  • Dance instructor calls for FG’s partnership to train upcoming artistes

    By Taiye Baiyerohi
Lagos, Nov. 16, 2016 (NAN) A dance instructor, Isioma Williams, has called on the Federal Government and corporate organisations to provide a viable platforms through which talented individuals could be trained in drumming and dancing.

Williams told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Lagos that such would enable interested individuals to pursue their career goals.

The instructor said that the government needed to partner with dance and music instructors to effectively train talented upcoming artistes.

He added that his call was based on a recent experience he had with individuals in the ongoing “Jang-gu Drumming Workshop’’; but lacked the means to complete the programme.

“I have to give some discounts and I have been responsible for their breakfast since the commencement of the workshop.

“We need assistance from the Federal Government and corporate bodies that can partner with us to groom upcoming artistes,’’ Williams said.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the “Jang-gu Drum’’ is a South Korean drum which has some similarities with the South-West Bata Drum.

Williams said that after the drummers had been trained, they would in turn train others like them; thereby promoting the Nigerian cultural heritage through the process.

“We will be achieving a lot when these people are trained, our culture will be preserved.

“Then we can have a larger transportation of our indigenous dance and music to the foreign world,’’ he said. (NAN)

  • Judiciary must fight corruption, says Osinbajo

    NAN-H-146
    Judiciary
Abuja, Nov. 15, 2016(NAN) Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Tuesday said it was fundamental for the judiciary to fight corruption in order to protect its independence.

He said this at the 2016 Fellows Lecture and Conferment of Honourary Fellowship on him and three others by the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (NIALS), in Abuja.

According to him, the most potent threat against judicial independence is corruption.

Osinbajo wondered how a compromised judge could be fair and just if a litigant could buy justice.

“But, (and this is fundamental), it is to protect judicial independence that we must fight corruption’’, he said.

Osinbajo noted that judicial independence was spoken of sometimes as though it was a favour being done to the judiciary saying “no, it is not. It is not a favour or a privilege to them.

“It is the essence of our system of justice. A judge must be independent for at least one reason: so that he or she can be fair and just, without fear or favour.

“This is why the executive must neither interfere in judicial process nor attempt to compromise judicial independence in any way.’’

The Vice President said those in the legal profession owed themselves a duty to preserve the administration of justice system.

“Not only because it is the last hope of the common man but because this is our means of livelihood.

“Our profession and the credibility of the administration of justice system depend entirely on public confidence.

“Once that is eroded because of the delinquency of a few, we, the majority must fight hard against it’’, he added.

The Vice President remarked that Nigeria’s formal legal tradition is over 100 years old, adding that the tradition had three established components: the Bar, Bench and Academia.

He said each branch had distinguished itself through the years and had attained world class status.

“In all the serious researches on the best known administration of justice systems, it is evident that at various points in their histories, the institutions were challenged by  falling standards, corruption, and abuse of office.

“When this occurred, the profession itself had often made the first and farthest drastic moves to self-correct.’’

He, however, observed that one of the great difficulties of the legal profession in Nigeria was the shyness and reluctance of the practitioners to call themselves to order.

“Nobody wants to be held responsible for possibly ending the career of another.

“So, we watch the decay and gradual collapse of an excellent tradition built on the self-restraint, sacrifices and integrity of many in the past 100years.’’

Osinbajo warned that such posture should stop to save the profession and the nation.

He commended the NIALS for its commitment to the highest academic traditions and for the awards.

“As fellows, we pledge our commitment to the Institute’s mission of being the nucleus and hub of legal research and advanced studies in law in Nigeria.’’

A delegation of Niger Delta Peoples Congress led by the Amanyanabo of Twon Brass, King Alfred Diete-Spiff later visited Osinbajo to address the lingering security and development issues in the region.

Chief Mike Loigho, a delegate, told newsmen the visit was to reaffirm the commitment of the congress towards ensuring security in the region and support the initiatives of the Buhari administration in that direction.

He said, however, that there was the need to carry all the Niger Delta stakeholders in the peace initiatives of the government.

“We don’t have any political affiliation to any group but we have come genuinely concerned to solve this problem once and for all’’, he said.

According to him, the group has seen in Buhari a President that is very honest with governance and issues that affect Nigeria who wants a roadmap for the resolution of the conflicts in the region. (NAN)

  • Delta CJ calls for periodic reform of Judicial system

    NAN-H-143

    Justice

Asaba, Nov. 15, 2016 (NAN) The Chief Judge (CJ) of Delta, Justice Marshal Umukoro, has said that reforms in the nation’s judicial system must be constantly reviewed in order to meet the yearnings of a changing society.

He made the observation in his address on Tuesday at the opening of a two-day conference of the Network of Justice Sector Reform Teams (JRTs) held at the conference hall of the Grand Hotel, Asaba.

“The political reform of the judiciary must constantly be reviewed or reformed to reflect the constant dynamics of the society. It must not be treated like a work-up project or be left in that state like that for a century.

“Efficient justice delivery anchored on constant reform is, therefore, central to the economic growth and development of the state,” he said.

He said that the administration of justice in Nigeria and Delta State needed serious reform to meet the exigencies of growth and reduce the delay of cases in court and the failure to deliver justice.

The CJ called on stakeholders in the justice sector in the state to work together in upholding a sound and efficient justice system for the joy of the citizens.

“To achieve this, all the important stakeholders, such as the judiciary, the NBA, the Ministry of Justice, the Police and the Prisons must work together,” he said.

Umukoro disclosed that the Delta Judiciary is ‘reform-minded’, stressing that under his watch, it has made some modest contribution through the support of the reform team.

“These supports had been with the efforts of the Delta State House of Assembly Committee on Judiciary on the domestication of the administration of criminal justice bill.

“The bill, which presently awaits its final reading, is expected to be passed soon,” he said.

Earlier, Mr Peter Mrakpor, Delta Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, had, in his welcome address, called on participants to use the opportunity provided by the network to examine the challenges of Witness Protection.

“It is so evident that most witnesses don’t want to come to court because their lives are threatened. This is a very serious challenge we must review if the justice system must work efficiently,” he said.

Mrakpor also disclosed the commitment of the judiciary in Delta towards ensuring prompt and speedy justice in the prosecution of all cases of rape, defilement and sexual assault.

“This is because in our society today, the cases of rape and sexual assault have taken a frightening proportion.

“So, I must say that reforms are necessary and commendable in order to make our judiciary what it ought to be; a judiciary that every citizen will be proud of,” he said.

He reiterated the state government dedication to improving the lot of the judiciary in the state through capacity building for efficient and effective justice delivery.

In his remarks, Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta, represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr Festus Agas, pledged the commitment of the state government to improved justice delivery in the state.

“I am pleased to inform you that the outcome of the deliberations of the retreat on the Administration of Criminal Justice Bill has been presented as a public hearing organised by the Delta State House of Assembly for legislative action.

“It is my hope that within the nearest possible time, the bill will be passed and forwarded to me for necessary accent,” he said.

In his address, Prof. Mohammed Tabiu, Co-Chairman of the Federal Reform Team, said that the team was committed to achieving the objectives of the network.

“The whole idea of this network is to see how we can collaborate with all our justice institutions for a better justice delivery,” he said. (NAN)

  • Atiku Abubakar distributes food items to IDPs to mark 70th birthday

    NAN-H-145
    Atiku
Yola, Nov. 15, 2016 (NAN) Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, on Tuesday, distributed food items to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) residing in Yola town and environs to mark his 70th
    birthday.

Abubakar, who addressed the IDPs at a ceremony in Yola, said that the gesture was to show concern on the plight of the IDPs and to assure them of his commitment to continue to support them.

He said “I have told my friends and associates not to waste money buying birthday cards and other gifts for me but to use the money to buy foodstuff for you.

“Its unfortunate that you are affected by Boko Haram insurgency, but I want to assure you that if I were in government, Boko Haram would not have happened.”

He added that the last administration handled the Boko Haram issue with kid glove, and recalled how the administration of President Olusegun Obasanjo, whom he served as vice president, crushed such uprising in Yobe.

The former vice president then blamed the current recession in the country on the last administration and urged the public to bear with the present administration’s effort to tackle the situation.

He also urged the Federal Government to do more on the plight of IDPs to enable them to go back to their communities and pick up their lives once again.

Dr Margee Ensign, the Leader of the Adamawa Peace Initiative (API), a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), said that the NGO, through the support of the former vice president, had for the past two years supported IDPs in the state.

Ensign said the Initiative distributed food items to 5,000 IDPs families to mark Abubakar’s
    birthday.

Responding on behalf of the IDPs, Mrs Mairo Alhassan, lauded the humanitarian gesture of Abubakar and urged others to emulate him.

She said “you have been playing a significant role in our lives and we can only thank you by saying God bless you while we urge other rich individuals to emulate you.”  (NAN)
