    Reps committee suspends sales of Kaduna Poly property

    Abuja, June 28, 2024 (NAN) The House of Representatives Committee on Public Assets has suspended the allocation of land and houses in Kaduna Polytechnic to non-staff of the institution.

    The suspension followed consideration of the petition by the committee in Abuja.

    The serving and retired staff of the Polytechnic had petitioned against the management of the school over the indiscriminate allocations.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the committee had summoned the Rector of the Polytechnic, Dr. Suleiman Umar.

    Also invited for investigation were Perm Sec., the Ministry of Education, and the Head of the Presidential Implementation Committee (PIC), as well as the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP).

    Others are the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Polytechnics (SSANIP), Kaduna Polytechnic branch.

    Kuye, however, said that the specific date, time, and venue for their appearance would be communicated to them later.

    Kuye said the suspension became necessary because most of the plots of land and houses at the school were sold to non-staff.

    He added that, as such, future lecturers and non-teaching staff would not find it easy to operate.

    NAN reports that the petitioners had lamented over how the authorities of the Kaduna Polytechnic were carrying out illegal sales by carving out parts of their plots of land and selling them to non-staff of the institution.

    This was without remitting the money to the government account.

    Two leaders of the petitioners, Dr Omale Apochi and Isiaka Bankole, alleged that most of the teaching and non-teaching staff were not aware of the sale of the houses and plots of land belonging to the institution.

    Mr Bala Sanusi, Head of the Presidential Implementation Committee, said in his submission that the issue of leasing the polytechnic plots of land and houses had resulted in a legal battle.

    This, he said, lasted for over 10 years, but the issue was later resolved through an out-of-court settlement.

    According to Sanusi, the agreement reached by the parties led to the resolution, which was approved by the Kaduna Polytechnic Board, PIC, and Secretary to the Federal Government.

    According to the resolution, the non-staff of Kaduna Polytechnic shall not be beneficiaries of the allocations of plots of land and houses. (NAN) www.nannews.ng

    Lagos, June 28, 2024 ( NAN) A 39-year-old woman, Charity John, who allegedly bit her neighbour in the eye during a fight, was on Friday docked in a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    The police charged John, who resides in Orile, Lagos with conspiracy and assault.

    The Prosecutor, Insp Courage Ekhueorohan, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on June 18, at No 9, Makanjuola St., Sari-Iganmu, Orile, Lagos.

    Ekhueorohan alleged that the defendant who got into a fight with her neighbour and complainant, Stella Joseph, also bit her on the back and hand.

    He explained that an argument broke out following the complainant’s warning to defendant’s son to stop playing with her daughter’s toy.

    The offence, Ekhueorohan said, contravened the provisions of sections 173 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The defendant, however, denied committing the offence.

    Magistrate  O.O Otitoju admitted the defendant to bail on self recognisance becuase she is expected to write an apology letter and pay the complainant’s hospital bills.

    Otitoju adjourned the case until July 9 for mention. (NAN)

  • Man docked for allegedly stealing N955,000

    Badagry (Lagos State), June 28, 2024 (NAN) The Police, on Friday arraigned a 19-year-old man, Qudus Balogun, before a Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, for allegedly stealing N955,000.
    The defendant, whose residential address was not provided, was charged with stealing punishable under section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos, 2015.
    The prosecutor, ASP. Clément Okuoimose told the court that the defendant committed the offence on June 5, at about 11.39.p.m, at Badagry Roundabout, Lagos.
    He alleged that the defendant obtained the sum of N955,000 from one Mrs Wuraola Alfred, to give one Iya Gift at Owode-Apa, but ran away with the money.
    “The defendant was later caught two weeks later after spending the money at the same Badagry Roundabout.
    “The offence, contravened sections 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos, 2015,” he said
    The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge.
    The Chief Magistrate, Mr A. J. Aina granted the defendant a bail in the sum of N300,000 with two sureties in like sum.
    He ordered that the sureties should be gainfully employed and show evidence of tax payments to the Lagos State Government.
    Aina adjourned the case until Aug.19, for mention. (NAN)

    Tehran, June 28, 2024 (Xinhua/NAN) Voting for Iran’s 14th presidential election started at 8 a.m. (0430 GMT) on Friday, after President Ebrahim Raisi died in a helicopter crash in May.

    “We start the elections” for the country’s 14th presidential elections, Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi said in a televised address.

    Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei cast the first ballot at a polling station, and made a brief speech calling for the unity of the Iranian people during the election.

    The voting will be held at close to 59,000 polling stations in more than 95 states, and over 61 million people are eligible to vote in the election, according to authorities.

    Iran’s 14th presidential election, initially set for 2025, was rescheduled following Raisi’s unexpected death.

    Initially, six candidates were qualified to enter the race, namely; Amir-Hossein Ghazizadeh Hashemi, the current vice president; Alireza Zakani, the mayor of Tehran; Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, the parliamentary speaker.

    Others were Saeed Jalili, the former top negotiator for nuclear talks; Mostafa Pourmohammadi, a former interior minister and justice minister; and Masoud Pezeshkian, a former health minister.

    Later on, Hashemi and Zakani two principlist candidates, withdrew from the race in favor of Qalibaf and Jalili, who are also in the principlists’ camp.(Xinhua/NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

  • NUC accredits 5 more courses at Salem University Lokoja

    Lokoja, June 28, 2024 (NAN) The National Universities Commission (NUC), has accreditated five additional academic programmes at Salem University Lokoja, Kogi.

    The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Alewo Johnson-Akubo, made the disclosure while speaking with newsmen in Lokoja on Friday.

    He said the approval was conveyed to the institution via a letter dated June 6, and signed by the Acting Director, Accreditation, Abraham Chindusu on behalf of the NUC Acting Executive Secretary, Mr Chris Maiyaki.

    Johnson-Akubo said the development was sequel to the NUC’s earlier accreditation of seven other programmes being run by the university in 2022.

    The vice-chancellor listed the courses to include BSc Computer Science; BSc Information Technology, BSc Geology, BSc Microbiology, BSc Biochemistry, and MSc/MBA Business Administration.

    While the five recently accredited courses in the University’s College of Education, include Business Education, Education Computer Science, Education English, Educational Management and Social Studies.

    He said: “Only last year we got the NUC’s approval to run PhD programmes for the teaming Nigerian citizens and foreigners alike to boost education globally.

    “This accreditation is a cheering news to us as a university, which is out to train the youths to become global leaders and change agents that will bring about the needed growth and development in nations across the globe.

    “Today, virtually all the courses being run by Salem University Lokoja are fully accredited, notwithstanding the rush for our courses by candidates desiring to study with us.

    “Again, with the kind of infrastructural development we have in place in Salem University, we have what it takes to admit more students into our various departments”.

    Johnson-Akubo expressed gratitude to God and the Chancellor, Archbishop Sam Amaga, for making it possible for all the university programmes in the seven colleges to be fully accredited. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

    Ibadan, June 28, 2024 (NAN) Five shop attendants were on Friday docked in an Iyaganku Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan, for allegedly stealing 21 rolls of Magik detergent.

    The police charged Abosede Akinkunmi, 45; Blessing Onaifa, 42; Deborah Adebayo, 39; Philomina Ita, 35 and Kolade Shayo, 30 with conspiracy and thegt.

    They pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The prosecutor, Insp Iyabo Oladoyin, told the court that the defendants allegedly committed the offence on Wednesday, at about 1.30 p.m, at Nourdm Global company, Oluyole, Ibadan.

    Oladoyin said the offence contravened the provisions of sections 516 and 390(9) of the Criminal Laws of Oyo State, 2000.

    The Magistrate, Mrs Adebola Adeola, admitted the defendants to bail in the sum of N10, 000 each with one surety each in like sum.

    Okitipupa (Ondo State) June 28,, 2024 (NAN) A 54 year-old farmer, Tosin Lebile was on Friday docked in an Okitipupa Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ondo State, for allegedly breaking into awelding shop and stealing property worth N2.5million.

    The police charged Lebile, whose address was not given with felony, burglary and theft.

    The Police Prosecutor, ASP Zedekiah Orogbemi, told the court that the defendant and two others at large, on April 24 around 08.30 p.m at Temidayo Street in Okitipupa, Okitipupa magisterial district conspired to ccommitted felony.

    Orogbemi said that defendant and  his accomplices broke into a welding shop belonging to Ilesanmi Akinyemi and stole two welding machines, two grinding machines,  a generator alternator and  three engine plate covers .

    The police said the offence is punishable under Sections 516, 411 and 390 (9), Criminal Code, Cap.37, Vol. 1, Laws of Ondo State, 2006.

    The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mr Philip.Akinlosetu, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N500, 000 and two sureties in like sums.

    He added that the sureties, who must be reside within the court’s jurisdiction, must also show and present evidence of two years tax payment to the state government.

    The chief magistrate adjourned the case until July 4, for further hearing. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

    Awka, June 28, 2024 (NAN) The Anambra Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), has arrested four suspects involved in illegal mining activities in the state.

    NSCDC Commandant in the state, Olatunde Maku, parading the suspects on Friday in Awka, said they were arrested on Thursday at Ogbunike in Oyi Local Government Area.

    According to Maku, the arrest was in collaboration with Federal Mines Officers of the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development in charge of Anambra.

    He said that the team arrested the following suspects: Nnamani Chidubem, Ekemezie Ifeanyi, Okolie Patrick, and Onyedika Somtoo.

    “These suspects were caught mining Laterite without approval from the relevant authorities, causing environmental degradation in the area.

    “Exhibits recovered from the suspects include a truck-load of Laterite, with registration number LAGOS T- 13038 LA, nine heavy-duty batteries, one heavy duty hydraulic jack and four fuel filters.

    “This arrest is an indication and a strong signal to those illegal miners that it is no longer business as usual,” he added.

    The NSCDC commandant said that illegal mining constituted economic sabotage and posed environmental risks in the state.

    He commended the Solid Minerals Unit for sustaining efforts aimed at stamping out illegal miners in the state.

    Also speaking, Mr Henry Bolarinwa of the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development urged miners to operate with valid licenses and in approved mining sites.

    Bolarinwa said that the warning was necessary to block revenue leakages and prevent environmental hazards associated with illegal mining activities. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

  • Foundation donates 500 economic trees to FCT community

    Abuja, June 28, 2024 (NAN) Gee Foundation on Social Justice and Development, an NGO, has donated 500 stands of economic trees to Gasaki Jeje community in Karshi, FCT, during a one-day sensitisation visit.

    Mrs Gloria Agema, Executive-Director Gee Foundation, spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Abuja.

    She said that the foundation was working towards addressing land degradation in order to enhance climate resilience for improved women’s livelihood.

    Agema said it was pathetic that only one borehole served four communities and promised that the NGO and its partners would intervene by providing the community with more boreholes to follow up with the trees planted.

    The executive director said the community had been badly affected by erosion and has suffered landslides in recent past.

    “So, we felt it was wise to carry out land management practices by supporting the community with planting of trees.’’

    Agema explained that the project was funded by the French Embassy in Nigeria to plant 500 economic trees to address erosion and land degradation in the community.

    She added that her foundation was also in partnership with the Global Initiative for Food Security and Ecosystem Preservation.

    “We gave no fewer than 100 women that were targeted; two economic trees each, while the remaining trees were shared with the other members of the community.’’

    Agema expressed worries over the felling of trees in the community but expressed optimism that the chief of the community, Zaki Tanko, had assured them that such practice would be reduced.

    She said that the trees would be monitored to ascertain that the women achieved the desired aim of planting the trees.

    Ibadan, June 28, 2024 (NAN) An Iyaganku Magistrates’ Court, Ibadan, on Friday remanded Haruna Umaru, 22, Umar Abubakar, 30, Sulaiman Haruna, 31 and three others in a correctional facility in Ibadan, over an alleged armed robbery.

    The six whose addresses were not fixed, were charged with conspiracy and armed robbery.

    The Magistrate, Mrs Olasinmibo Sanusi-Zubair did not take the plea of the defendants for want of jurisdiction.

    She directed the police to return the case file to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice.

    Sanusi-Zubair   adjourned the case until July 29, for mention.

    The prosecutor, Insp Oladejo Balogun told the court that the defendants allegedly committed the offence on May 17, at about 3.59 a.m, at Asani village, Ogbomoso, Oyo State.

    He alleged that the defendants while armed with guns, cutlasses and sticks robbed Eluyinka Sodiq of his car worth N6.9 million, phones and cash of N62, 000.

    Balogun  said the offences contravened Sections 6 (b) of the Robbery and Firearms Laws of Nigeria, 2004. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
