  • APC will rule Nigeria beyond 2019, says Guru Maharaj ji

    By Suleiman Shehu
Ibadan, Nov. 18, 2016 (NAN) Satguru Maharaj ji, the Founder of the One Love Family, says the APC will rule Nigeria  beyond 2019 in spite of the acrimony in the party.

The sect leader said this in Ibadan on Friday  at a press conference  to mark the 36th anniversary of the group.

He said what the ruling APC needed to do was to ensure that those who defected from the PDP to the party were monitored to ensure that they do not tarnish the good intention of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Maharaj ji also said the defection of some PDP members to APC was to escape prosecution for offences with which they had been charged.

The sect leader said Nigeria was in need of leaders like Buhari in order to create a new country to be proud of.

He further urged the APC to work for the suspension of any minister or lawmaker under probe for acts of corruption until cleared.

“If this is complied with, APC will stand by the name of Maharaj ji.

“ I will make sure I support the party so that Nigeria would be free to enjoy the dividends of democracy.

“ Those that steal Nigeria’s money cannot escape; they would be fished out and forced to return every kobo they have stolen.

“I recommend to the Federal Government to give one per cent of any loot recovered to any Nigerian who is able to offer fruitful information on such hidden money.

“ This would assist in the speedy recovery of stolen money and create a new image for Nigeria to the outside world.

“ Presently, the whole world looks at Nigeria as a country that encourages corruption,’’ Maharaj ji said.

Reacting to Donald Trump’s victory as U.S President , the sect leader said the new administration would bring greater benefits to Africa and the global community.

According to him, Trump is a wise man judging from his plans to tackle illegal migration and terrorism. (NAN)

  • LOC, SWAN sign MoU on media operations, publicity at 2016 CAF Beach Soccer Championship

    NAN-S-21
    MoU
    By Bushrah Yusuf-Badmus
Ilorin, Nov. 17, 2016 (NAN) The Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the 2016 CAF Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations and the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) on Thursday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

A press release on Thursday by Olawale Alabi, the SWAN Secretary-General, said the MoU was in relation to the competition’s media operations and publicity.

He said the signing ceremony was held at the LOC secretariat in Lagos, with the LOC Chairman, Seyi Akinwunmi, and SWAN President Honour Sirawoo signing on behalf of both bodies.

While speaking at the occasion, Akinwunmi said the MoU was conceived towards achieving the stated objective of delivering the competition and making it the best ever held.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the competition is scheduled to open on Dec. 13 at the Eko Atlantic City in Lagos.

Akinwunmi, who is also the First Vice-President of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), said the interface through the agreement was a landmark event in institutional relations for the good of the game.

“The agreement entails the guarantee by the LOC of adequate and functional facilities for media and publicity operations while SWAN is to ensure maximum publicity with accurate and real-time reporting of the event to both local and international audience.

“The agreement states that SWAN shall provide adequate and coordinated media coverage of the 2016 AFCON Beach Soccer Tournament and ensure adequate publicity before during and after the tournament.

“It is also to utilise the media to mobilise the public and handle the conduct of pre- and post-match interviews.

“On its part, the LOC shall ensure the provision of access to the on-site media centre for accredited journalists and provide a workroom with desktops, laptops, printers, photocopiers, wireless fidelity (wifi), conference room and mixed zone.

“These will be for interviews, equipment support and other facilities to enhance the work of journalists,’’ the LOC Chairman said.

He added that the LOC wanted the event to be world-class.

“One of the ways to achieve this is through the media, as well as how the event is packaged and communicated to the public.

“I and my colleagues in the LOC are happy to interface with SWAN in this regard because it is high time we started interfacing properly.

“We must grow our sports and interface in a different way from the past, to ensure accountability, responsibility and mutual respect,” Akinwunmi explained.

“Members of our committee have expressed total support and commitment to the MoU. What we have signed may just be paper but the spirit of the understanding is what is important.

“Over time, this will strengthen institutional relations. We will provide all that is needed by the media to perform. It is a Nigerian project and we expect the media to deliver to project Nigeria as serious and capable.”

In his remarks, the SWAN President noted that the objectives of the association emphasise commitment to not just publicity but also the promotion of sports.

He said in Great Britain, as well as in other top sporting nations, the body of sports journalists work with the organisers of sporting events, sometimes as consultants, to ensure success.

Sirawoo said this was the new direction of SWAN.

“Our objective is to promote our sports and we have started by opening a new vista in creating relationships to drive sports.

“We have journalists who are very knowledgeable and experienced in sports administration and management, following long years of practice and coverage of various events.

“This agreement will give them room to contribute much more,” he said.

The SWAN president said Nigeria’s image needed to be well projected and the National Executive Committee of the association supports this initiative overwhelmingly.

“They (the 2016 CAF Beach Soccer LOC) have asked us to do whatever is possible to ensure that the event is successful.

“We will keep to our bargain and if there are areas that are not captured, we will look at them for mutual understanding and immediate action.”

Sirawoo also asked the LOC to consider the possibility of organising a clinic on beach soccer for journalists in order to enhance the quality of media output on the event.

Head of the Media Sub-committee of the LOC, Nansel Nimyel who expressed his delight at the interaction, also emphasised that the global perception of the event rests on how SWAN discharges the mandate.

“This relationship is a product of a leadership thinking out of the box. It is a win-win for both the LOC and for SWAN.

“SWAN can hold the LOC to accountability to provide requirements for media efficiency at the beach soccer tournament.

“We will provide the basic things with support facilities, including volunteers to help out. We want a seamless operation to project the event as world class.

“How the world sees and perceives the event depends on how the media pushes it out.

“The aim is to give a good impression of the host city, the LOC and Nigeria and, who knows, if we do well, we may have the privilege of hosting the FIFA World Beach Soccer Championship,’’ he said.(NAN)

  • PDP leadership crisis: Court of Appeal reserves judgment

    NAN-H-121
    Judgment
    By Martins Odeh
Abuja, Nov.16, 2016 (NAN) The Court of Appeal on Thursday in Abuja reserved judgment on the appeal challenging the  affirmation of Ali Modu Sheriff as the authentic National Chairman of  the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

On June 29, Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court upheld Sheriff as the Acting National Chairman of the party.

Justice Ibrahim Salauwa, the Chairman of the Special Panel of the appellate court, reserved the judgment after counsel to the parties adopted their addresses.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the appellate court on Nov.11 granted Sen. Ahmed Makarfi, Sen. Ben Obi and Eyitayo Jegede leave to appeal the decision.

The decision bestowed the Sheriff’s faction of the PDP the right to conduct governorship primary of the party for the Nov.26 Ondo State governorship election.

NAN further reports that the dispute later resulted in an interlocutory ruling by Justice Abang who ordered Jegede’s candidacy to be substituted with that of Ibrahim Jimoh.

Dissatisfied with the decision of the lower court, the appellants approached the appellate court for reversal.

In his argument, Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN) counsel to the appellants submitted that the trial court erred in the two decisions.

Olanipekun said that Jegede emerged as candidate of the party to contest the Ondo governorship election from well conducted primary recognized by the National Working Committee of the Party.

“The National Executive Committee of the party as well as the National leadership headed by Caretaker Committee supervised the primary in Akure.

“Who should be the authentic candidate of the party, Ibrahim Jimoh that was a product of a gathering in Ibadan?’’

“The selection of candidates for elections is solely the right of the political parties and not to be done by the court.

“The court also lacks the jurisdiction to appoint leaders for political parties,’’ he said

Olanipekun urged the court to set aside the decision of the lower court and uphold his client, Jegede as the candidate of the party for the Ondo election.

However, Mr Beloulisa Nwafor (SAN), counsel to Mr Biyi Poroye Ondo state chairman of the PDP and nine others, prayed the court to dismiss the appeal, adding that it was not ripe for hearing.

Nwafor said the court also lacked jurisdiction to entertain the appeal.

Poroye and the nine others had approached the Supreme Court to challenge the leave given to the appellants to appeal the decision of the lower court.

“Your Lordships, I urge you to wait until our appeal is determined before any proceedings can take place.

“Alternatively, if the court will not be stopped by the pendency of our appeal at the Supreme Court, then the court should review the objections we raised against this appeal,’’ Nwafor said.

He argued that the appellants filed two different appeals with contradictory pleadings and described that action as abuse of court process.

“It is trite in law that when two processes are filed in a matter with similar characteristics, the later should be dismissed.

“The appellants have in this case relied on the process filed on Nov.16 which contradicts the one they filed on Nov.15.

“The implication of this is that there is no appeal before this court and therefore we urge the court to dismiss this appeal forthwith,’’ he said.

On his part, Mr Raphael Oluyede, counsel to the PDP said he was unable to turn in his counter affidavit but prayed to align with Nwafor’s submissions.
