Lagos PDP crisis: Adewale’s ward counter’s SEC ,denies suspending  him

    Suspension
    By Adeyemi Adeleye
Lagos, June 21, 2024 (NAN) The PDP leadership at Ward M1, Alimosho Local Government Area (LGA) in Lagos says the party’s former State Chairman, Otunba Segun Adewale (aka Aeroland) remains a bonafide PDP member at the ward.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Adewale, whose political base is Alimosho ,was suspended by the LGA exco for allegedly causing disaffection in the party and tarnishing the party’s image.

Adewale’s suspension was announced by Alhaji Isiaka Shodiya, the PDP Chairman in Alimosho LGA , at a news conference on June 11 in Lagos.

Similarly, the Lagos State PDP Executive Committee on Friday ratified the indefinite suspension of Adewale, acting on  petitions from the LGA executive against the party chieftain.

In a letter signed by Mr Soji Orioye, the State Secretary, the PDP Executive Committee(SEC) also said Adewale’s ward had notified it about his suspension, via a letter.

However, Mr Kenneth Nwaeze, the PDP Chairman, Ward M1, in Alimosho LGA, said the party chieftain was never suspended at the ward.

In a communique issued after the ward executive meeting on Friday, Nwaeze said  Adewale remained a bonafide member of the party  and  should be accorded due respect as a party member.

Describing Adewale as major party financier at the ward, Nwaeze said that his purported suspension by the LGA and State Executive Committee  was illegal.

The chairman said: “We are pleased to inform the general public and PDP stakeholders nationwide that the ward M1 executive dissociates Itself from the purported suspension of Otunba Segun Adewale (Aeroland) from our party.

“We have not ,for once, have any reason ,whatsoever, to set up a disciplinary committee against Adewale, whom we hold in high esteem and had recently passed a vote-of-confidence in him as a law abiding, loyal, committed and major financier of our great party at the ward, LGA and state level.”he said.

He said that the news of the ratification of Adewale’s suspension by the state executive committee  came to the ward leaders as a surprise .

“We are bold to inform the party leadership nationwide that we didn’t carry out any disciplinary procedure against Otunba Segun Adewale and were not consulted either by the LGA or state before any disciplinary action was unconstitutionally taken,” he said.

He called on the PDP State Secretary, Mr Soji Orioye, to kindly remove the part where he stated that the suspension of Adewale was carried out by the ward.

“This is a malicious fabrication capable of instigating disunity among the peace-loving and long-suffering members of our ward, who have sacrificed for the party in the past. This is an act of incrimination on our part.

“While we continue to show maximum respect for the higher level of our great party, we expected that for the state to ratify an ill-fated suspension of a prominent financier of the party in the state, the state executive or perhaps the State Secretary or Legal Adviser would exercise  due diligence.

“The party leaders should have constituted a fact-finding committee to get to the root of the matter at the ward level before taking any  action,” Nwaeze said.

He said that the ward leaders believed that the state executive must have been misinformed that the suspension was carried out by the ward as evident in the ratification letter.

“We also wish to state clearly that the LGA can not usurp or override the legitimate and constitutional authorities and procedures vested in the ward executive by our party constitution.

“The purported suspension of Aeroland by the LGA was carried out in bad faith and in total disregard of the constitution of our party which empowers the ward executive to carry out the suspension of a member of our party.

“The disciplinary procedures against erring members as clearly stated in our party Constitution section (57) 1 to 7 is unambiguous.

“The body of the purported suspension letter written by the LGA executive and the procedure was not in anyway in conformity with the party Constitution as stated above,” he added.

He said that the state executive acted without consultation and investigation before taking action, saying at no time was the party chieftain questioned over any act of misconduct at the ward.

“Segun Adewale at the moment remains the most popular figure in Lagos PDP as evident in the result of 2023 general election ,where he garnered the highest votes for our party as Lagos West senatorial candidate.

“Adewale deserves utmost respect and appreciationfrom all levels and organs of the party for his moral and financial contributions to the growth and electoral performance of our party in Lagos State.

“He remains a prominent and one of the topmost financiers of our party in the state,” Nwaeze said.(NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

  • Arms control centre seeks database of illegal arms recovery from police

    Arms

    By Sumaila Ogbaje

Abuja, June 21, 2024 (NAN) The National Coordinator, National Centre for Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW), Johnson Kokumo, has urged the Nigeria Police to avail the centre with the database of recovered illicit arms.

Kokumo, retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG), made the request when he led management team of the centre in a courtesy visit to the Inspector -General of Police, Kayode EgbetokunWe on Friday in Abuja.

He said the visit was to solicit for more support and collaboration in the area of intelligence sharing, adding that the police was highly dependable when it came to intelligence gathering.

“We also want to seek for your support in area of enforcement of laws.

“Of course, there are laws that prescribe punishment for illegal possession of firearms and the laws are being enforced most appropriately, we will be able to fight the proliferation of small arms and light weapons.

“We are equally seeking the support and understanding of the Inspector General of Police in area of generating national data, and of course, analysis of this data for planning for the control of proliferation of small arms and light weapons.

“We know too well that the Nigerian Police force has records of recovered arms and ammunition across the federation.

“I want to seize this opportunity to make this known to the police that the center has a national data center where we collate data recovered by all agencies of governments.

“We don’t only come up with figures of recovered arms from various agencies of government, we go further to carry out investigation into the sources of these weapons,” he said.

Kokumo said the centre was more interested in knowing the source of the guns that the criminals used to commit crimes, urging the police to always involve the centre whenever its investigators come in contact with small arms in the course of their investigation.

According to him, the centre has the capacity to trace the company or manufacturer of weapons and to further trace to whom such weapons were sold by the manufacturing company.

The Coordinator commended the police for the support it had extended to the centre since its creation in 2021 in the area of manpower enforcement supports.

He said the police had assisted the centre to nab some individuals that had been undermining the powers and responsibilities of the centre.

In his response, the Inspector -General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, said the police had no choice than to continue to work with NCCSALW to deliver on its mandate.

Egbetokun assured the coordinator of the commitment of the police to continue to cooperate with the center, adding that they had realised that the center played important role in curbing the incidences of violent crime in Nigeria.

“We all know that violent crimes in Nigeria is being driven by the proliferation of small arms and light weapons.

“It is the result of illicit transaction in arms and light weapons that is actually aiding banditry, kidnapping, armed robbery and even terrorism.

“So your center has a big role to play and I want to assure you that the police will continue to support you in the areas of intelligence sharing, enforcement of all laws and in the areas of all operations that will lead to recovery of arms and that will also lead to tracing the sources of these arms.

“I want to assure you that you should always count on us even in the area of training.

“We will collaborate with you and I have no doubt in my mind that the relationship between the center and Nigerian police is going to improve with you as the head of the center,” he said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

    Environment
    By Fabian Ekeruche
Lagos, June 21, 2024 (NAN) The Society for Planet and Prosperity (SPP), in collaboration with the Department of Climate Change (DCC), Federal Ministry of Environment (FMOE) will launch the rating and ranking of the climate governance performance of Nigeria’s 36 states in July.

This is contained in a statement issued by Mr Wole Adegbule, Senior Policy Analyst of SPP, made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Lagos.

The statement quoted Prof. Chukwumerije Okereke, President, SPP, as saying that the project builds on the mapping of the climate change impact, policy, and action of the states, which was executed by the team last year in collaboration with the DCC and the Nigeria Governors Forum.

Okereke said the current project would provide a single rating and ranking report of the performance of the 36 states of Nigeria.

He said the rating and ranking were done based on five governance criteria, namely, climate change governance administrative structure, and the presence or absence of climate policy and action plan.

He listed others as; extent of climate change project implementation; extent of incorporation of climate finance in state budgets; and online visibility of state’ climate activities.

According to him, the ranking and rating exercise is based on the responses provided by the states commissioners, permanent secretaries, and climate desk officers across the 36 states and extensive independent verification done by the research team and the Department of Climate Change staff.

He expressed confidence that the rating and ranking exercise would raise awareness of climate in the states.
He added that it would create an atmosphere of positive competition and a race to the top among the states.

Okereke stated that the states with the highest ranking scores would be recognised during the report’s launch, expected to be held in the last week of July.

The statement also quoted Mahmud Adam Kambari, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, as expressing delight at the official launch of the Subnational Coordination Meeting on Climate Change.

Kambari noted that climate change is a major emergency and one of the most pressing issues in the country.

He said that the conference would strengthen the synergy between national and subnational actors in order to achieve better climate governance in the country in line with the Transformative Agenda of the President.

He described subnational climate change officers as key personnel in the fight against climate change, given their role in translating global climate goals into concrete actions and policies that resonate at the local level.

The statement quoted Dr Iniobong Abiola-Awe, the Director of the Department of Climate Change, as saying that the initiative would help in tackling climate change challenges.

Abiola-Awe listed the objectives to include, improving collaboration and knowledge sharing among Subnational Climate Change Desk Officers, promoting effective climate change action at the subnational level, and targeted training and capacity building of the desk officers.

She urged climate change desk officers to be responsive and on time at all meetings, as they were expected to attend and offer updates on climate change initiatives, successes, problems, and lessons learned in their respective regions during the monthly sessions. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

  • Rivers Reps caucus disowns purported leader, spokesperson

    Caucus

    By Femi Ogunshola

Abuja, June 21, 2024(NAN) The Rivers caucus in the House of Representatives has disowned one of its members, Rep. Dumnamene Deekor as its leader and spokesman, saying he was never instructed to speak on behalf of the caucus.

Rep. Awaji-Inombek Abiante, Leader of the Rivers Caucus in the house, in a statement in Abuja on Friday, dismissed a statement credited to the lawmaker.

The statement had called for sanction of the coordinator of the G-60 Lawmakers, Rep. Ikenga Ugochinyere.

Abiante said the leadership of the Rivers caucus in the house had always been based on seniority.

He added that a second term lawmaker could not lead the caucus when there are more senior lawmakers.

He explained that as a lawmaker, Deekor is aware of the fact that every member had the right to comment on any issue affecting any part of the country.

This, he said,  was because they had sworn to defend the integrity of Nigeria.

“The Rivers caucus in the house of representatives read with dismay,  a statement purportedly issued by the member, representing Khana/Gokana Federal Constituency, Deekor.

“The statement called for the discipline of the Coordinator of the G-60 Lawmakers in the Green Chamber,  Ugochinyere over his position on vexed issues in the polity.

“We refused to collectively accede to Deekor’s self serving stands as he has never been elected by the Rivers caucus to speak on our behalf.”

He said that Deekor being a second term lawmaker,  could not have arrogated to himself, the position of caucus leader in the midst of third and fourth term lawmakers.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
