    By Aisha Cole
Lagos, June 26, 2024 (NAN) The Managing Director of Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Mohammed Bello-Koko has commended the economic policies of President Bola Tinubu which attracted global applause and transformation of the maritime industry.

Bello-Koko made the remark during an unscheduled visit to the Lagos ports access roads on Wednesday.

“The decade-long traffic gridlock was recently cleared by the NPA,’’ the managing director said in a statement made available to newsmen.

He also applauded the leadership style of the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola.

“As part of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, the sanity that has since returned to the ports access roads will be sustained to promote ease of doing business and drive exports to enhance Nigeria’s balance of trade,” Bello-Koko said.

He said that in spite of the global economic headwinds that characterised the year 2023, the Nigerian Ports Authority, succeeded in maintaining the momentum to surpass its  performance of the year 2022.

According to him, the implementation of continuous performance improvement measures resulted in unprecedented revenue generation and remittances to the Consolidated Revenue Fund (CRF) of the Federation.

“This revenue is steadily growing from N361 billion in 2022 to N501 billion as at December 2023; and remittances increasing from N93.4 billion in 2022 to N131.2 billion by year end 2023,” Bello-Koko said.

He noted that taxes paid to the Federal Government also grew at various times in the period under review up to $77.7 million and N17.6 billion respectively.

“The forecast such as the $1 billion worth reconstruction of Tin Can Island Port Complex and the comprehensive rehabilitation of Apapa, Rivers, Onne Ports, amongst others.

“It is evident that the Nigerian Ports Authority has been positioned to not only create but sustain superior performance necessary to maximise the comparative advantages that Nigeria’s maritime endowments confer, ” he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

  • 2 million people in South-South use psychoactive substances- NDLEA

    Substances

    By Jane-Frances Oraka

Onne (Rivers) June 26, 2024 (NAN) No fewer than 2.1 million persons aged between 15 and 64 years in the South-South region, use psychoactive substances, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has said.

Stella Ngwoke, the Commander, NDLEA command in Port Harcourt Ports, made the disclosure in Onne on Wednesday at an event to mark the 2024 United Nations International Day Against Drug Abuse.

Ngwoke who quoted statistics from the National Drug Use Survey, 2018, said that about 14.3 million persons aged between 15 and 64 used illicit drugs in the country.

“We are talking about drug use for non-medical  purposes. It has also been discovered that one out of every four drug user, is a woman.

“In Rivers, the prevalence rate is 15 per cent of the said population which is  estimated at 580,000 people,” she said.

The commander listed, hemp, tramadol, morphine and cough syrups containing codeine as the mostly abused substances in the South-South region.

Ngwoke said that the current realities about drug intake in the country required that governments at all levels and relevant stakeholders should rise to the occasion.

She said that NDLEA had already taken proactive steps to ensure a balanced approach towards reducing the demand  for the regularly abused drugs.

The NDLEA official said that part of the approach was the suppression of the supply of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances as stipulated in the National Drug Control Master Plan, 2020-2025.

The commander said that already, the agency’s interdiction effort at the ports had led the the seizure of large shipment of drugs from India.

Ngwoke stated that in May, the agency seized no fewer than 1,750 cartons of cartons of cough syrup with codeine, weighing 26,250kg.

‘”Also, in June, another seizure of 875 cartons of cough syrup with codeine, also containing 17,500 bottles, and weighing 26,250kg was made.

“The street value of the drug in these two operations is estimated at over N4 billion,’’ she said.

Ngwoke said that in addition to the seizure, mop-up operations were carried out around the Port Harcourt Ports corridor to dislodge drug joints.

Also speaking, the Special Guest of Honour, Mr Mohammed Babadende, expressed worries that drug abuse was ravaging the country.

He said that drug abuse had since metamorphosed into a global problem with a multifaceted challenge that touched on the lives of millions of people globally.

Babadende commended the NDLEA for working assiduously to tackle drug abuse, trafficking and addiction in the country.

“We all know that drug availability, affordability and accessibility are directly influenced by addiction,” he said.

Mr Bayo Adepoju, the Deputy Director, Port Operations, NAFDAC, said that although tramadol and codeine were prescription drugs, it is illegal for anyone to have them in large quantity.(NAN) www.nannews,ng

Hamzat urged them to always remember the sons of whom they are, to remember their homes and upbringing; never to lose their heads; and be rest assured that the state would be behind them.

”Never forget your roots and the values that will shape your character, remember the ‘Omo Luabi’ ethos in us as Yoruba, which should be taken to the military.

”Show that you can build a country that is better than the ones our fathers have built and that is capable of making you a better soldier,” he said.

He urged them to be more determined, as everything in life required determination, stressing that it was important they represented the state and country well.

According to him, the Nigerian Army is an evolving system, which is getting better; more advanced than before; and more technologically grown.

  • ASUU decries poor infrastructure in public varsities

    Infrastructure

    By Sunday John

Lafia, June 26, 2024 (NAN) The Federal University of Lafia (FULafia), chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has decried the poor state of infrastructures in public universities in the country.

Dr Sunday Orinya, Chairman of the union in the institution, voiced the concern during a peaceful protest it organised on Wednesday in Lafia.

Orinya, who explained that the protest was in compliance with the directive of its National Executive Council (NEC), called on the Federal Government to honour all agreements reached with the union.

“NEC directed all branches to sensitise and mobilise her members for a possible strike action over the silence of the federal government on the lingering issues affecting public universities.

“The looming industrial action is a resolution reached by ASUU at its emergency NEC meeting held recently at the University of Abuja,” he said.

The Chairman particularly called on the federal government to implement the renegotiated agreement reached with the union in 2009.

“For the avoidance of doubt, there was a joint renegotiation committee of the 2009 agreement comprising representatives of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), and the ASUU team, which produced the first, second and third draft agreements.

“The first draft was coordinated by the Emeritus Prof. Munzali Jibril, who took over the chairmanship of the joint renegotiating committee from Dr Wale Babalakin.

“The draft was submitted in May 2021, but was rejected by government a year later; but the second and current draft came to be after the government’s team was reconstituted in April 2022 chaired by emeritus Prof. Nimi Briggs.

“The Briggs-led committee commenced work with extensive consultations; they met heads of relevant units in the MDAs and shared a written submission of the findings with ASUU.

“We were assured that the new committee had a clear mandate to review the Munzali-led committee’s report through a collective bargaining process in tandem with the principles of the International Labour Organisation (ILO), but to no avail,” he explained

The chairman appealed to the federal government to immediately implement the agreemnt in order to forestall another round of industrial action that would distort academic activities in public universities.

The News of Nigeria (NAN), reports that some of the demands included new salary package and conditions of service, funding for the revitalisation of universities, payment of backlog of Earned Academic Allowances and accumulated promotion arrears.

Other demands of the union are payment of withheld salaries, adoption of the University Transparency and Accountability Solutions (UTAS), with concurrent discontinuance of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS), among others. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng).

  • FG, development partners chart climate-resilient path for Nigeria’s WASH sector

FG, development partners chart climate-resilient path for Nigeria’s WASH sector

    WASH

    By Tosin Kolade

Abuja, June 26, 2024 (NAN) The Federal Government has announced partnership with development partners to chart a climate-resilient path for the country’s Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) sector.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that experts at a three-day national workshop gathered to develop the Climate Risk Analysis and Action Plan for the sector on Wednesday in Abuja.

The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Utsev, emphasised the sector’s role in promoting dignified lives and sustainable development amid climate change challenges.

Utsev, who was represented by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Alhaji Aliyu Shinkafi, said climate change presents a significant threat to humanity, impacting WASH services globally.

He noted that the hazards of climate change exacerbate vulnerabilities in WASH facilities, leading to social and economic risks.

He added that “in Nigeria, only 10 per cent of households have access to basic WASH services, while 23 per cent lack basic water supply, according to the 2021 WASHNORM report.

“These include increased household medical expenses, reduced agricultural productivity and higher incidences of civil unrest.”

These figures, he added, underscored the urgency to address climate-related risks in the sector.

He cited recent cholera outbreaks as a stark reminder of the critical need for robust WASH services in the country.

According to him, the Climate Risk Analysis and Action Plan aims to tackle the challenges head-on, providing comprehensive framework for assessing climate impacts across geopolitical zones.”

Utsev urged participants to prioritise behavioural change, capacity building, innovative technology and community engagement for climate-resilient WASH services.

“This plan is about long-term solutions to ensure climate resilience in WASH infrastructure and practices to benefit future generations.

“Education on climate-resilient practices is essential for both children and adults to foster sustainable habits,” he said.

While calling on stakeholders to play active roles in the initiative, the minister assured the ministry’s resolve to continue to allocate resources and create an enabling environment for climate-resilient WASH.

Earlier, Mr Mukaila Babarinde, the Director of Hydrology in the ministry, highlighted the critical impact of flooding in Nigeria, affecting 34 out of 36 states.

He explained that “as of November 2022, the situation had a devastating impact on 3.2 million people, resulting in 600 deaths and displacing 1.1 million individuals.

“Erratic rainfall patterns and rising sea levels are increasingly challenging the maintenance of Nigeria’s fragile WASH infrastructure, particularly during floods and droughts.

“Flooding causes severe damage to homes, farms and infrastructure, and it can also harm water and sanitation facilities.

“This pollution of water sources and damage to sanitation systems increase the risk of waterborne and vector-borne illnesses.

“Drought, on the other hand, reduces the availability of safe drinking water for households.

“This scarcity makes it difficult to maintain proper sanitation and hygiene practices during climate crises.”

Babarinde emphasised that the situation not only poses immediate health risks to families but has far-reaching impacts on education and the economy.

He noted that the Climate Risk Analysis and Action Plan assesses Nigeria’s current climate conditions across geopolitical zones and proposes innovative solutions to enhance WASH services.

On his part, UNICEF WASH Manager, Chiranjibi Tirawi, said climate change poses the most significant threat to humanity today, impacting every sector, including water services.

He explained that majority of hhouseholdsin the country already face challenges with limited access to quality water services, underscoring the timeliness of collaborative efforts to change the narrative.

Goodwill messages were delivered by representatives of WaterAid, state water agencies and the Ministerial Advisory Council, urging collective action to protect those most affected, particularly at the grassroots. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Abeokuta, June 26 , 2024 ( NAN) Mrs Bamidele Abiodun, wife of Ogun governor, has called for a ban on the sale of sachet alcoholic drinks in the country.

It is a global event celebrated on June 26 each year to strengthen actions and cooperation to achieve a world free of drug abuse and related problems.

“The reason, among other factors, is the proximity of the state to the borders.”

“They consume the drinks in a high rate in order to get high , which subjects there lives to distress,

“Let us be reminded that these youth are the future leaders of this country,
