Madrid, Sept.18, 2018 (Reuters/NAN) FIFA president, Gianni Infantino has expressed doubts about La Liga’s plan to host Girona’s home game against Barcelona in the U.S.

The Spanish league wants the fixture to be played in Miami on Jan. 26, 2019, but the president of soccer’s world governing body is not keen on the idea.

“I think I would prefer to see a great MLS game in the U.S. rather than La Liga being in the U.S.,” Infantino said in a statement provided by FIFA to ESPN on Monday.

“In football, the general principle is that you play a ‘home’ match at ‘home’, and not in a foreign country.”

La Liga have asked the Spanish federation to approve the game to be held overseas, while U.S. Soccer, FIFA, UEFA and CONCACAF, which represents North and Central America and the Caribbean, must also agree for plans to go ahead.

FIFA told ESPN it had not yet been officially asked to give its consent for the game to be held in the U.S.

La Liga president Javier Tebas responded on Twitter to Infantino’s disapproving comments.

“I will remind the president of FIFA that in the MLS three teams from Canada play and Toronto FC are the current champions, and in Canada there is a professional league,” wrote Tebas. (Reuters/NAN)

  • Farmers harvest 724,000 metric tons of Ginger in Kaduna

Farmers harvest 724,000 metric tons of Ginger in Kaduna

    Ginger

    By Shuaib Sadiq

Kaduna, Sept.  18, 2018 (NAN) Farmers in Kaduna State have harvested a total of 723,971.56 metric tons of Ginger in the 2017 cropping season, a check by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reveals.

NAN reports that Ginger is being produced in Kachia, Jemaa, Zangon Kataf, Zonkwa, Kagarako, Jaba, Kaura, Kajuru, Sanga, and Lere Local Government Areas of the state.

Ginger is used largely for industrial and private consumption across the globe.

Mr Reuben Sonkob, Deputy Director, Monitoring and Evaluation at the State Agricultural Development Agency (KADA) told NAN in Kaduna that the figure was realised in spite of the challenges farmers faced during the season.

“Our records for 2017 showed that Ginger farmers harvested 723,971.56 tons of the crop in 2017 in spite of  various challenges the farmers faced  in the course of cultivating the crop,’’  Sonkob said.

The state Chairman, Ginger Farmers Association, Mr Nuhu Najira, said apart from the 9,560 members of the association, other farmers were also engaged in the production of the commodity.

He however said that lack of credit facility and poor financing from government and the private sector had limited the scope of cultivation of ginger in the state.

According to him, commercial banks are not willing to lend to farmers at single digit interest rate while the Federal Government Anchor Borrowers program had not approved the more than 5,000 applications it received from ginger farmers during the season.

“Commercial banks are asking for 28 per cent interest rate for farmers to access credit facility from them.

“We had negotiated to reach up to 12 per cent interest but the banks declined and insisted on 28 per cent,” the chairman said.

He also identified lack of modern inputs and facilities to accelerate farming such as quality seeds, tractors, fertilizer and chemicals from the state government as other impediments limiting ginger cultivation in the state.

Najira added: “The last time we received these inputs was in 2014 and since then, we go through all the processes individually and as an association, but to no avail.

“Again, after production we face another set of challenges of poor pricing and so much interference by middlemen.

“This has led to the fall in the prices of the commodity both at local and the international market.

“In 2017, the prices of the commodity dropped to as low as N8, 000 from N17, 000 per bag in the local market and similar drop was recorded in the international markets.

“This happened at a time when farmers spent as much as between N900, 000 and N1.2 million as cost of production per hectare.’’

The chairman also noted that the farmers require modern storage facilities for their produce to maintain quality so as to attract good price at the international market.

He explained that local storage of the commodity had resulted in losses to farmers due to exposure to different kinds of contaminations which reduced the quality and standard required for export.

However, Mr Francis Danfulle, Deputy Director, Agric Extension Services at KADA, explained that ginger farmers did not access funding support through the Anchor Borrower Programme due to the refusal of farmers that benefited from the facility to pay back loans granted them in 2016.

According to him, more than 30, 000 farmers applied for Anchor Borrowers credit facility when it was introduced in 2016 and 11, 000 of them cultivating other crops were unable to pay back the loan granted them.

He explained that it was a revolving loan, which would only be granted to those in need when previous beneficiaries paid up.

On access to fertiliser, Danfulle said the state government only facilitated the supply of the commodity by private companies who sale at government approved price of N5, 500 per bag.

He said that the same policy applied to other farming inputs.

The official stressed that in spite of the hitches, Kaduna state remains the highest producer of ginger in the country.

The deputy director said with the support of extension workers, farmers now harvest 20 tonnes per hectare, but said the ginger farmers still need to adhere strictly to international rules of drying and storage in order to reap maximum benefit.

“Most farmers prefer to manage their crops by themselves, instead of following the guidelines from the extension service workers,“ he noted.

Ginger is being grown in the southern part of Kaduna state for domestic use for ages while commercial production began around 1927.

Available records showed that by 1966 Nigeria had become the second largest world exporter of ginger after China.

However, exports fell due to the Nigerian civil war, unattractive prices and poor support from government, and since then Nigeria’s production was overtaken by India and China.

NAN gathered that out of the figure being cultivated in the country, 10 per cent is reported to be locally consumed as fresh ginger while 90 per cent is dried primarily for export.

Nigeria is the third largest exporter of ginger in the world after China and India, and the Nigerian ginger is well known and on high demand across the globe.

A large percentage of the commodity is exported to China, United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, Netherlands, France, United States of America, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Chad, Sudan and Ghana, among others. (NAN)

    Igbaugba Ehigimetor
Benin, Sept. 18, 2018 (NAN) No fewer than 42 communities in Esan South East Local Government Area of Edo, have been submerged by flood.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that over 8,000 houses and thousands of hectares of farmland were affected by the flood.
The communities which are mostly on the bank of River Niger, had their crops, such as rice, were washed away by the flood.
The council chairman, Mr Victor Emuankhagbon, while lamenting the loss, called for urgent assistance for the victims.
He said because of the enormous destruction occasioned by the flood, there was little or nothing the council could do.
While noting that no fewer than 30,000 persons were displaced by the flood, he said a temporary camp was set up to accommodate the displaced.
“It is huge natural disaster which mainly affected Ifeku Island and Illushi mainland. The destruction is such that I cannot quantify the loss.
“I am appealing to all relevant government agencies, as well as the state and Federal government, to come to the aid of the victims.
“The disaster is mind boggling. Homes are submerged, some destroyed, farmlands and crops washed away. People don’t have homes to sleep in, no dry land to even cook their meals.
“We are in the process of evacuating them to safer locations. But the job is obviously beyond us; hence we are calling on both the state and federal governments to come to our aid without delay,” said Emuankhagbon.
The council boss listed some of the affected communities to include: Illushi Oji, Oji Ozigono, Oji Awenje, Ajobe, Ajabutu, Owoli, Iyegbi and Ukpodo.
Emuankhagbon noted that four wards out of the ten wards in the council, were affected by the disaster. (NAN)

  • Sunny yellows shine on gold carpet at TV's Emmy awards

Cute couple: Benedict Cumberbatch looked dapper as he posed with his stunning wife Sophie Hunter at the Emmy
    Awards on Monday
    Fashion
Abuja, Sept. 18, 2018 (NAN) Hollywood’s top TV talent stepped out in bright yellow and sparkling white gowns, jumpsuits and tuxedo jackets that complemented a gold carpet as they arrived for a too-close-to-call Emmys race on Monday.
Actresses Alison Brie, Judith Light and Tatiana Maslany all chose sunny yellow for the television industry’s highest honors, which were being handed out in a downtown Los Angeles theater on a hot late-summer day.
Bucking the heat, Light wore a slim, long-sleeved, yellow gown with a turtleneck. “Orphan Black” star Maslany wore a custom pant suit with a yellow one-shouldered top, black pants and a yellow sash cascading from her waist to the floor.
They walked a carpet that was colored gold instead of the traditional red to celebrate the Emmys 70th anniversary.
White also was popular, the pick of Kristen Bell and Scarlett Johansson. “The Sinner” star Jessica Biel wore a strapless white gown with a scallop pattern and full skirt.
Men on the carpet followed suit. Sixteen-year-old “Stranger Things” star Gaten Matarazzo donned a gold jacket, and “This is Us” actor Milo Ventimiglia’s tuxedo jacket was white. “Barry” actor Henry Winkler accented his black tux with a yellow tie.

Some of the top nominees stood out in bright colors. Actresses Rachel Brosnahan and Sandra Oh shined in red, while Elisabeth Moss wore traditional black.
Jennifer Lewis, an actress on “black-ish,” sported a red-and-black Nike sweatshirt with a sparkling silver swoosh logo, which she said was a show of support after the brand featured NFL star Colin Kaepernick in a new ad campaign. Kaepernick was the first NFL player to kneel during the national anthem as a protest against racism.
“The artist’s duty is to reflect the times,” she said. “I stand up for what I feel is right.”
The late-summer heat hung over the carpet. “I’m just looking for water,” said “Barry” star Bill Hader, dressed in a black-and-white tuxedo.
“Black-ish” star Tracee Ellis Ross picked one of the most daring outfits – a hot pink gown with a full pleated skirt and large puffy top. Ross said she spotted the Valentino gown on a runway in Paris.
Tiffany Haddish also stood out with a striped blue, red, yellow and green dress.
“Seven Seconds” star Regina King wore a bright yellow, sleek strapless gown, and comfortable shoes.
“I have on vintage Guccis that are mine,” King said. “They are broken in. They are dancing shoes.” (NAN/Reuters)
