Entrepreneur lauds Otti, Uzodinma over performance in office

    Performance

    By Aderogba George
Abuja, June 5, 2024 (NAN) Mr Ikenna Okoro, an Abuja-based Real Estate entrepreneur has commended governors of Imo, Abia, Cross River and FCT Minister for providing quality infrastructure and good governance for their people.

Okoro made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Wednesday on his assessment of Nigeria’s democratic trajectory in the past one year.

He described Mr Nyesom Wike as an exceptional Minister of FCT in comparison with his predecessors.

“Wike is doing excellently well as far as infrastructure is concerned. Anybody living in Abuja will see the massive transformation he is doing within one year”, he said.

The businessman also commended governors of Hope Uzodinma of Imo, Alex Otti of Abia and Cross River’s, Bassey Otu for their transformational leadership styles in their states.

“Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodinma is doing exceptionally well. The massive infrastructure development he has embarked on in Imo is not something I need to tell you, it’s something you need to see.

“It is everywhere, massive roads, quality roads. The next move he is making now is about uninterrupted power supply, I wish him well.

“He is doing well because the areas of civil service and human empowerment he is not wasting the state fund on parties and friends’’, he told NAN.

He described Otti as a blessing to the people of Abia.

“I commend a couple of other governors who have a blueprint of good things on paper.

“Some of them inherited a very bad state, may be they are in a hole, need to fill the hole, may be you need to give them time’’, Okoro said.

Okoro also threw his weight behind the call for true local governments autonomy saying it would strengthen the nation’s democracy and deliver dividends of democracy to the grassroots.

He said that autonomy for local governments would engender economic stability at the grassroots.

He also supported the agitation for state police and community policing saying “it is one of the things that I believe that will move our economy forward.

“Mr President said local government is the key of our security architecture because you might post Commissioner of Police from Sokoto to, say, Abia.

“He may not perform optimally because he doesn’t know anybody, he doesn’t know the terrain and doesn’t know the culture

“But if you bring in an Abia indigene and make him Commissioner of Police of Abia, he knows his kinsmen, he knows the bad boys and he will tell them don’t try that none sense here,” he said.

Okoro urged governor to support the clamour and implementation of local government autonomy for a prosperous Nigeria.

He also urged reforms in the country’s electoral process, saying it could lead to the recruitment of quality leaders.

“Late President Yar’adua admitted that the process that brought him into office was flawed

“I want this administration to look at the electoral process to ensure that credible people will be elected into office’’, he said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Assessing 2024-2027 Education Roadmap one year after

A News Analysis by Funmilayo Adeyemi, News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)

    Tinubu: My mission as President

President Bola Tinubu on assumption into office on May 29, 2023 reiterated the commitment of his administration to education for human capital development in the country.

Tinubu gave approval for a comprehensive set of policies aimed at overhauling Nigeria’s education sector which focused on four initiatives — Data Repository, Out-of-School Children, Teacher Training and Development and Skill Development and Acquisition.

Educationists have recalled that as laudable as the roadmap suggests, the number of out-of-school children is currently a subject of controversy.

The United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) and the United Nations Education and Scientific Organisation (UNESCO) put the figure at 18.5 million and 20 million respectively but the government insists the figure is less.

Irrespective of the controversy, Tinubu urged the Federal Ministry of Education and all stakeholders in the sector to work together to see this vision accomplished.

The ministry began by developing a 2024-2027 Education Roadmap as well as the Ministerial Deliverables entitled “Education for Renewed Hope’’.

The roadmap contains practical, problem-solving and realistic approaches across 13 thematic areas delineated to allow for concurrent implementation as parts of a synergistic whole.

The roadmap underpins the ministerial deliverables, a compact signed between the management of the Federal Ministry of Education and the president for which the education ministry would be held accountable.

The roadmap being developed has heavy concentration on the need to have out-of-school children reduced, with the target of increasing school enrolment, transition and completion for learners.

The ministry, through the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) project, currently running in 18 states, has enrolled more than three million girls in secondary education.

Also, through the project, more than 5,000 classrooms have been constructed with 84,567 teaching and learning materials provided to schools in the beneficiary states.

Speaking in an interview, the National Project Coordinator of AGILE, Mrs Amina Haruna, said that AGILE, a World Bank assisted project, was aimed at improving secondary education opportunities for adolescent girls in 18 participating states.

Haruna said that the project had also benefitted millions of students with life skills and digital skills.

According to her, this project is aligned with the major focus of the ministry at the moment which is to strengthen education at the basic and secondary education level.

She said that the project had not only brought academic programmes to the students but also included hands on skills to make the students self-reliant.

“The boys are not left out as they also benefit from this project through our visibility in the mixed schools.

“The only thing the boys are not enjoying in this project is the cash incentives, any other thing is enjoyed by both the boys and girls,’’ she said.

Haruna said that the project had the components for looking at the challenges students faced in going to school such as proximity, WASH facilities and environment conducive for quality learning and teaching and also acquiring skills.

“From all the components, we started with renovations, and we worked on what would give a good shape to the school and by the time girls start enrolling, they are fully accommodated.

“Then, we look at infrastructure, bringing enough facilities that the children can use and also for their teachers.

“A communication campaign is also provided to enlighten and talk to the parents, traditional rulers about the importance of education.

“We are also looking at a session where we can teach them how to build their confidence and talk to them about the reproductive system so that they can understand what they should expect when they are growing up,’’ she said.

She added that the project had provided the students with digital literacy and conditional cash transfer as a financial incentives given to beneficiaries and their caregivers to support their education.

“During this mission, we have touched the lives of 3,143,497 people; we also have 1,664,170 girls benefiting from the direct intervention of this project.

“We have 1,155,469 girls enrolled in junior and senior secondary school. There’s also a 69 per cent completion rate in senior secondary school.

“We have renovated more than 5,238 junior secondary classrooms and 6,134 classrooms have been renovated for the senior secondary school.

“There are more than 537 separate toilet facilities made for girls in senior secondary schools. In over all, we have touched about 13,663,478 community members,’’ Haruna said.

She further said more than 568 schools were running digital literacy programmes, noting that a new component of the project called second chance had been introduced.

According to her, each of the states has identified centres where each girl can have literacy and skills so that they will be independent and also contribute to the economy of the country.

The national coordinator explained that with the success stories of the project, the number of out-of-school children would be reduced drastically by the end of this administration.

Corroborating this, the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman at a retreat on implementation of Ministerial Deliverables of the Education for Renewed Hope held in Akwa Ibom, emphasised the need to reduce the out-of-school number.

Mamman said there was need to develop the teacher’s skills that would strengthen and prepare them to teach the children the identified skills needed for the 21st Century knowledge-driven economy.

“Suffice it to say that it is an embarrassment that Nigeria is continually associated with the highest number of out-of-school children in the world.

“I would not want to bother you with the number of out-of-school children in the country. We would be paying particular attention to this unacceptable phenomenon.

“And in line with President Bola Tinubu’s commitment, we will work towards returning 15 million out-of-school children back to the classrooms by the year 2027.

“We will re-invigorate our focus on basic education, including ensuring the harmonisation and coordination of resources and activities among all tiers of government and development partners.

“We have, therefore, begun operationalising the establishment of the National Commission for Almajiri and Out-of-School Children and approved a policy on Early Child Care Development Education.

“We have begun engagement with state governments on removing bottlenecks that negatively impacted their ability to optimally utilise the Universal Basic Education Funds,’’ he said.

Mamman said that the state governments would fulfill jointly agreed counterpart obligations on efficient programme execution and achievement of results.

He said that a national policy on senior secondary and re-entry guidelines for adolescent girls who dropped out of school prematurely had also been developed and adopted.

He said tht the policy was to advance the government’s interventions of returning more Nigerian children back to school.

“To do this, we are placing a high premium on foundational and basic education and strengthening integration of existing non-formal schools into formal education systems.

“We are scaling-up adult literacy and non-formal education interventions, increasing opportunities for girl-child education and forging partnerships with all tiers of government as well as our development partners,’’ he said.

The Federal Government has also put in place upgrading of schools across the country with the aim of providing environment conducive for learning and teaching.

The Executive Secretary, National Senior Secondary Education Commission, Dr Iyela Ajayi, said that the upgrading of 50 selected senior secondary schools across the country had begun.

Ajayi explained that federal government colleges are now undergoing renovations in order to give the schools a face lift.

He added that President Bola Tinubu placed high priority in the development of the education sector, hence evident in the budget allocation to the sector in the 2024 Appropriation Act.

“Upgrade of the 50 selected senior secondary schools across the nation, which was captured in the 2024 budget, is a clear testimony of this administration’s commitment to the development of senior secondary education on the country,’’ he said.

In furtherance to this and in a renewed move to enhance sustainable growth in education, the Federal Government has also concluded plans to embark on 13 new infrastructure projects at the National Mass Literacy and Adult Education Commission (NMEC), Kano Centre, through Public/Private Partnership.

The Minister of State for Education, Dr Yusuf Sununu, noted that this was to kick-start the proposed land-swap deal for the development of critical infrastructure in Kano.

According to him, the public private partnership project would mark a turning point in literacy education of adults across the country.

He regretted that it was unfortunate that Nigeria still had a significant number of adults who are either illiterate or have limited literacy skills.

“This is another milestone as a progress in the ministry where we are having it with private public partnership and this is also in the eight point agenda of the President Bola Tinubu, ’’ he said.

The minister said that the 13 new infrastructure projects would include semi-detached two and three bedroom bungalows, state-of-the-art classrooms, clinic, library, hostels, a lecture theatre and recreational facilities, among others that were hitherto lacking.

It is obvious that the government is not resting on its oars to take the education sector out of the woods with all these laudable policies.

Needless to say that with proper implementation, all these measures and policies put in place; the country will be on its way to belong to the committee of nations that boast of zero out-of-school children with a well-trained, skilled and equipped teaching staff members.(NANFeatures)(www.nannews.ng)

    By Maureen Okon

Abuja, June 5, 2024 (NAN) The Italian Embassy in Nigeria on Wednesday in Abuja celebrated the rich cultural heritage of the Yoruba through a collage of artworks with the theme – `human and spiritual wealth of Yorubas”.

The celebration involved a solo exhibition of artworks of prominent Italian artist,  Mr Luigi Ballarin.

The Italian Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Stefano De Leo speaking at the solo art exhibition, said art collection was a tribute to the over 40 million Yoruba-speaking people in West Africa.

De Leo said that Ballarin’s artworks had captivated audiences around the world.

“Today, it was a privilege to have his exhibition celebrating the Yoruba culture of Nigeria.

“His passion for exploring the intricacies of different cultures is evident in his work, reflecting a deep respect for tradition and a profound understanding of the human experience.

“In doing that, Ballarin has taken profound inspiration from the rich tapestry of traditions and artistry that define this vibrant community.

“Through his art, he has sought to capture the essence of the Yoruba people, their history, and their enduring legacy of creativity and spirituality.

“With a keen eye for detail and a deep appreciation for the beauty of the world around him, Ballarin invites us to join him on a journey of discovery and enlightenment, ‘’he said.

Also speaking, Ballarin said that the Yoruba people were one of the largest in West Africa, adding that, over the centuries they had developed a refined culture.

“This is why the title of the exhibition is called the human and spiritual wealth of the Yoruba people.

“One of the most characteristically masks and headdresses, together with ritual costumes.

“Within each Yoruba community, art occupies a prominent place and a distinct artist tradition that remains vital and influential even in the current era.

“I think immersing myself in such a different and complex culture is incredibly constructive, fascinating, and stimulating, ” he said.

According to the artist,  preparing for this exhibition,  I felt pushed into a dreamlike dimension because Nigeria is full of prodigious stories.

He also referred to a recent book titled; “African Venice in Italy”, adding that it was the first guide that spoke about the African presence in the Venetian city of yesterday and today.

“There are about 20 essays, poems, and reflections that enrich the narratives of the African past and present of Venice.

“Therefore, art and writing can act as a bridge which unites people and continents.

“How do you explain Africa to those who judge it without ever having to caress this red and dusty land with their own hands? He queried.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Yoruba language is spoken in the Western African countries of Nigeria, Benin Republic, parts of Togo, and Sierra Leone.

It, therefore, constitutes one of the largest single languages in sub-Sahara Africa.

NAN recalls that Ballarin did a similar art exhibition in July 2023 titled ” Colours of Noble Cultures’’ of the Northern part of Nigeria, precisely depicting the Kano Durbar. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

  • Climate change: NGO establishes ‘Eco Heroes club’ in Abuja school

    Climate

    By Funmilayo Adeyemi

Abuja, June 5, 2024 (NAN) The Ecolife Conservative Initiative, an NGO, has established an ‘Eco Heroes Club’ at the VineCare Schools, Abuja, to mitigate the effect of climate change.

The Executive Director of the initiative, Mr Chibuzor Akubuike, spoke during the event in commemoration of the World Environment Day on Wednesday in Abuja.

He said the club was necessary to train children how to protect their environment.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the World Environment Day is celebrated every year on June 5 annually, with the aim of raising awareness on the need to fight global warming and climate change.

The 2024 theme is tagged “Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience.’’

According to Akubuike, the club will take up the ‘zero litter campaign’, presently at the VineCare Schools to other schools in Abuja and across the country.

“The campaign is aimed at building an army of students that will be aware of the need to take care of the environment to mitigate the effect of climate change,’’ he said.

Also, the Head of Basic School, VineCare Schools, Mr Taiwo Odanaogun, said the hands-on experiences received by the students played significant role in preserving the country’s natural resources.

Odanaogun said that all hands must be on deck especially educators, to instill in the young minds the values of environmental stewardship and sustainable living.

“Our ‘Eco Heroes: Zero Litter Campaign’ is a testament to our commitment to creating a cleaner and greener future.

“Through this campaign, we aim to empower our pupils to take active roles in reducing litter, recycling and participating in tree planting activities.

“These actions, although small, have a profound impact on our environment,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Guest Speaker, Mr Absalom Jimba, charged the young Eco heroes to take responsibilities as their collective efforts were powerful steps to a cleaner and greener world.

“The theme reminds us of the vital role we play in protecting our environment. Littering only not tarnishes our beautiful surroundings but also harms wildlife and pollutes our water and soil.

“Each piece of litter we see is a small reminder of the impact human actions have on our planet,” he said.

NAN also report that the commemoration featured tree planting exercise by the initiative and students of VineCare Schools as well as presentation of recyclables, non-recyclables and organic waste baskets to the school. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

  • S/ korea -Africa summit beginning of stronger cooperation on economy

S/ korea -Africa summit beginning of stronger cooperation on economy

    Economy

Seoul, June 5, 2024 (Yonhap/NAN) South Korea says it has signed nearly 50 initial agreements with African nations to boost cooperation on trade, energy, critical minerals and a wide range of other industrial and economic fields.

Seoul’s industry ministry said on Wednesday.

The memorandums of understanding (MOUs) were signed on the sidelines of the two-day Korea-Africa Summit held in Seoul from Tuesday, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.

The summit was the first of its kind hosted by South Korea for African partners, which focused on expanding their cooperative relations.

At the government-to-government level, 12 MOUs were signed between South Korea and 11 African countries.

South Korea and Tanzania declared the initiation of negotiations for an economic partnership agreement (EPA) with a goal to deepen their trade ties.

An EPA is meant to establish a mutually beneficial trade network with partner nations beyond a simple market opening, though it covers a smaller scope of areas compared with a traditional free trade agreement.

South Korea also agreed with Morocco upon talks to push for negotiations on a bilateral EPA, which would call for a stronger relationship on supply chains, digital industry and a broader range of trade issues.

The Seoul government also signed a Trade and Investment Promotion Framework with eight African countries, including Ghana, Malawi and Zimbabwe with the goal of facilitating trade and investment.

A respective agreement on critical minerals was signed with Tanzania and Madagascar, which is expected to help ensure South Korea’s stable supply chains of key industry minerals for the rechargeable battery and other sectors.

Among state-run agencies and private entities of South Korea and the African nations, 16 MOUs and 19 contracts were signed on the margins of the summit.

Of the contracts, South Korea’s Hyosung Corp. signed a transformer supply deal with the power agency of Mozambique.

Those agreements aimed to expand bilateral cooperation on advanced small modular reactors, electricity, new renewable energy resources, critical minerals and infrastructure projects, as well as trade and investment, according to the ministry.

A business summit took place in Seoul, which brought together some 400 government officials from South Korea and Africa, including presidents and top officials from 18 African nations.

as well as corporate officials from Hyundai Motor Co., LG Corp., POSCO Holding Inc. and Doosan Enerbility Co., among other firms.

The participants discussed how to work more closely on facilitating the industrialisation of African nations and strengthening their economic security in terms of food, major minerals and joint responses to climate change, the ministry said.

“The partnership between South Korea and Africa is a tell-tale example of how global citizens, in spite of different backgrounds, can get together to achieve the goal of joint prosperity,” Industry Minister Ahn Duk-geun told the summit, vowing thorough follow-up measures to achieve tangible.(Yonhap/NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
