  • Consolidated Hallmark pays N542m total dividend, N5.10bn claims in 2023

    Dividend
    By Rukayat Adeyemi
L-R: Group Executive Officer Consolidated Hallmark Holdings PLC, Mr Eddie Efekoha, Chairman, Mr Shuaibu Idris and Company Secretary, Ms Rukevwe Falana at the inaugural AGM of the Holding on Wednesday in lagos
Lagos, June 26, 2024 (NAN)Consolidated Hallmark Holding Plc has declared a total dividend of N542 million for the financial year ended Dec. 31, 2023, which was approved by its shareholders.

Mr Shuaib Idris, Chairman of the Board of Directors, disclosed this at the inaugural Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the company, which became a holding company in November 2022.

Idris said that the amount translates to a dividend of five kobo per ordinary share of 50k, payable and subject to the appropriate withholding tax.

“Upon your approval of the proposed dividend, the bank accounts of qualifying shareholders who have updated their records with the Registrars shall be credited beginning from the end of this meeting.

“Our commitment to adequate returns on investments to our shareholders through consistent dividend payment remains firm, and we shall stay focused on that pathway,” he said.

On the company’s financial performance for the past year, the chairman stated that the firm’s insurance revenue rose by 32 per cent to N15.7 billion in 2023, from N11.9 billion recorded in 2022.

Idris said that the company’s total assets increased significantly to N26.2 billion, compared to N18.2 billion in 2022, indicating a 44 per cent increase.

He stated that the holding’s pre-tax profit also grew to N4.6 billion in 2023 from N983 million in 2022.

According to him, the total profit attributable to the company’s shareholders for the year under review stood at N3.8 billion, up from N547 million recorded in the previous year.

The chairman said that despite the odds in the year under review, the company was able to record significant improvements in key financial indicators during the 2023 financial year.

Idris noted that, like other years, factors impacting the company’s performance transcended the local scene, with some stemming from the international space.

“Major factors which greatly impacted the operations of companies in the Nigerian business environment during the year under review include instability in power supply and unprecedented devaluation of the Naira.

Other were sharp increases in prices of petroleum products, money and equities market and high inflation with its impact on the purchasing power of the populace,” he said.

Idris further stated that the Nigerian insurance industry, which is the primary industry of the holding’s major subsidiary, saw remarkable growth during the financial year, hitting the one trillion Naira mark in premium income for the first time in 2023.

He attributed some of the success to the increase in the premium rate for Third Party Motor Insurance from N5,000 to N15,000 by the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM), effective Jan. 1, 2023.

However, the chairman noted that inflationary trends and foreign exchange crises negatively impacted the disposable income of insurance buyers.

On the holding’s future outlook, Idris said that the company, though a non-operating holding company, would strive to effectively carry out its primary functions of maintaining control over its subsidiaries.

Idris disclosed that the company would also establish additional investments in diverse sectors where opportunities arise, protect the group’s assets, and provide strategic direction.

In his address, Mr Eddie Efekoha, the Group’s Chief Executive Officer (GCEO), said the group’s claims settlement in 2023 was N5.10 billion, compared to N4.47 billion in 2022.

Efekoha stated that the group remained committed to prompt claims settlement across health insurance, micro life assurance, and general business and special risk insurance.

“One of our major strategies remains the prompt payment of fully documented claims; hence, the amount expended on claims has risen significantly over the years as we fully meet our obligations.

“This has continued to endear us to our clients in retail, corporate, and brokerage. We have further simplified processes using technology to fast-track the claims,” he added. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Lagos Bus Service unveils  policy to reduce carbon footprint

    Policy

    By Chiazo Ogbolu

Lagos, June 26, 2024 (NAN) The Lagos Bus Services Ltd. (LBSL) has unveiled a policy to reduce carbon footprint of its mass transit system and ensure a  greener and more sustainable future.

The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of LBSL, Mr Idowu Oguntona, made this known at the fifth anniversary of the organisation’s existence, on Wednesday in Lagos.

Oguntona said that the LBSL Sustainability Policy was a strategic framework developed on the Lagos State Climate Action Plan and Lagos State Transport Policy.

According to Oguntona, the policy represents a significant milestone in the organisation’s journey toward a greener and more sustainable future.

“By integrating environmental, social and governance principles into every aspect of our operations, we are not only enhancing the quality of our services but also contributing to the overall well-being of our dear Lagos State and Nigeria at large.

“Currently, the transport sector is responsible for generating about 20 per cent of the state’s greenhouse gas emissions.

“In response to this challenge, we are determined to lead by example in reducing the carbon footprint of our bus mass transit system,” he said.

He said that the policy was driven by the organisation’s mission statement – to provide smart and sustainable bus transportation solutions to meet the needs of a modern city.

He added that the organisation introduced a state-of-the-art sick bay which reflected its dedication to the health and well-being of employees.

He said that some achievements that had shaped LBSL’s path included  more than 52 million  passengers  and over 27 million kilometres  coverage across over 30  routes.

“Our driver training academy has produced over 1,862 graduates,” he said.

The managing director said that LBSL had a total of 850 employees, of which 216 had spent more than  five years with the company.

Mrs Abimbola Akinajo, Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), which is LBSL’s regulator, appluaded the organisation for the policy.

Akinajo said that Lagos believed in sustainability of the transport sector.

She said that the achievment of LBSL within five years demonstrated  the commitment of its staff.

“As your regulator, we see what you do and we can say that the LBSL is the one that carries the largest numbet of passengers daily in Lagos.

“You are doing something right that we are proud of, Lagos residents appreciate your job. Please do keep it up,” she said.

Mr Olawale Musa, Permanent Secretary, Lagos Ministry of Transportation, said: “We are aware of your pains and sufferings. Your CEO writes concerning the complaints, and we shall surely overcome.”

The state Commissioner of Transportation, Mr Oluwaseun Osiyemi, said that the  achievements of the organisation in the last five years depicted consistency and good leadership.

“What you do is provide service, you have direct interface with passengers, you are doing something good to have the ridership.

`’Please, do not drop your service level, it is extremely important.

“High capacity buses are used for many reasons: one is to reduce the number of cars on the road; secondly, it is for environmental issues.

“The more  the number of bigger buses, the less the number of  cars and the less carbon emissions. LBSL plays a role in this space,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the  anniversary featured presentation of awards to 216 pioneer staff of the organisation. (NAN)(www.nanmews.ng)

2,600 killed in 50 Benue communities attacks in one year – Amnesty International

    Attacks

    By Nicholas Dechi

Makurdi, June 26, 2024 (NAN) 2,600 persons, mostly women and children, have been killed following attacks on 50 Benue communities between January 2023 and February 2024, Amnesty International says.

Amnesty International Programme Director, Mrs Barbara Magaji, disclosed this during a photo exhibition and news conference on Wednesday, in Makurdi.

Magaji further said 18 out of the 23 local government areas (LGAs) in the state, were constantly under security threats by armed attackers.

“These attacks are significantly affecting food security and livelihoods because the affected communities are farmers and displacement make them unable to carry out any farming activity.

“These displacements are having significant and adverse effects on the right to livelihoods, and depriving thousands of children of the right to education and development.

“As of March 2023 when the last counting and documentation was done, the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps and host communities accommodated a total of 489,245 IDPs,” Magaji said.

She further quoted the state’s Ministry of Education and the Teaching Service Board as saying that, at least 55 schools had been destroyed by armed bandits or closed down due to insecurity, leaving hundreds of children out of school.

She stressed the need for Nigerian authorities to end the attacks in Benue because they had a duty to protect lives.

She maintained that governments at all levels must ensure that these attacks were investigated and justice given to victims and their families.

“Nigerian authorities must ensure that suspected perpetrators of human rights abuses are brought to justice through fair trial.

“Nigerian authorities must investigate the security lapses that enabled gunmen to carry out attacks and get away with it.

“People who are displaced must be provided with adequate humanitarian support, standard of living and children’s education must be continued,” Magaji said.

Meanwhile, in his goodwill message, the Commanding Officer, 72 Special Forces Battalion, Lt Col. R.B. Kefas, who was represented by Lt Danjuma Abba, stated that criminality had been curtailed in all the crisis prone areas, promising that the efforts would be sustained.

Also, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Steve Yabanet, who was represented by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr Okon Asuquo, said that the police was working round the clock to reduce criminality to the barest minimum in the state. (NAN) (www.nannews.g)

  • Army tasks media on effective reportage of successes against insurgents

Commander 13 Brigade, Calabar Brig. Gen. Muftau Ibrahim and Chairman NUJ, Cross River Council during a courtesy visit of the Union to the brigade.

    Insurgency
    By Christian Njoku
Calabar, June 26, 2024 (NAN) Brig.-Gen. Muftau Ibrahim, the Commander, 13 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Calabar, has urged the media to adequately report the successes of the military in the fight against insurgency.
Ibrahim made the call in Calabar on Wednesday when the leadership and members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Cross River Council, visited him.
The commander who acknowledged the role of the media in nation building, said that there was need to give more exposure of the wins of the military than the activities of criminals.
“All the criminals need is to win once and they are all over the media, but the Nigerian military wins everyday, yet no one notices.
“Without the media beaming their light on the activities and wins of the Nigerian Army, it will not be known and there will be a lot of misinformation.
“Sometimes, we take action that the civil populace don’t understand. Sometimes too, there are accidents, but our overall intention is the peace and security of the country,” he said.
Ibrahim said that the social media had become an emerging source of worry to the society because it was now an unguarded avenue to peddle falsehood and provocative statements.
“People hide under the social media to make inciting and highly provocative statements capable of destroying the society.
“It is unpatriotic to make statements that threaten the security and development of the nation.
“It is important that we love, secure and be patriotic towards our nation. I don’t believe that anything is wrong with Nigeria,
“The citizens are the ones who give the nation a bad image, but in reality, this nation is blessed, we must change from this,” he said.
The commander further said that no form of insurgency or militancy would survive without the support of the local populace.
He said that Cross River had remained relatively peaceful and stable because the residents were naturally peaceful people.
Earlier, Mrs Archibong Bassey, the Chairman, NUJ, Cross River Council, commended the army for the enormous security work it was doing in the nation, saying that the force had not been adequately appreciated.
“We only appreciate the army during the Armed Forces Remembrance Day, this is not enough, we need to appreciate the heroic achievements of the force.
She added that the union was ready to partner the army in the campaign against insecurity by ensuring that its achievements were adequately reported.

  • Complete ongoing renegotiation of agreement to avert strike, ASUU urges FG

    Renegotiation
    By Olatunde Ajayi
Ibadan, June 26, 2024 (NAN) Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has called on the Federal Government to complete the ongoing renegotiation of the agreement earlier reached with the union to avert another strike.

ASUU Chairman, University of Ibadan (UI) branch, Prof. Ayoola Akinwole, made the call during a town hall in Ibadan on Wednesday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the town hall was organised by ASUU to sensitise parents, students and the general public on the need for government to address the issues affecting university education in Nigeria.

Akinwole listed ASUU’s demands to include: logical conclusion of the renegotiation of 2009 FGN/ASUU agreement, funding for revitalisation of public universities based on the FGN-ASUU MoU of 2012, 2013, and the MoA of 2017.

Others are: reinstatement of the governing councils in universities, release of unpaid salaries of staff on sabbatical, release of deductions, payment of Earned Academic Allowances, proliferation of public universities, implementation of UTAS in place of IPPIS and implementation of visitation panels’ reports.

“There are templates on ground that we expect this government to implement. All that need to be done are already in the template.

“We are holding similar town hall meetings at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, and other schools to make our position known to the public.

“Government should not wait till when another industrial action is declared before looking at our demands.

“Government has not sat down with ASUU and concluded discussions on what led to the industrial crises in the 2020 and 2022.

“We want government’s response expeditiously because the patience of our members is getting thinner and thinner by the day,” he said.

Akinwole said that the union had written an open letter to the government on its demands through newspapers, as all the letters previously written had neither been acknowledged nor replied.

“What we are saying in the open letter is that we are giving government another period of four weeks, starting from June 8.

“If, at the expiration of the four weeks, government fails to take any positive steps toward addressing the outstanding issues, the union will be forced to look for other means of expressing its grievances,” he said.

On the issue of minimum wage, the union leader said that it was unfortunate that government chose to step it down for another round of consultations.

Akinwole wondered how long it took the federal government and the national assembly to sort out the re-introduced national anthem.

He decried a situation whereby government had to continue consulting when it comes to issues concerning the masses, the workers and the downtrodden.

In his remarks, the Students’ Union President, University of Ibadan, Bolaji Aweda, pledged the union’s support to ASUU.

According to him, ASUU’s demands will lead to improvement in the standard of university education in Nigeria.

A parent, who was also one of the speakers at the meeting, Mrs Oluwakemi Ademola-Aremu, called for more investment in education so as to positively train the minds of the youth who would become leaders in the future. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
