Address workers’ demands within 7-day window, LP urges FG

    Workers
    By Adeyemi Adeleye
Lagos, June 5, 2024 (NAN) The Labour Party (LP) has appealed to the Federal Government to expedite actions to address the request of Nigerian workers within the seven-day window for renegotiation on new minimum wage.

The Lagos State Publicity Secretary of the party, Mrs Olubunmi Odesanya, made this plea in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Lagos.

Odesanya said: “Basically, the request of the workers should be addressed.

“We are not saying the Federal Government should pay N494,000 as minimum wage, but they should seriously look at their request.

“Both Government and the Labour Union should come to a midpoint to reflect today’s realities.

“Nigerian workers deserve more than they are getting currently because of the country’s inflation rate, which is over 33.3 per cent.”

According to her, the cost of living for workers and Nigerians generally has increased so much that many are struggling to survive under the current economic crisis.

She said that government across levels must do more in reducing the cost of governance to get more funds to alleviate the suffering of the people.

“A paltry minimum wage of N30,000 for Nigerian workers, or should we say the N60,000 being proposed is far far too low to survive in this country.

“A bag of rice is about N80,000 now. Nigerians cannot even touch pepper and tomatoes now,” she said.

Odesanya urged Nigeria’s elected and appointed leaders to do more in sacrificing for masses.

The impasse between the organised labour and the Federal Government on the new minimum wage for workers led to the strike declared by labour unions on Monday, which grounded the nation’s economy.

However, with the Federal Government’s expression of commitment to raising the proposed minimum wage of N60,000 at a meeting with labour leaders on Monday evening, the organised labour on Tuesday afternoon announced suspension of the industrial action for a week.

Recalled that the government and the Organised Private Sector had initially proposed N48,000, then N54,000 and N57,000, which were all rejected by labour.

The organised labour had also proposed N615,000 as new minimum wage, but later reduced it to N497,000 and then to N494,000, to reflect the current rising cost of living.

  • Engaging Nollywood to showcase Nigeria’s tourism endowment

Engaging Nollywood to showcase Nigeria’s tourism endowment

By Joshua Olomu, News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)

All over the world film is more than an entertainment outlet. It is used as a tool for shaping opinions, driving national narratives to the larger world and projecting a nation’s cultures, economic, technological and other advantages.

Besides its entertainment value, one area where the motion picture is intentionally applied is as a tool for global marketing and advertisement of the tourism sector.

Films are unique platforms for promoting tourism, offering a blend of entertainment and destination marketing that can captivate audiences and inspire travel.

Some of the most admired and visited tourist attractions and destinations, such as the Eiffel Tower in Paris and the Great Wall of China attracted global attention through the power of the visual media.

The wonder of the screen can make tourists travel from around the world to visit the Statue of Liberty in New York and the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt.

Films are powerful tools for promoting tourism by bringing destinations to life, showcasing their unique attributes, and inspiring audiences to visit the real-world locations they have seen on screen.

The Nigeria’s film industry, known as Nollywood, is globally recognised as the second largest film producer in the world, turning out over 2,500 movies yearly.

It is only surpassed by Bollywood of India, even though Nollywood does not rake in as much income annually as the others, it is renowned for its rich and unique story telling attributes.

Before COVID-19 pandemic erupted Hollywood contributed $504 billion to the U.S. GDP. The figure represents at least 3.2 per cent of the goods and services portion of GDP.

Conversely, according to a research firm, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Nigeria’s film industry contributed only $660 million to Nigeria’s GDP in 2021.

One of those who think Nollywood can do better in terms of revenue generation for the country is the Vice-Chancellor, University of Abuja, Prof AbdulRasheed Na’Allah.

“Nollywood can turn around the fortunes of the Nigerian economy. The government must understand that now.

“It is in the interest of the government to know that film industries are multi-million-dollar ventures. They can create wealth.

“From all over the world, people are watching Nollywood. People are beginning to know Nigeria through Nollywood.

“Is it our music, film, cultural dance, or language? We are taking the world by surprise, and because it is going to Japan, China and America, it is creating foreign reserves for Nigeria”, he said.

He spoke at a three-day conference in Abuja, yesterday, in honour of visiting lecturer, Prof Onookome Okome of the Department of English and Film Studies, University of Alberta, Canada, the VC tasked the Federal Government to support Nollywood.

Just like the Nigerian music brand, Afrobeat, Nollywood products has evolved to become global brands that are known and accepted across the world.

In recent times, the industry has produce blockbusters that have been screened in international cinemas, nominated and screened at prestigious festivals such as the Toronto Film Festival, Berlin Film Festival, Cannes Film Festival, among others.

Therefore, it can be argued that Nollywood, as one of Nigeria’s best exports to the world, has not been adequately engaged in showcasing the nation’s rich tourism potential to attract inbound tourists.

Nigeria is known for its rich historical and cultural heritage, breath-taking landscapes and diverse wildlife, which position it as a potential choice destination for tourists seeking unique experiences and adventures.

The country is home to nature tourism, with a lot of natural attractions, including lush rainforest, Savannas, wetlands and unique flora and fauna, spread across its six geopolitical zones.

This diverse ecosystem  offer interesting  activities  to tourists, such as  bird-watching,photography,star-gazing,camping,hunting,fishing,hiking and games viewing.

However, with these amazing tourism attractions spread across the country, beside various cultural fiesta and celebrations, Nigeria is yet to be classified as global tourism destination.

In the 2019 UNTWO World Tourism Ranking, Nigeria was not among the first 10 countries in Africa, with Egypt, Morocco and South Africa standing at first, second and third positions in that order.

Primarily, this ranking is based number of visitors and the income generated from the sector within the period.

Perhaps, inadequate packaging, promotion and effective marketing of the nation’s tourism attractions to the global market is the major drawback to the sector, and this  is where Nollywood should be engaged by relevant authorities.

There is need for synergy between industry players, and this is where the Nigerian Film Corporation (NFC) and the Nigerian Tourism Development Authority (NTDA) need to show political will, patriotism and commitment.

NFC has the mandate to establish a robust framework for fostering a thriving and enduring film industry and cinema culture in Nigeria, and thereby actively contributing to the socio-economic advancement of the nation.

One of the NFC’s cardinal functions is to produce films for domestic consumption and export, and this is what puts it in the best position to engage stakeholders in Nollywood.

NTDA is responsible for the planning, supervision, development and marketing of tourism in Nigeria, and it has the duty to encourage people living in Nigeria to take their holidays therein and people from abroad to visit Nigeria.

These agencies need to join hands to initiate a pilot project and engage relevant guilds in Nollywood including   the Screen Writers Association of Nigeria, Association of Movie Producers and the Actors Guild of Nigeria.

At the ideation stage of the project, a script should be written with a story line that set historical and cultural   landmarks, parks and wildlife as locations for such film.

Other tourist locations such as Yankari Game Reserves,  Ikogosi warm spring, Erin Ijesha water fall, Ojukwu Bunker, among others should as well  be captured.

The various cultural festivals such as Argungu Fishing Festival, Osun Osogbo Festival, the  Calabar Carnival and others should be reflected in such project.

The Federal Government, through its relevant ministries, should as well come up with an incentive mechanism for filmmakers whose projects tends to promote the nation’s tourism landscape.

These collaborations between filmmakers and tourism authorities will consequently   lead to joint marketing efforts where film trailers can be paired with tourism advertisements, and locations can offer incentives for film crews to shoot there.

There is no doubt, if well engaged, Nollywood films will introduce audiences to locations they might not have known about, effectively serving as advertisements for these places.

Such films will also highlight the cultural aspects of a location, from food and festivals to traditions and architecture, and this cultural exposure can evoke viewers’ interest in experiencing these elements first hand.

As Nollwood   films take more dominant place on global stage, using them to highlight the rich tourism attractions that abound in the country will create emotional connections with viewers.

This will attract both domestic and inbound tourists to locations  which will ultimately bring  sustainable tourism  development and make the sector a major source of national revenue.

To be a vehicle for selling Nigerian’s tourism potential to the international community, Nollywood should take the positives from the country.

Then Speaker of House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, addressed this concern at Leadership Master Training for Nollywood Celebrities and Stakeholders training under the platform of Actors’ Guild of Nigeria (AGN).

“Beyond the questions of economics and profit, there is the issue of the critical role of Nollywood in influencing culture, defining national character, and promoting national identity.

“You also have a responsibility to tell the best stories of our beloved country’’, said Gbajabiamila, now Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu.

The Minister of Art, Culture and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, acknowledges to enormity of the task but remains upbeat about what the industry can do.

“We are uniquely positioned in this great nation, endowed with an abundance of human capital and boundless possibilities.

“Our collective aim is singular, and it is bold: to position Nigeria as the world’s culture, creativity and entertainment capital“, she said. (NANFeatures)

Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy inaugurates Eko Law App

    Law

    By Aderonke Ojediran

Lagos, June 5, 2024 (NAN) The Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy on Wednesday inaugurated a web application, Eko Laws Simplifier App, created to educate Lagos residents about laws and give accessibility to all and sundry.

Mr Usman Adeniji, the Team Lead of the Ace group, disclosed this at a press briefing which held at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre, Alausa, Ikeja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the app will be launched June 6, to make the laws of Lagos State easily accessible to residents.

The Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy is a programme that aims to build skills, awareness, and a nuanced perspective among young people to tackle challenges in various fields including the public sector.

The Eko Laws Simplifier App Initiative is the brainchild of the 2024 Cohorts of the Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy.

Adeniji said that the App became necessary because many residents had no knowledge of the law and how it impacted their rights and the need to demand good governance.

“Access to laws and legal information is a significant challenge in Lagos State, Nigeria, where approximately 70% of residents have experienced a legal problem in the past year (Lagos State Ministry of Justice, 2021).

” In spite of the importance of laws in governing daily activities, many residents lack access to clear and understandable legal information, with only about 30% having access to legal information (Lagos State Citizens’ Mediation Centre, 2020).

“This leads to increased legal problems, over-reliance on informal sources, and a growing workload for the judiciary with over 30,000 cases filed in 2022 alone (Lagos State Judiciary).

“To address these challenges, it is essential to create a centralised and user-friendly legal resource that provides easy access to laws and legal information,” he said.

Adeniji further highlighted some of the benefits of The Eko Laws Simplifier Project to Lagos residents, saying “it is a groundbreaking initiative designed to transform the legal landscape of Lagos State.

“We are excited to highlight the following advantages for Lagos residents. which are not limited to – easy access to legal information, the Simplifier project provides a centralised and user-friendly platform for Lagos residents to access legal resources, reduces the complexity and difficulty of finding updated laws and legal information.

“Also, improved compliance by providing easy access to understandable legal information, the Simplifier App will facilitate greater compliance with laws and regulations among Lagos residents.

“This increased compliance can contribute to a more orderly and law-abiding state, and improved understanding of legal concepts.

“The project’s educational content and interactive features help demystify legal language and jargon, making legal information more accessible and understandable for Lagos residents,” he said.

The Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Gbenga Omotoso, represented by the Senior Special Adviser to the Governor on New Media, Mr Jubril Gawat, said the Eko Laws Simplifier App was one of the laudable initiatives of the Academy, which would bring governance closer to the people. • Graduation: Olu of Warri’s wife urges stakeholders to prioritise education

    Graduation

    By Funmilayo  Adeyemi

Abuja, June 5, 2024 (NAN)The Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) Academy, Abuja, has graduated  five high school students (senior secondary school students) and three middle school students (Junior secondary) for the 2024 session.

Addressing the gradaunds at the Class of 2024 graduation celebration in Abuja, Wife of the Olu of Warri, Olori Ivie Atuwatse III, urged relevant stakeholders to prioritise education.

According to her, it is the  duty of the stakeholders to prioritise education for sustainable growth and development of the nation.

“Nigeria’s education system is plagued with many challenges and I will liken it to an elephant; you cannot eat a whole elephant at once.

“The many challenges resemble the body of an elephant; the first thing that we must do as a nation is to take education seriously.

“Once you take education seriously, then we can begin to take necessary steps to ensuring that we build our education system to one that can compete globally.

“The first step we must do is to be committed to eating the elephant, be committed to education, be committed to ensuring that you are making an impact and make education a priority,” she said.

She added that prioritising education would translate to addressing out-of-school children, teacher training, infrastructure and curriculum issues.

She  urged the graduands to be intentional in shining their light noting that their abilities to shine would build resilient in them and as well lead them to their destinies.

The Head of School, CTL Academy, Dr Agodi Alagbe, said that the academy had always striven for excellence.

Alagbe affirmed that the achievements of the academy stood as testimony to the quality of education imparted to students and unwavering commitment to staff members.

She said that over the years, the academy had nurtured and shaped young minds, instilling in them the values of knowledge, integrity and perseverance.

“We are very child-centred; we don’t believe that any two children are the same and so we do what we call differentiated instruction.

“This means you could have few kids in the same class and grade level but we really get to know the children as individuals and create learning opportunities that are specific to their needs.

“So they can grow, flourish and maximise their potential; we have given them all it will take them to succeed; we are waiting to see what they will become,” she said.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Chief of Mission, U.S. Embassy, Mr Robert Gabor, commended the school for investing in the future of Nigerians, charging the graduands to also invest in their abilities and communities.

Gabor also called on the graduands to learn new skills as that was the only way to contribute to the growth and development of their immediate community and country at large.

Some of the graduating students, who spoke to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), pledged their allegiance to Nigeria and to contribute their knowledge towards developing the country.

Alex-Xerina Idusuyi, one of the students, who had secured an admission to study international business at the Wichita State University, U.S., pledged to return after her programme to build the nation.

Also, the school’s best graduating student, Lotachi Alagbe, attributed her academic feat to the support and encouragement from her family and friends.

Alagbe, who had also secured an admission at the Preston University, U.S., vowed to return and contribute her quota toward the development of the country.

NAN reports that the school, which has the nursery, primary and secondary sections, offered the American curriculum for both local and international students. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

  • Reopened: NDIC begins payment of Heritage Bank depositors — MD

    Payment

    By Ginika Okoye

Abuja, June 5, 2024 (NAN) The Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC), says it will begin payment of insured sum to 2.3 million depositors of Heritage Bank in-liquidation within the week.

The Managing Director of NDIC, Mr Bello Hassan, said this while briefing newsmen in Abuja on Wednesday.

The managing director said the move was to engender confidence among depositors to promote financial stability.

He said that 99.9 per cent of depositors of the defunct bank had a deposit balance of less than five million naira while only 4,000 of the depositors had more than five million naira deposit.

Hassan said the bank had deposits worth N650 billion and loans of about N700 billion.

He said the deposits and the loans could be more, adding that the final amount would be known at the end of the liquidation processes.

According to him, customers with Bank Verification Number (BVN) will be paid without verification with the Corporation while those without BVN will visit the nearest NDIC office or website for their verification.

The managing director said that there was no need for depositors to panic as the Corporation would settle all insured deposits.

“NDIC has assumed charge of the Heritage Bank.

“The bank has 116 branches and regional offices and we have deployed close to 400 staff of NDIC to take charge of the assets.

“If you have N100, we will pay you, if you have N5 million, we will pay you, if you have N10 million, we will pay N5 million for now because that is the insured sum.

“Depositors do not need to panic, you will get your monies back.

“We will start payment of the insured sums by this week but it will be difficult for me to give the time frame for the payment of the uninsured deposits,’’ he said.

On challenges of banks’ liquidation, he said the Corporation had experienced difficulties in loans recoveries.

Hassan, however, assured that the Corporation would immediately commence the process to avoid delays.

On litigations, he said the Corporation was ready for any litigation that would emanate from the handover of the bank.

Hassan said the Corporation would rely on support from the judiciary for expedited hearings on any debt recovery case brought by the Corporation.

“When cases are delayed in debt recovery, it is depositors that suffer.

“We believe that the judiciary will give the cases accelerated hearing,’’ he said.

The managing director assured bank customers that the system was safe and sound, saying that they should continue their banking businesses without fear. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

We must work together to flush out criminals – CAS

    Criminals

    By Sumaila Ogbaje

Abuja, June 5, 2024 (NAN) The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, has stressed the need for concerted efforts by all to flush out criminal elements from Delta and environs.

Abubakar said this on Wednesday in Asaba, while interfacing with Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta during a courtesy visit to the governor.

This is contained in a statement by the Director, Public Relations and Information, NAF, AVM Edward Gabkwet, on Wednesday in Abuja.

Abubakar also emphasised the need to also emplace effective civil-military cooperation where all parties could work as peace and security stakeholders.

He said that meaningful development would be difficult to attain without a peaceful environment, with negative consequences on the livelihoods of ordinary citizens.

The CAS called on residents of the state to continue to cooperate with security agencies in their concerted efforts to rid Delta of all criminal elements.

He thanked the governor for his disposition and firm support to the Armed Forces and the NAF in particular.

According to him, the priority the governor has been giving to security in Delta, especially in the last 12 months has fostered a more conducive environment for sustained socio-economic activities.

The Air Chief also thanked the governor for the allocation of a large expanse of land with Certificate of Occupancy to the NAF, at Osubi, measuring about 66.6 hectares.

According to him, this is for the development of a full-fledged NAF Base which signifies a landmark event in the history of Delta and NAF relations.

Responding, Oborevwori commended Abubakar for the commitment of the NAF in fighting the scourge of insecurity bedeviling the nation.

He said that the visit was a testimony to the strong bond and partnership between the state and the NAF.

The governor assured the CAS that his administration would soon commence the construction of the road leading to the 66.6 hectares of land allocated to the NAF.

He promised to allocate another parcel of land for the construction of Post-Service Housing Scheme for retiring NAF personnel in the state.

Oborevwori condemned in its entirety, the unfortunate incident of March 14, which resulted in the loss of lives of some personnel of the Nigerian Army at Okuama Village.

Highlight of the visit was the presentation of the Certificate of Occupancy for the 66.6 hectares of land at Osubi by the Governor to the CAS. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
