German prosecutors demand jail term for suspected Hezbollah members

    Prosecutors

Hamburg, June 5, 2024 (dpa/NAN) German prosecutors have demanded prison sentences for two defendants in the first trial of suspected members of the Lebanese Hezbollah in Germany.

The press office of the Hanseatic Higher Regional Court announced on Wednesday that if convicted, a 50-year-old Lebanese man could face five and a half years in jail for membership in a foreign terrorist organisation.

The second defendant, a 56-year-old German-Lebanese citizen, the prosecution requested three years in prison.

The two suspects were detained in the Lower Saxony on May 10, 2023.

The 56-year-old is said to have been a member of an elite military unit in Hezbollah.

From 2009, he was reportedly active as a member and later chairman of the al-Mustafa community which was banned in Germany in 2022.

Hezbollah has been banned from operating in Germany since 2020 April’s ending.

The Shia Islamist organisation, which Germany classifies as a terrorist group, denies Israel’s right to exist.

The prosecution argues that in addition to attacks on military targets, the Iran-backed group also sees attacks on civilians as legitimate.(dpa/NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

  • HOMEF seeks state of emergency on environment

    Environment

    By Nathan Nwakamma

Yenagoa, June 5, 2024 (NAN) Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF), an ecology advocacy group, has urged the Federal Government to urgently declare a state of emergency on the environment.

Executive Director, HOMEF,  Dr Nnimmo Bassey, made the call on Wednesday in a statement to commemorate the 2024 World Environment Day (WED).

Bassey said that the 2024 World Environment Day was dedicated to communities whose lands and livelihoods had been lost to extractivism and pollution.

The theme for 2024 WED is “Land Restoration, Desertification and Drought Resilience.’’

According to Bassey, this year’s celebration urges us to reflect on stewardship duty towards the nature, environment and all living beings rather than continuing with a predatory and destructive relationships that negate collective well-being.

He urged that steps must be taken to halt deforestation, biodiversity erosion and land degradation, adding that without serious climate action humanity would remain on a downward spiral to multiple crises that were already plaguing the world.

“Today is a good time for reflection and a change of direction.”

Bassey said that the 2024 WED offered Nigeria a template for socioeconomic and environmental reexamination and action.

He explained that parts of Africa were ravaged by environmental degradation, water stress and drought as Nigeria was particularly affected by desertification and other ecological harms.

“As we celebrate World Environment Day, we remind ourselves that our environment has been plagued with destructive activities especially through resource extraction and poor land-use changes.

“Nigeria needs an emergency environmental restoration plan across board as the only way to build resilience and ensure a safe future.

“This is our duty to ourselves and to future generations and immediate steps should be taken by the Nigerian government to ensure the proper clean-up of polluted lands, restoration of same and payment of compensation for damage suffered.

“We must wake up from the futile dream that the earth can be recklessly exploited without dire consequences.

“We need to understand that the generous gifts of Nature must be handled with gratitude and care.

“We are living witnesses to the crimes committed in mining communities, oil fields and conflict zones.

“We must protect our biodiversity; reject species-eroding genetic modifications of all sorts and support harmonious relationships with Nature.”

Bassey said that the WED was an important day for governments to resolve to ensure that communities were fully informed, consulted and their consent received before projects that impacted of the environment were designed or implemented.

According to him, it must never be forgotten that these communities continuously tackle the impacts of the multidimensional ecological crisis in their unsupported and vulnerable state and deserve to be protected.

“We should transformatively change our policies and choices to live sustainably in harmony with nature; with the complete understanding that the planet is our only home and that her resources are finite,” he said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

  • RCCG trains over 1,000 youths on digital technology

    By Kemi Akintokun

Lagos, June 5,  2024 (NAN) No fewer than 1,000 youths across the country  have been trained by the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) on data analysis, cyber security and other digital contents.

Mr Funsho Odesola, RCCG Continental Overseer for Southwest Nigeria and the Middle East told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, that the training was aimed at empowering youths with technology and making them relevant in the future.

Odesola said the programme with the theme: “Future Clan Boot Camp: Empowering The Youths For A Digital Future”,  started virtually and was concluded at the Redemption City.

He said:“The present education we have doesn’t connect with the reality of the digital future.

“Every six months, new things are coming up; what you learnt about six months ago becomes irrelevant. And when you check all our curriculum, they never connect with the reality in progress.

“This disconnection makes it impossible to address today’s problem and challenges.

“So, we’ve taken it upon ourselves to see that the young ones are equipped for the future, not just people in the church, but people in Nigeria and in Africa.

“Over 5,000 youths applied for this programme but the number was screened to 1,000,” he said.

Odesola noted that the training was open to all Nigerians, irrespective of their religion or where they resided, adding  that youths from Middle East, Cyprus, Turkey and other part of the world also took part in the Cyber Security boot camp.

He disclosed that RCCG created more centres in the states of Lagos , Ondo, Oyo, Ogun Osun, Ekiti and Kwara to contribute to the development of the nation by empowering youth with knowledge.

Speaking also, Mrs Eyono Fatai-Williams, the CEO of African Missions Global, said the initiative would be impactful owing to the large number of participants.

“African Missions Global is a faith-based charity that started in 1996 by Pastor Mrs Folu Adeboye—the wife of the general overseer of the RCCG.

“We have an ambition to impact 100,000,000 lives globally by 2033, and there’s no way we can make such impact without leveraging on what digital space has to offer.

“We believe that with this initiative, we can reach a large number of youths, at least a million a year on this.

Also, the Programme Manager of Incubator Nigeria, Olawale Olatujuoye, one of the organisers, said the training was put together with the aim to help the youth participate actively in the 4th Industrial Revolution.

Olatujuoye explained that Africa had missed out on the first, the second and the third industrial revolutions, hence the need to level up by enabling  youths to be more active and viable to participate in the 4th industrial revolution.

“Gaining the right skills, which is paramount to that, is what we’re doing for them here, which is the basic entry point into the 4th industrial revolution.

“We believe that quite a number of them will start from here, learn, get jobs, gather experience, start their own company and contribute to the economy”, he said.

Meanwhile, one of the participants, Oluwakemi Olubodun, who took data analysis course at the boot camp, said the training had impacted her  mentally and spiritually.

“As an analyst, you have to be on your feet, be creative, have problem-solving skills and this boot camp has done that and more for me,” she said.

Another participant, Anuoluwaokitan Ajayi, said his experience was amazing, adding that he enjoyed his time at the camp.

“It’s been a beautiful one week as a cyber security expert, I came here to learn and network with people along the same career path.

“Aside cyber security skill, I also learnt soft skills on how to relate with new people I meet, how to excel in job interviews and I was also impacted spiritually.

“I look forward to applying the skills I’ve acquired here to secure applications, secure web servers, defend against cyber attacks and tackle other issues relevant to the cyberspace,” he said.

Damilola Davis, who also benefited from the programme,  said it increased his quest for knowledge.

“I intentionally wanted to develop myself in the virtual space, so I chose Cloud Computing (AWS).

“This is because it incorporates every of AWS’s services and business needs,” he said. (NAN)

  • Effective justice delivery as pathway to economic growth, development

Effective justice delivery as pathway to economic growth, development

By Ebere Agozie, News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)

Efficient justice delivery is central to the nation’s economic growth and development. Legal experts say justice is administration of what is just.

This is done through impartial adjustment of conflicting claims or the assignment of merited rewards or punishments. Justice delayed is justice denied is a maxim that highlights the importance speed in justice delivery.

The backlog of cases at different levels that overwhelm the justice delivery system, seems to hamper the principle of rule of law.

Nigerians have not hidden their desire for holistic justice sector reform to restore public confidence and trust in the sector and the rule of law.

The judicial system, therefore, experiences increasing demands for an improved institutional capacity to deliver effective justice.

This demand presents a significant challenge as it reflects yawning gaps in the country’s capacity to deliver an efficient and responsive justice system to respond to the 21 century developments in the global justice system.

The justice sector, which is supposed to be the last hope of the common man, is squeaking under the weight of a heavy caseload and myriads of problems.

This perhaps, informed the decision of the Federal Ministry of Justice to organise a national summit on justice sector reform. It had as its theme “sitioning the Justice System: Constitutional, Statutory, and Operational Reforms for Access and Efficiency’’.

Stakeholders at the summit agreed that effective justice delivery is central to the nation’s economic growth and development and the wellbeing of its citizens.

They also agreed that a budding democracy depends heavily on the resolve of all stakeholders to commit to an efficient and robust judicial system.

Speaking at the event, President Bola Tinubu underscored the urgency for leaders of justice sector institutions to prioritise comprehensive reforms.

“I implore the nation’s judiciary to embark on reforms that would ensure a functional justice system that will support a rapidly growing economy, guarantee basic human and political rights of individuals, as well as provide security and justice to all Nigerians.

“Much can be achieved when institutions of government, including the Executive, Legislature and Judiciary, unite to acknowledge their challenges and brainstorm with a view to proffering solutions to the problems bedeviling Nigeria’’, Tinubu said.

Tinubu, who pledged that he will continue to be impartial and adhere to constitutional principles, outlined the preliminary measures he took in order to reposition the judiciary.

“My administration made funding for the third arm of government a top priority, doubling it in the Renewed Hope budget 2024 by more than 100 per cent from last year’s budget.

“My government has also made up the full complement of 21 Justices of the Supreme Court (JSCs) as required by law.

“This is for the first time after many years, and approved a substantial increase in the salaries and emoluments of judges, which is currently undergoing legislative action.

“I accordingly urge the leadership of all justice sector institutions to seek a new direction and focus on outcomes by creating a justice system that truly responds to the needs of our citizens”, he said.

There is a nexus between the welfare of senior judicial officers and their ability to deliver justice in timely and fair manner as alluded to by the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Olukayode Ariwoola.

, noted that Nigerians would suffer the consequences of injustice if judges are deprived of good salaries, allowances and official benefits and urges urgent steps to remedy the situation.

“The situation of judges across Nigeria is like one in a critical condition in the ICU. The beam, the schedule to the beam would stabilise the patient.

“The one captain in the appropriation door would have him moved from the ICU to the general ward.

“When a patient is in that condition, you don’t start physiotherapy at the ICU. You make sure he is stabilised, move to the general ward, gain some strength, and then you now look at physiotherapy and all other therapies.

“Do move quickly, move the patient out of the ICU to the general ward. Let us stabilise the patient, move him out of ICU and then we can talk about the rest later,” the CJN prescribed.

Questions have been raised about the sincerity of those who hold in trust the rule of law in the country and their seeming nonchalant attitude towards justice delivery.

There is also public concern about indiscipline at the Bar and on the Bench. Discipline or lack of it a significant contributor to the current situation in the nation’s justice sector..

Corruption in the judicial system is spoken about in hush voices and some stakeholders said they will leave no stone unturned to ensure that judicial officers within their fold acted in accordance with the law.

Benchers agreed that corruption has reached alarming proportions in the legal profession and that the practice permeates both the Inner and the Outer Bars.

“It is commonly believed that my colleagues of the Inner Bar perpetrate and involve themselves in unwholesome practices with impunity.

“I have challenged those I read and knew their authors on social media and I am waiting for proof on any of these allegations.

“There is need for all of us to be conversant with the Rules of Professional Conduct at the Bar published in 2023 and that are fundamental provisions that are a complete departure from all the previous Rules.

“The Body of Benchers will not fail in its duty to apply the Rules and enforce discipline no matter the status, position or rank of any legal practitioner involved’’, says Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and Chairman of the Body  Bencher.

Awomolo said that attainment of national stability and development can only happen when the proper and the right instrumentalits of the law is enacted, faithfully implemented, obeyed and enforced.

He said that law is only meaningful when it addresses the common goal of government of the people, by the people and for the people.

He said that Nigeria has remained stagnated, poorly governed, and underdeveloped because of a deficit in the quality of governance by the people we elected into political offices, and those appointed into public offices.

“The country’s problems include a dysfunctional socio-political structure, entrenched corruption, and an unproductive economy, hence, there is a dispute over whether or not Nigeria is a failed State.

Corroborating Awomolo, another Senior Advocate of Nigeria Mr Chris Uche said sadly people of Nigeria have completely lost hope in the legal profession.

He, therefore, called on his learned brothers to have a rethink and help the society.

“The nation is almost dead. People have lost hope in this our profession, so we want to see how our gathering today will help to give us hope as lawyers.

“It has always been said that the judiciary is the last hope of the common man, but in recent times in this country that has become very debatable”.

He urged legal practitioners to use the law to build the society, to help the country, and to also help themselves. (NANFeatures)
