Tafawa Balewa (Bauchi) Nov. 6,2016 (NAN) Women in Tafawa Balewa town of Bauchi State have ventured into the selling of dog meat, once the exclusive preserve of men in the area, and are making brisk business.

A Correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) who visited the town on Sunday, reports that the business was providing financial succour to a lot of women.

Some of them who spoke to NAN said they veered into the trade because the menfolk appeared not to be interested in the business any longer.

They said even though in the past, meat selling business was exclusively reserved for the men-folk, it had now become an ‘all-embracing’ trade for both men and women.

Mrs Lucy John, one of the butchers, said some women decided to take to the trade because their male counterparts were gradually abandoning it and venturing into other trades.

She said that dog meat, being a delicacy in the area, was fast becoming a scarce commodity in the market because the male butchers were gradually abandoning the business.

John said the neglect of the business by men had opened up an opportunity for women, not just to prepare and sell dog meat, but also breed and market the animal, especially because of the lucrative nature of the business.

She said that during festive seasons, they made ‘good money’ because dogs were expensive, with the least price being N5000.

“The abandonment of the trade by men created an opportunity for me and other women to make money, feed our family and satisfy other needs of our people.

“Selling dog meat is the best as people in the community love eating the meat,’’ she said.

John said during the celebration of an annual cultural festival in Tafawa Balewa, she slaughtered four dogs at the cost of N25, 000, sold the meat and made huge profit.

“We need to do this for survival and since dog meat is preferred in this community, we make business out of it.

“I used to slaughter only one dog at a time but I now kill six,” she added.

Another woman, Mrs Blessing John, also corroborated the statement of Lucy, saying that this was ‘boom time’ because of the just concluded and impending festivities.

She said she had slaughtered six dogs during a recently concluded cultural festival, adding that each ‘piece’ of meat was sold at N100.

“Our men no longer do this (selling dog meat) because they are no longer interested, and for us women, we need to survive, as such had to engage in the trade since the patronage is very high.

Madam Kyauta Illiya, a consumer of dog meat, explained that the delicacy had a unique taste as such she preferred eating it over any other meat.

She said dog meat had become a favourite cuisine among some people of the area, and had value.

Mr Isiaku Gambo, another consumer, claimed that dog meat had medicinal effect as it could serve as cure for some diseases.

He insisted that eating dog meat prevented one from any attack and also served as an antidote to some diseases.

“If you serve me varieties like fish, cow, chicken and dog meat, I will opt for dog meat because the meat is nice.

“In this community, those who eat dog meat are the strongest,’’ he said. (NAN)

    By Mohammed Mamman
Damaturu, Nov.6, 2016 (NAN) Mr Mustapha Gajerima, Yobe Commissioner for agriculture, has advised farmers in the state to stop selling their farm produce “recklessly” to grain merchants.

Gajerima gave the advice in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Damaturu.

He said that report had reached the State Government that grain merchants were moving around states to buy newly-harvested farm produce at low prices.

“We heard that grain merchants are moving from one state to another to buy newly-harvested farm produce to hoard and sell later at exorbitant prices.

“Some parts of the state experienced agricultural inactivity in the previous year due to security challenges that created food insecurity; we must caution our farmers to avoid food scarcity,’’ he said.

According to him, farmers generally in the state recorded bumper harvests of rice, millet, sorghum and soya beans this year.

“The bumper harvest recorded by farmers this year was due to government quick response to repel swarms from destroying farm crops,’’ the commissioner said.

He said that government had commenced effort to resuscitate the grain reserve programme to provide good market for farmers and to ensure food security.

He urged communities living on the bank of river Yobe, to commence irrigation farming to produce food needed for the state and export, adding that government would support irrigation farmers to grow more crops. (NAN)

  • National carrier: Expert advises FG to create level playing field for airline operators

    NAN-H-19

    Advice
    By Adekunle Williams/Solomon Asowata
Lagos, Nov. 6, 2016 (NAN) An aviation analyst, Mr Olumide Uhunayo, has advised the Federal Government to create a level playing field for airline operators, saying that it would intensify modalities to float a new national carrier.

Uhunayo, Head of Strategy, Zenith Travel, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Sunday.

NAN reports that the Minister of State, Aviation, Sen. Hadi Sirika, had recently announced that the government had appointed a transaction adviser for the new national carrier.

He had expressed optimism that the national carrier would take off in the next 12 months, under a public-private partnership.

Uhunayo stressed the need for Nigeria to have a strong airline that could compete favourably with its foreign counterparts.

However, he said that what the country needed was a national airline policy that would strengthen the industry and its domestic airlines, not necessarily a national carrier.

He said: “When you look at the situation right now, you will see that some of our airlines are crumbling; so we need another carrier to compete.

“The government needs to work out the modalities to midwife this airline because we cannot have a national carrier that will be given undue favours by the regulators, against domestic competitors.

“There should be a level playing field. The airline must go through all the necessary documentation and safety processes.

“The only time the airline should be favoured is when it is operating outside Nigeria, against other foreign airlines, but once it is here, it should be subjected to the same regulations like its domestic counterparts.’’

According to him, a strong new carrier will increase competition, employ Nigerians and provide options for travellers.

Uhunayo also called for the review of the Bi-lateral Air Services Agreements (BASAs) entered by Nigeria with some countries which have been having a negative effect on domestic airlines.

He said: “the truth is that it is not all BASAs that are profitable.

“We have about five airlines that had the International Air Transport Association Operational Safety Audit Certificate, yet some of them have gone down.

“This certificate was supposed to give them the advantage to compete globally and benefit from the BASAs but unfortunately they went down.

“Most of our airlines don’t have commercial agreements with foreign airlines which would have been very beneficial to them.’’ (NAN)

“I have constituted a committee, led by the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), with Divisional Police Officers (DPO) and other senior officers, to take over the daily running of the camps.
“It is interesting to say that most members of the committee are females,” he said.
” I have also mobilized over 100 women police from different divisions, including mobile police women, to handle day-to-day interaction in the camps.
“The male officers will be limited to handling of the territorial coverage and patrol with in the camps,” he said.
He said that the objective was to further secure the camps and give confidence to the thousands of women in the IDP camps.
“The deployment of women police is also to dig out true happenings in the camps regarding the allegation.
“We feel that the victims might not want to talk freely to men, but they will be encouraged to open up to women policemen if the allegation is true,” Chukwu said.
He insisted that prior to the alarm raised by the international Human Rights organization, the police had not received any complaint on the alleged abuse. .

“We have not received any complaint on any case of Human Rights abuse in the camps, so the whole thing appear strange to me; in each of the camps, we have many police outpost.

“In Bakassi camp for instance, we have five police units because every Local Government Area in the IDP camp has its DPO and other policemen, with all the complement of law enforcement,” Chukwu said.
He however said that police investigation would unravel the truth of the matter once and for all. (NAN)
