Woman drags cousin to court for alleged cheating

    Cheating

    By Aisha Gambo

Kaduna, Sept. 18, 2018 (NAN) A 48-year-old woman, Rabi Muhammed, on Tuesday dragged her cousin, Magaji Dillali, 60, to a Sharia Court at Magajin Gari, Kaduna, for alleged breach of trust and cheating.

Muhammed told the court that she gave Dillali N500,000 to pay for a small house she wanted to buy at Rigasa.

“The house is worth N800,000 and I gave him N500,000 to pay the house owner, promising to pay up the remaining in a short while,” she said.

She said that she later heard that the house had been sold to someone and her money had been refunded which Dillali never gave her.

She, therefore, prayed the court to compel the defendant to refund her the money.

In his defence, Dillali denied the allegations, but said that he used the money to buy another place for her instead.

“I have three houses; how can I cheat her? I just bought a place for her as a brother who fears she might not spend the money wisely,” Dillali said.

He, however, prayed the court to give him more time so that he could sell off the place and refund the complainant her money.

The Judge, Malam Dahiru Lawal, ordered the defendant to provide a guarantor before leaving the court.

Lawal said court officials would inspect the place Dillali claimed he bought so as to ascertain its worth.

“Since the complainant wants her money back and not a replacement, you must sell it off and pay back her money or else one of your houses will be sold to get the money,” the judge ruled. (NAN)

“On Monday, Oct. 1 there will be a media broadcast followed by independence parade at Eagles Square by Para-military and Military, labour unions and Air Display by Air-force fighter jets over the skies.’’

According to him, there will also be a dinner/gala night at the State House Banquet Hall to close the celebration.

  • Explore alternative energy sources, experts tell entrepreneurs

    Experts
    By Ibukun Emiola
Ibadan Sept. 18, 2018  (NAN) Experts in the energy sector have urged entrepreneurs to explore alternative energy sources to boost operations of their small and  medium scale enterprises (SMEs).

Ayokunle Adenigba, an engineer with  Nexgen Energy and Allied Services Limited, told the  News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan on Tuesday that alternative energy sources would provide solution to the persistent energy crisis in the country.

“Power constitutes 40 per cent of the production cost for SMEs and the government has been trying to solve the various challenges in the power sector.

“  But if people are well enlightened,  there would be solution to the power issue in Nigeria as technologically,  we have advantage now with solar energy and others unlike before,’’ he said.

Taiwo Oriowo, a member of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) representing Zartech Limited,  said power remains  the backbone of every business in Nigeria.

“If the Minster of Power can help us to generate adequate megawatts of electricity for at least 18 hours a day for SMEs  and big industries, there would be many job opportunities for people in Nigeria.

“ If we look at it,  an average of about 75 per cent of  our people are not working with the government.

“ They are on their own and I can say that more than 50 per cent of them depend on power to work.

“ If we continue like this,  there would be more poverty and crime would persist, but  if you and I are busy doing something,  nobody will think of evil,’’ he said.

He stressed the need to strengthen institutions while promoting the  use of technology and alternative power sources  to boost  productivity. (NAN)

  • Man who stole employer’s N1m to spend 30 days in jail

    Prison
    By Deborah Akpede
Ikeja, Sept. 18, 2018 (NAN) A 26-year-old employee, Isaac Ayoke, is to spend the next 30 days in prison for stealing his employer’s N1million, an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos ruled on Tuesday.

Magistrate F.F George pronounced the verdict after the accused pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of stealing and burglary.

She sentenced Ayoke to 30 days imprisonment on each of the counts but ordered that the sentence should run concurrently.

George, who sentenced the accused without an option of a fine, said the convict should serve the sentence with hard labour.

“You are hereby sentenced to 30 days imprisonment with hard labour.

“The sentence would serve as a deterrent to others who might want to engage in similar acts,” she said.

The accused, a resident of Ajah area of Lagos, had during his arraignment on Aug. 14 admitted committing the offences and was remanded in prison.

When the case was called up on Tuesday for facts and sentence, he again admitted guilt and the magistrate consequently convicted and sentenced him.

The prosecutor, Sgt. Godwin Awase, had earlier told the court that the accused committed the offences on July 7 at Mushin in Lagos State.

He said that the accused burgled one of the offices of GHL Glass Tech Nigeria Ltd. where he stole N1million.

“The accused, after closing hours, broke the ceiling to gain entrance into the office where the money was kept.

“He bolted away with the money and refused to report for work the following day,” he said.

Awase said that the burglary and theft were recorded by the Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) camera installed within the company.

“The management played the CCTV camera and discovered that the accused was the culprit.

“They went in search of him and caught him in his brother’s place where the money was recovered from him.

“He was handed over to the police,” the prosecutor said.

The offences, he said,  contravened Sections 287 and 307 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. (NAN)
