Hajj: Lagos wants NAHCON address challenges ahead of 2025 pilgrimage

    Hajj

    By Aderonke Ojediran

Lagos, June 27, 2024 (NAN) Lagos State Commissioner for Home Affairs, Mr Ibrahim Layode, has called on the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) to meet with stakeholders to find solutions to pilgrims’ challenges.

Layode made the call during a press conference  in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, according to a statement by an Assistant Director of Public Affairs, Lagos State Welfare Pilgrims Board, Mr Taofeek Lawal.

The commissioner said that most of the challenges encountered during 2024 Hajj were from  inadequacies of the commission.

He said that the South West  was not pleased with food service at Mina as well as accommodation provided in Makkah.

“We had a lot of challenges, and most of them are from NAHCON.

“The caterer selected to provide meals for the state’s pilgrims was using his own discretion to select menu that was not favourable to the people of the South West.

“Pilgrims almost protested at Mina, and many of them rejected the meals served and chose to go and buy food from vendors.

“Even the accommodation provided for Lagos pilgrims in Makkah was not up to standards,” he said.

The official said that NAHCON admitted that there were challenges during the Hajj.

He, however, said that in spite of the challenges, ‘you can’t throw away the baby with the bath water’.

The commissioner  called on stakeholders to join hands with NAHCON to address the challenges  ahead of 2025 Hajj.

He thanked pilgrims from Lagos State for patience and praised  the state  Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu,  and his Deputy, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, for huge support.

He said that the state government provided the shortfall of the Basic Travel Allowance to the pilgrims and offset the cost of rams, amongst other kind gestures.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that no fewer than 926 of 1,869 Muslim pilgrims from Lagos State  have so far returned from the 2024 Hajj. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

    By Aisha Cole

Lagos, June 27, 2024 (NAN) The Lagos Free Trade Zone of the Nigeria Customs Service says it generated N115 billion in revenue over the past six months.

Its Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Olanrewaju Olumoh, disclosed this at a stakeholder engagement in the Free Trade Zone in Lagos on Thursday.

Olumoh expressed optimism that the command would meet and surpass its annual target by the end of the year.

He said, “The fallout from these visits necessitated the meeting today where we shall reveal our achievements so far and discuss matters that will improve operations in the Free Trade Zones under the Command.

“The initial revenue target given to the Free Trade Zone was N108.84 billion before it was reviewed to N136.05 billion for 2024.

“From January 2024 till date, the command has generated N41.3 billion from the Free Trade Zone, compared to N24.7 billion collected during the same period in 2023.

This shows an increase of N16.6 billion, representing a 67per centt rise over 2023.”

For Lekki Port, an initial revenue target of N6.61 billion was reviewed to N8.26 billion. From January to date, N74.67 billion was generated as revenue from the port.

Olumoh explained the fundamental benefits of establishing Free Trade Zones to include attracting foreign investments, promoting technology transfer, and creating job opportunities.

He stressed the importance of stakeholder collaboration in achieving these goals.

“It is important to keep sensitising agents and zone operators on the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for Free Zones to enhance their compliance level and improve their capacity towards better service delivery,” Olumoh noted.

He emphasised that stakeholder engagement is about building relationships based on trust, transparency, and mutual understanding.

“We want to operate an open-door policy where we can entertain meaningful contributions to move the Command forward,” he said.

Olumoh commended the Zone management and other agencies, including the Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority (NEPZA), Immigration and the Nigeria Police Force, for their continuous support in achieving these results.

He also recognised the critical role of the media in public sensitisation and enlightenment about Free Zones.

Mrs Oladunni Kareem, General Manager of Operations at Lekki Free Trade Zone, commended the NCS for the interactive session.

She emphasised the need for operators to be aware of customs procedures to reduce the time of doing business.

“We want trade facilitation and the Nigeria Customs Service is doing all it can towards that. Revenue collection for the government cannot be overemphasised; we have to operate side by side,” Kareem said.

She assured of continued collaboration with NCS to improve Nigeria’s trade environment.

Kareem noted that trade facilitation would encourage investors and help introduce the free trade zone to other investors, thereby creating more jobs for the youth. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

  • Oyo NAWOJ sensitises market food vendors on cholera

    Cholera

    By Oluwaseyi Oduneye-Ogunwomoju

Ibadan, June 27, 2024 (NAN) The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Oyo State Chapter, on Thursday visited some food markets in Ibadan to sensitise vendors on Cholera and how to prevent its spread.

NAWOJ Chairperson in the state, Omolola Alamu, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the association needed to collaborate with the state government to check the outbreak.

“NAWOJ is campaigning against the spread of cholera because we don’t want the people of Oyo State to contract cholera and, thereby, spread it in the state,” she said

Alamu said the association went around to educate food vendors on the importance of maintaining good personal hygiene.

“We need a clean environment; we must ensure that food cooked for public consumption is done in a good environment and with clean water,” she said.

According to the chairperson, proactive steps are needed to ensure Ibadan residents are aware of cholera, going by the town’s proximity to Lagos, a state with high records of victims.

“There’s a need for urgent and proactive steps to ensure that everyone is aware of cholera; knowing what to do and what not to do.

“We picked food markets because many of the citizens buy cooked food to eat daily, and this is one of the fastest ways to contract cholera.

“We are educating food vendors to ensure that what they are selling is made with clean water and in a healthy environment,” she said.

Meanwhile, Dupe Fehintola, Chairperson, Nigeria Union of Journalists, Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS) Chapel, said it was pivotal to educate the public on preventive measures against cholera.

According to her, “Prevention is better than cure.”

Fehintola said she was surprised that some of the market men and women were not aware of the cholera outbreak in the nation.

“We met people eating under unhygienic conditions, but we educated them.

“We saw children picking things on the ground, but parents are ignorant that at this period in time, one needs to be very careful.

“We, however, encouraged the children to constantly wash their hands with soap and water after playing around,” she said.

She added that at the Okirika market, two women said they had taken it upon themselves for a while now to educate their colleagues on the importance of proper hygiene.

“The market men and women are now getting more informed about cholera as we furnished them with more information in a one-on-one talk,” she said.

  • AI transforms poultry farming in China’s mountainous village

AI transforms poultry farming in China’s mountainous village

    Farm

Guiyang (China), June 27, 2024 (Xinhua/NAN) In a remarkable advancement in China’s technology sector, consumers of Chishui Silkie chickens will soon be able to monitor the process of fostering chickens using Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The one ultimately destined for their dinner table is fed and raised on remote farms, all from their mobile phones.

Xu Qiyong, owner of a chicken farm in Tiantaishan Village in Chishui City in southwest China’s Guizhou Province, has conceived a new application based on an AI-based smart breeding system.

The technology, developed by Tencent Cloud and students of the Tencent Class of Shenzhen University a programme launched by the university and tech giant Tencent has been installed on Xu’s farm.

This has spanned 256 sheds spread across 1,000 mu (about 66.67 hectares) of bamboo-covered hillside.

Managing flocks of free-roaming chickens across such a vast farm came as a challenge for breeders, with predators like wild dogs posing a threat.

Occasionally, infections have potentially led to massive outbreaks before they could be detected.

The AI-based system has transformed the poultry farm in terms of mitigating disease outbreaks.

It helped keep the chickens safe from attacks by wild animals and boosted the share of chickens finally delivered to butcher houses by about 30 per cent.

In Xu’s farm, every chicken has a chip affixed to its leg which serves as a pedometer, detecting early signs of disease by identifying inactive chickens.

The chicken farm is also equipped with surveillance sensors that continuously monitor intrusions by wild dogs or breaches in the fence in real time, Xu explained.

He noted that he had planned to launch the “foster chicken’’ application in July.

Chishui boasts a long history of breeding black-feathered and black-boned Silkie chickens, prized for their amino acid-rich meat and eggs, which were increasingly sought after by health-conscious consumers.

Xu, a seasoned media professional, quit his job at the end of 2022 and leased the chicken farm to start his own business.

His confidence in the industry was reinforced by Chishui a city home to one million mu of bamboo forests is committed to developing a non-timber forest-based economy.

Xu reached out to Tencent for potential cooperation after learning about AI-enabled goose breeding carried out by the same team in Shenzhen, leading to a successful partnership deal.

Since implementing AI technology on his farm last year, Xu has sold around 100,000 Silkie chickens and 300,000 eggs.

The AI-powered Silkie chicken breeding project has even garnered attention from outside China, as the developer team has received inquiries from research institutes in Pakistan and ranchers in Australia.

This is according to Feng Yuhong of the College of Computer Science and Software Engineering, Shenzhen University.

At the moment, the Tencent Cloud and students of the Tencent Class of Shenzhen University, in partnership with Guizhou University and other institutes, are developing a large language model for poultry breeding.

It includes a question-and-answer database based on a large language model that can assist breeders in navigating through various challenges.

Feng said the team also plans to enact an industry-wide standard for digitalised and intelligent breeding of poultry based on the large language model which can help expand the market reach for more poultry breeds like the Silkie chickens in Chishui. (Xinhua/NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

  • Why military should exploit artificial intelligence for operational efficiency – CNS

Why military should exploit artificial intelligence for operational efficiency – CNS

    Operations

    By Sumaila Ogbaje

Abuja, June 27, 2024 (NAN) The Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Adm. Emmanuel Ogalla, has called for the Armed Forces of Nigeria to exploit the potentials of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to achieve operational efficiency in their operations.

Ogalla made the call at the Second Quarter 2024 Defence Headquarters and Services Departments/Branches Transformation Seminar, hosted by the Nigerian Navy, on Thursday in Abuja.

The theme of the seminar was “Harnessing Artificial Intelligence as a Transformation Tool in Contemporary Military Operations”.

According to him, the seminar came at a time the armed forces was exploiting transformational and innovative initiatives towards enhancing operational efficiency in line with best practices.

Ogalla said the complexity of security challenges across the nation underscored the need for innovative strategies and initiatives, adding that emphasis had been on modernisation of hardware and equipment for enhanced national security.

He said the technological innovations required extensive application of artificial intelligence in conjunction with research and development.

“We are cautious of the fact that the application of artificial intelligence has permitted all spheres of human endeavor, particularly in the field of finance, medical, space, technology, agriculture, logistics, among several other areas.

“It is in fact the future of military operations and we must, therefore, ensure that the Armed Forces of Nigeria meets up with this evolving technological achievement.

“Our armed forces must, therefore, prioritise artificial intelligence in order to achieve the desired innovation and transformation for enhanced operational readiness and effectiveness.

“This is the desired goal which you, as leaders of the transformation branch of the various services, must work to actualise.

“I therefore encourage us to use these two days to brainstorm on critical issues and challenges in inherent in the application of artificial intelligence for improved operational efficiency.

“This is because everything that has advantages must have some disadvantages.

“So as much as we want to exploit the advantages of AI, we must also be able to surmount those inherent challenges and disadvantages that could arise from them,” he said.

The Chief of Naval Transformation and Innovation, Rear Adm. Michael Oamen, said the seminar was specially designed to explore viable options for integrating artificial intelligence as a veritable tool for improving operational effectiveness in the armed forces.

Oamen said it was aimed at identifying and encouraging innovations, as well as research and development with a view to building capacity and capabilities of the armed forces in support of national security imperatives.

According to him, the second quarter’s seminar has been programmed for two days to cover topics on artificial intelligence in defence transformation, a potential tool for enhancing operational efficiency in the armed forces.

He added that the second paper would be leveraging artificial intelligence for enhanced research and development towards transforming military operations lessons for the emphasis of Nigeria.

“It is hoped that proceedings from this seminar will serve as a veritable platform for charting workable strategies.

“This will improve the integration of artificial intelligent defence research and development, as well as drive transformational and innovative aspirations in the services,” he added. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Vatican to be supplied with solar energy in future, pope decides

    Solar

Rome, June 27, 2024 (dpa/NAN) The Vatican is to be supplied entirely with solar power in future after Pope Francis ordered the construction of agrivoltaic plant on a site north of Rome that is controlled by the Vatican.

The plant in Santa Maria di Galeria is intended to supply not only the Vatican Radio broadcasting centre there with electricity but also the entire Vatican.

The pope wrote in a letter entitled “Brother Sun’’ dated Wednesday.

“There must be a transition towards a sustainable development model that reduces the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, to achieve climate neutrality,’’ a letter signed by Francis indicated.

Humanity has the technological means to manage this ecological change and its harmful social, economic, and political consequences: Solar energy has a key role in this, he added.

With the construction of the plant, the pope set to contribute to the efforts of all states to find an appropriate response to climate change by their respective responsibilities and capabilities.

It initially remained unclear when exactly the agrivoltaic system in Santa Maria di Galeria would be installed and go into operation.

Pope Francis attaches great importance to environmental protection.

In the spirit of his environmental encyclical “Laudato Si (Praised Be) from 2015 and his apostolic letter Laudate Deum’’ (Praise God) from 2023, the Vatican wants to become climate neutral.

Last year, for example, Francis decided to completely replace the Vatican’s vehicle fleet with electric cars by 2030. (dpa/NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

  • Ogundoyin douses tension in Oyo Assembly, says no lawmaker ‘ll be suspended

    Suspension
    By Oluwaseyi Oduneye-Ogunwomoju
Ibadan, June 27, 2024 (NAN) Speaker of Oyo State House Of Assembly, Adebo Ogundoyin, on Thursday, said that no lawmaker would be suspended over allegation of working against the leadership of the assembly.

Ogundoyin stated this on Thursday while addressing the House at the plenary.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that tension had been brewing in the assembly over alleged plan to suspend 11 members by the speaker.

NAN also reports that all the 11 lawmakers, who are first-timers in the assembly, consist of seven from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and four from the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC).

The affected legislators were said to have previously reported the speaker to Gov. Seyi Makinde through a petition written under the aegis of Unity Forum.

The petition dwelled on allegations of sidelining them by the speaker in the affairs of the assembly and management of Eid-el Kabir gifts from the governor, among others.

However, Ogundoyin, while speaking at the plenary on Thursday, said that suspending any member would only create a vacuum that would make the electorate and the constituents to suffer.

He stressed the need for the lawmakers to prioritise the needs of their constituents above their own personal interests.

“It has come to my attention that we have concluded plans to suspend the so-called erring members of the 10th Oyo State House of Assembly. I want to assure you that this is not true.

“We were elected to serve our constituents, and we must prioritise their needs above our personal interests.

“Suspending any member will only create a vacuum that will make the electorate to suffer and we cannot allow that to happen,” he said.

Ogundoyin said that the false news and rumors being peddled in the last few days by some members under whatever guise or group were capable of creating unnecessary tension and causing avoidable conflicts.

“I stand before you today to address the events of the past week or so, which have been marked by unnecessary tension and division.

“Some members have chosen to portray themselves as unity or dissident group and, in doing so, have created a seemingly toxic atmosphere in this house.

“Their actions have put us in bad light and have presented the so-called aggrieved members as being out of touch with the priorities of our constituents.

“Let me remind you all that we have come to this house to do is to serve and represent our people, not to pursue personal interests or agenda.

“We have a sacred responsibility to work together for the betterment of Oyo state and its citizens. We must not allow petty squabbles and selfish ambitions to derail us from our noble mission,” he said.

The speaker urged the lawmakers to avoid sponsoring false news and casting aspersions on the leadership of the assembly.

“We must work together and avoid bickering and unfounded rumours.

“This house will not be distracted from its constitutional responsibilities and duties,” he said.

The speaker, who described the media as a powerful tool, either for good or bad, said that members of the assembly should not to use it to spread falsehood or fuel division.

“Instead, let us use it to inform, educate and enlighten our constituents on the good work that we are doing.

“We need to focus on the task at hand and work in unison to deliver on our promises to the people of Oyo state.

“We cannot allow personal interests to derail us from our duties. It is not business as usual, and we must rise above petty politics to serve our constituents with integrity and dedication.

“Let us put our constituents first and work together to build a better Oyo state for all,” he said.

Ogundoyin appealed to his colleagues to be mindful of the sensitivity of their words and actions.

“We must be aware of the impact our statements can have on our colleagues, on our constituents and on the stability of this house.

“We must work together, even in the face of disagreement, in order to achieve greater things.

“Let me say here that no member or members will be victimised or deprived of their rights and entitlements as duly elected members of this honourable assembly,” he said.

The speaker also called for harmony and collaboration between the legislature and other arms of government.

“Let us avoid issues that could pitch the executive against the legislature and be wary of the antics of external influences whose major aim is to cause disunity and distabilise the house,” he said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
