  • Operators say quality of education in private varsities is high

    NAN-H-61
    Universities
Ibadan, Dec. 1, 2016 (NAN)  The operators of private universities in Nigeria say the quality of their products high in spite of the opinion that the reverse is the case.

The operators expressed the view in a survey conducted by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Chief Afe Babalola (SAN), the proprietor of  Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti, said the  institution had invalidated the assumption that private universities were offering inferior education.

The legal luminary and former pro-chancellor of   University of Lagos, said many students of the institution had won laurels on graduation.

“ In the last six years, the university has emerged the best college of law in West Africa, our students in the last Bar examination recorded two first class and 16 second class, upper division

“We are the first university in Nigeria to secure full accreditation for medicine within five years of our establishment.

“ We are the first university to secure full accreditation in nursing within five years, we are also  the first university to secure 100 per cent success in its nursing examination as well as 100 per cent success in medical laboratory science examination  in the country.

“The Nigerian Society of Engineers has just described our engineering programme as the template for engineering education in Nigeria.

”What is more, if quality education in private universities is low, how come we are always the best everywhere?’’ Babalola asked.

He said that the university took off with 600 students and currently had no fewer than 7,000 students.

A parent, Mr Julius Awodumila,  said private universities remained the best option and alternative toward meeting the education demand of applicants.

Also, Mr Adebayo Olagunju, Public Relations Officer of  Achievers University, Owo, Ondo State, said  private schools were bridging the gap in admission of students.

Olagunju said so many people would have been denied access to education if not for the private institutions.

He said that even with the high fees in private universities, many students had continued to embrace private institutions as alternatives to the public institutions.

“We also have to employ very qualified teaching staff.

‘’This is more pronounced in private universities because NUC inspects them very thoroughly.

“It is not true that we admit only those students who can’t meet the stipulated  UTME  cut-off mark because all institutions are regulated by JAMB.

“And there are even some courses that require not less than 200 UTME score for admission and all our students are qualified.

“Private institutions don’t toy with their students; the lecturers are close to them, so they have ample time for their studies.

“Anyone who wants to make good grades has the opportunity to do so due to attention and the few number of students,’’ Olagunju said.

A  Senior Lecturer at Fountain University, Osogbo, Dr  Goke Lapade, said the consciousness in planning in  private universities made them academically viable.

“Private universities in Nigeria make conducive environment a priority in the course of planning and this  aids  learning and makes it easier for students.

“Their environment is so conducive for learning, coupled with provision of education facilities.

“ This has contributed to higher turnout of first class graduates than what is obtainable in the public universities, ” he said.

He said efforts should be made to change the situation in  public universities and make it more comfortable for students to achieve  better performance.

Similarly, a Senior Lecturer with Osun State University, Osogbo,  Dr Kayode Ajulo, said many  private universities were committed to producing quality graduates because they received  motivational salary package.

Mr Tajudeen Akinlabi, a Research Fellow at the College of Health Science, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology,  Osogbo,  said the advantage of private universities was inherent promptness and exactness.

Akinlabi said majority of private universities graduates were excelling in the labour market because of the dynamism of learning structure on the campuses.

A graduate of accounting, Babcock Universiy, Mr Tobi Okinbaloye, said the private university authorities and students were more committed.

” You will not hear cases of social vices like cultism and  robbery in private universities.

“In my view, the private universities are making positive impact on the education development efforts of the Federal Government,’’ he  said.

A parent, Mrs Bose Adeyinka, dismissed the view that private universities students were lazy.

She said the standard of most private university graduates was better than those of the public  universities.

“Private universities are equipped with professionals from across the world who had made their mark in different fields.

“So, those students have worked hard to obtain the  first class grade they obtained as far as I am concerned,” Adeyinka said.
However, Prof. Jide Owoeye, the Chairman of the Governing Board of Lead City University, Ibadan, said  private universities had not filled up to 50 per cent of their admission quota.

He said the population of students in private universities were not up to 10 per cent of their admission quota compared to public universities.

Owoeye said that the Nigerian university system with 152 institutions, including 69 private universities, could accommodate all qualified applicants.

He said JAMB in 2013/2014  queried many universities  over unfilled admission quotas.

“Indeed, some universities could not fill up to five per cent of their approved carrying capacity.

“ In that period, only five  out of 48 private universities filled up to 50 per cent of their approved admission quota.

“Only 27 out of 70 state government owned universities filled up to 50 per cent of their admission quota, while for the federal universities it was just 27 out of 60, ”  Owoeye said.  (NAN)

  • Ebonyi targets to harvest 350 metric tons of rice

    NAN-AE-17

    Harvest

    By Chukwuemeka Opara

Ndufu-Alike (Ebonyi) The Ebonyi Government says it anticipates bumper harvest of 350 metric tons of rice in the 2016 farming season.

Gov. David Umahi expressed the hope at the inaugural National Agricultural Summit organised by the Federal University, Ndufu-Alike, Ikwo Local Government Area of the State on Thursday.

The governor, represented by the Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Mr Uchenna Orji, said government invested massively in rice production in 2016.

“We were determined to revolutionalise rice production in the state due to our comparative advantage over other states and make it reclaim its position of highest rice producer in West Africa.

“We currently have the biggest rice mill cluster in the sub region with over 20 metric-tons capacity of rice processing facilities.

“The rice we cultivate internally is insufficient for processing in our mills and we seek rice paddy from Akwa Ibom, Cross River, among others, to meet internal and external needs”, he said.

The commissioner remarked that the government recently procured three metric tons rice milling equipment from China to boost rice production.

“We also procured 8-metric tons per hour capacity parboiling equipment, to permanently stop parboiling of rice by our farmers and processors through crude methods.’’

Umahi remarked that the government would pursue aggressive rice production in the dry season by cultivating over 54, 000 hectares from Jan. 2017.

“We have invited investors to install irrigation facilities at the farms with channelisation mechanisms from the Ebonyi River which spread across the state.

“Our one man, one hectare agricultural policy would ensure that our rice production feat is sustained with every citizen cultivating at least one hectare of farmland”, he said.

Chief Audu Ogbeh, Minister Agriculture and Rural Development, called for more funding of the agricultural sector to achieve the nation’s objectives.

Ogbeh, represented by Mr Sunday Edibo, Director of Agriculture, Lands and Climate Change Management Services, noted that the country falls short of the Maputo declaration for agricultural funding.

“It declared that every country should allocate 10 per cent of its budget to agriculture but the country is currently budgeting two per cent.

“It should be noted that agriculture can solve the nation’s unemployment problems by engaging individuals in its production value-chain of input supply, cultivation, processing, packaging, distribution, marketing, among others”, he said.

Prof. Chinedum Nwajiuba, Vice , FUNAI, said the summit was apt with the country experiencing recession occasioned by depletion of crude oil prices in the international market.

“The summit would also discuss training for the next generation of farmers and agriculturists which make us canvass for the reduction of agricultural study’s duration in universities, from five to four years”, he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that lectures were also presented by representatives of the National University Commission, Federal University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia among others.

The theme of the summit is ‘The New Face of Agricultural Training In a Declining Oil-Based Economy.’ (NAN)

Mr Sam Adurogboye, General Manager, Public Affairs, NCAA, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Thursday that the authority would take necessary action after the investigations were concluded.

Adurogboye said the investigation was with the collaboration of Arik Air and the South African Authorities.

Also, the Acting General Manager, Public Affairs of FAAN, Mrs Henrietta Yakubu, said that the authorities were yet to establish the identity of the stowaway.

Yakubu explained that information available to the authority suggested that the said body was already decomposed.

“Whatever the case, there is an investigation going on and that is why we cannot pre-empt the outcome.

“We have asked Arik to investigate to be able to determine where the stowaway boarded the flight from.

“It has not been established whether the deceased is a Nigerian or not until the investigation is over and the facts are determined,’’ she said.

Arik’s Communication Manager, Mr Ola Adebanji, said that the airline had no further information on the dead stowaway until it concluded investigation.

NAN reports that a lifeless body of a stowaway was discovered on Wednesday in the main wheel well of Arik’s A330-200 aircraft at the Oliver Tambo International Airport, Johannesburg.

It said the engineers of South African Airways Technical facility at the airport, where the aircraft was scheduled for a routine maintenance check, discovered the body of the stowaway during the inspection phase.

The airline said investigations were ongoing to determine how the stowaway found his way into the aircraft main wheel well.

It could be recalled that since 2013 till date, no fewer than four cases of stowaways were recorded in the nation’s airports. (NAN)

    NAN-S-5
    Games
Durban, Dec.1, 2016 (Reuters/NAN) South Africa remain “fully committed’’ to hosting the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Durban in spite of falling short of requirements, officials said.

But they added that they were still in talks with the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) over their bid.

The comments came on Wednesday, the deadline to resolve a number of issues, such as failing to have a local organising committee set up within 180 days of winning the bid on April 1, 2014.

And not depositing an initial payment of 1.79 million dollars.

Durban remains the only city with a confirmed bid after Edmonton in Canada withdrew in February.

While South Africa said details from ongoing talks could not be revealed, the CGF insisted that Nov. 30 was merely a deadline and not a day for announcements.

“The South African government is still fully committed on hosting the Games,’’ Esethu Hasane, spokesperson for the Department of Sport and Recreation, was quoted as saying by China’s Xinhua News Agency.

“Unfortunately, now the Department is not in a position to be making any pronouncements on ongoing talks.’’

If Durban goes on to host the event, the Commonwealth Games will travel to Africa for the first time in its history.

The 2018 Games will be held at Gold Coast, Australia. (Reuters/NAN)

  • EFCC seeks Navy’s support in fight against corruption

    NAN-DS-5
    Support
    By Yahaya Isah
Abuja, Dec. 1, 2016 (NAN) The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has sought the support of the Nigerian Navy (NN) in the fight against corruption in the country.

The Acting Chairman of the commission, Mr Ibrahim Magu, made the request when he paid a courtesy visit to the Chief of Naval Staff, (CNS), Vice Adm. Ibok-Ete Ibas, at the Naval Headquarters, Abuja.

Magu said that the visit was essentially to mobilise everybody in the fight against corruption, adding that everybody was a stakeholder in what the commission was doing.

“We are trying to bring everybody on board to join the fight against corruption.

“We also want to seek the support of the NN in our joint operations in several areas, and I am also aware that a lot is being done to ensure corruption-free Navy,’’ the acting chairman said.

According to him, corruption is everywhere and everybody must support the commission to curb the menace.

Magu also sought the support of the service in the ongoing mobilisation of Nigerian women in the war against corruption in the country.

He expressed optimism that the inter-agency collaboration would remove the gap in communication in order to ensure corruption free society.

“We understand that some people do not believe corruption is wrong or is a serious offence against the nation.

“The reception accorded us is a pointer to the fact that NN is with us in the fight against corruption,” he said.

Magu said that if the commission was able to sustain the present tempo for the next two years, the country would change definitely.

He, therefore, urged everybody to join hands with the commission in the fight against corruption.

Receiving the EFCC chairman, the CNS commended the commission for its efforts at trying to rid the country of any form of corrupt practices, especially in public organisations.

Ibas also promised to give the necessary support to the commission to enable it to succeed in its quest to tackle corruption headlong.

“The NN knows its position in the fight against corruption, as officers and men are quite aware of the consequences.

“If we are to go by the records, you will understand that we have zero tolerance for corruption.

“Our men and officers who have been found wanting in crimes that are connected to the survival of the nation have been sanctioned appropriately,” Ibas said.

He recalled that the service had also dismissed, disrated and demoted officers and men respectively for offences committed relating to crude oil theft as well as illegal bunkering.

“In other areas, the NN prides itself as a disciplined organisation and at no time tolerates any form of corruption whatsoever,” he said. (NAN)

  • NGO records 430 cases of violence against women, girls in Plateau

    NAN-HG-19
    Violence
    By Martha Agas
Jos, Dec 1, 2016 (NAN) Christian Women For Excellence and Empowerment in Nigerian Society (CWEENS), an  NGO, said it recorded 430 cases of Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) in Plateau.

The Senior Project officer of the NGO, Mrs Comfort Zawaya, said this on Thursday when a CWEENS delegation visited the Zonal Office of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Jos.

Zawaya said that in 2015 an observatory platform was set up by the National Stability and Reconciliation Programme (NSRP) facilitated by CWEENS to collate reports, make referrals and respond to gender issues in Plateau.

“The Observatory Steering Committee made up of more than 23 stakeholders of state and non state actors recorded a number of 430 cases.

“123 were cases of rape of which 80 per cent were minors,’’ she said.

She attributed the violence to the lack of firm laws to prosecute perpetrators of such acts.

The official said the NGO’s visit to NAN was to enable it to use its platform to report cases “to ensure justice is served to perpetrators, which would serve as deterrent to anyone who may want to indulge in such evil act’’.

According to her, the organisation also has a safe home for women and girls battered, raped or bedevilled by harmful widowhood practices.

She said the NGO would like to work closely with NAN, a credible source for news, to report all forms of violence against women and girls.

Zawaya stated that as the world marks World AIDS Day, children should also be enlightened on preventive measures against the virus.

In his remarks, Mr Ephraims Sheyin, the Zonal Manager of NAN in Jos, stated that the agency is involved in social responsibility activities through partnerships with individuals and organisations.

Sheyin, who was represented by Mr Emmanuel Nwoye, an Assistant Editor-in-Chief, advised the organisation to be fervent in inculcating moral values in children to prevent such violent tendencies.

NAN reports that the organisation conducts HIV Test and other medical checks for women and girls and makes referrals where necessary. (NAN)
