’t want to engage in a press war over this illegality”, he stressed. (NAN)
