  • Physician calls for ban on ‘nylon water’ sale

    Water

    By Oluwafunke Ishola

Lagos, June 27, 2024 (NAN) A General Physician, Dr Tunji Akintade, has called for a ban on sale of ‘nylon water’ to reduce the transmission of cholera disease in the country.

Akintade, former Chairman of the Association of Nigerian Private Medical Practitioners (ANPMP), said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Lagos.

NAN reports that due to the biting economic situation and the increased price of sachet water, some street traders emerged with the sale of nylon water as a cost-cutting measure for the public.

Sachet water, popularly known as “pure water”, is being sold at N50 in most parts of Lagos, while nylon water is sold for N10 or N20, depending on the location.

Akintade appealed to the Federal Government to urgently restrict the sale of nylon water to reduce the transmission and deaths arising from cholera outbreak nationwide.

The physician warned the public against consuming nylon water, stressing that the source and purification of such water was in doubt, especially as they are unregistered.

He disclosed that past tests had confirmed the contamination of some boreholes and well water by pathogens, emphasising that nylon water was unsafe for consumption.

“People can get cholera by drinking unsafe water or eating food contaminated with cholera bacteria.

“It’s so sad that people neglect their health because of financial concerns and some unscrupulous traders are cashing on it,” he said.

Akintade appealed to the government to intensify surveillance across communities and attach punitive measures for traders of nylon water toward safeguarding the health of citizens.

The physician also called for effective monitoring and regulations of pure water and bottled water factories to ensure they adhere to safety standards in their production.

He lamented the perennial cholera outbreak in the country, noting that cholera had ceased to be public health concerns in industrialised countries that deployed modern sewage and water treatment.

Akintade urged the Federal and state governments to move beyond alerting the public about the unsafe conditions of the water source to expediting actions to improve access to clean and safe water through functional water boards.

The physician stressed that doing that would mitigate the health risk associated with consumption of unsafe water, especially as rain and flooding are causing waterborne diseases in communities.

He added that ingesting contaminated food could also cause cholera, advising the public to ensure vegetables and fruits are properly washed before eating and food produced in an hygienic environment.

Akintade stressed the equipping of environmental inspection officers with improved training and equipment required to effectively monitor and clean the environment.

“The issue of revenue generation through them should be downplayed for them to achieve their core mandates, focusing on ways to generate money has trivialised their role,” he told NAN.

Cholera is an acute diarrhoeal infection caused by eating or drinking food or water that is contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) on June 24 disclosed that 53 deaths and 1,528 suspected cholera cases were recorded across 31 states, since the beginning of 2024.

Lagos state is the epicentre of the cholera outbreak with 29 fatalities, 579 suspected cases and 43 laboratory confirmed cases across multiple Local Government Areas in the state. (NAN) www.nannews.ng

3 injured as farmers, herders clash in Jigawa

    Clash

    By Muhammad Nasir Bashir

Dutse, June 27, 2024 (NAN) Three persons were confirmed injured when farmers and herders clashed around Baranda forest in Kiyawa Local Government Area of Jigawa, the state Police Command confirmed on Thursday.

“We received the information about the incident on Tuesday, at about 2:15 pm,” DSP Lawal Shiisu, the Police Public Relations Officer(PPRO), said in a statement.

“On receipt of the report, the Divisional Police Officer of Kiyawa Division, alongside his patrol team, rushed to the scene.

The team included Kiyawa Local Government officials, Chairmen of Kautal Hore and Miyetti Allah, Association of Farmers of Nigeria (AFAN), and Village Heads of the four affected communities.

“While dialogue was ongoing among the critical stakeholders, the Police team seized the opportunity to identify three injured victims and rescued six others who were about to be attacked,” he said.

The PPRO added that the victims were rushed to the hospital where they were treated and discharged.

According to him, no arrest was made in connection with the incident in order to avoid further chaos.

Shiisu, however, said that two of the leaders of the herders were identified and would be invited by the Police.

He said preliminary investigation had revealed that the herders acted on a misleading information which suggested that the state government had revoked farmlands within the forest reserve that were allocated for farming activities.

The PPRO stated that normalcy had been restored in the affected villages, while patrol had been intensified to avert further breach of peace.

NAN recalls that on May 27, five farmers were injured in a similar incident at Hayin Kogi forest in Birnin-Kudu Local Government Area. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

  • Why undergraduates need to think space – Foundation

Why undergraduates need to think space – Foundation

    Space

    By Ijeoma Olorunfemi

Abuja, June 27, 2024 (NAN) Learnspace Foundation, an NGO, on Thursday, encouraged students to develop interest in space, saying that it appears abstract but has diverse opportunities.

Dr Anne Agi, President of the foundation, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), said that everything about human existence revolved around space science technology.

“Most people think that space is abstract and it doesn’t affect our country, but technically, that is not true, space is everything, space is bigger than what we think.

“The private sector is really engaging and the possibilities are endless, what you need to do is to equip yourself because the opportunities will come.

“You need to understand that times are changing, this is the time to get interested,’’ she said.

Agi, also a Space Law lecturer at the University of Calabar, Cross River, said that most thoughts about space science technology were at some point speculations until proven to be true.

The foundation’s president added that the globe was continuously engaging in writing papers, making arguments, having conferences, seminars, all to understand space science.

”The more we rub minds, go for mute courts competitions, the benefits will come.

“I am going to encourage anyone that is remotely interested in space to actively get interested.

“Since I got into space there has never been a down time and the opportunities keep opening, in spite of the non availability of funds,’’ she said.

Agi recognised that few Nigerian universities offered courses around space science technology like Space Law, Astronomy, Space Engineering, adding that interested students shouldn’t be discouraged.

She further said that the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC), had given universities a certain percentage to grant courses that impacted their communities, hence Space law in UNICAL.

“NUC just adopted a new pattern of curriculum for universities where a certain percentage are the recommended courses and 35 per cent is for the university.

“Whatever courses the university wants to do within that 35 per cent impact in their community is left for them.

“NUC has given universities that leeway, it is left for the universities to recognise that it is a viable branch of law and undertake it under their elective courses,’’ she said.

Agi added that the Learnspace foundation was committed to propagating space education, engaging relevant stakeholders to promote space activities in the country and globally.

She said that the major challenge towards understanding space among the people, was poor awareness, but they were advancing in creating the awareness, in spite of paucity of funds.

Agi said, “We have raised an entire generation of students who are very interested in space and knowledge because they went for space law competitions.

“We are still contending with the disbelief of people but we are doing our best.’’ (NAN)www.nannews.ng

German Foreign Office calls on Germans to leave Lebanon

    Germans

Berlin, June 27, 2024 (dpa/NAN) The German Foreign Office in Berlin on Thursday called on all Germans in Lebanon to leave the country, due to the very tense situation on the border between Israel and Lebanon.

A further escalation could also lead to air traffic from Rafic Hariri Airport in Beirut being completely suspended, according to new travel and security advice posted by the ministry on X.

“It would then no longer be possible to leave Lebanon by air.’’

The security situation in the region is highly volatile; the military clashes in the border area between Lebanon and Israel have increased in intensity in recent weeks.

“After the Palestinian Hamas launched a major attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, Hezbollah and other armed groups have also been firing mortar shells, anti-tank weapons and rockets at Israel from Lebanese territory since October 8, 2023.

“Accordingly, a further escalation of the situation and expansion of the conflict cannot be ruled out.

“This applies in particular to the southern parts of Lebanon up to and including the southern urban areas of Beirut and the Bekaa Plain, including the Baalbek-Hermel district,” the travel and security advice stated.

The Foreign Office had already called on German citizens and their relatives to leave the country a few days after the Hamas attack on Israel prompted the Gaza war in October. (dpa/NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
