The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that gunmen had invaded the residence of Chief Cornwell Ihunwo, the Paramount Ruler of Rumu-Elechi, Nkpolu Orowurokwo around 8 p.m. on Saturday.
NAN also reports that the gunmen had invaded the place with the intention of abducting the traditional ruler but could not find him.
The hoodlums then took the royal father’s police orderly and driver at gunpoint to an undisclosed location.
Spokesperson for the police command, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, said in a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Sunday that the command’s tactical team had been deployed to rescue the victims.
“The Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Rilwan, has ordered the swift arrest of the perpetrators to face the full wrath of the law.
“The Octopus Strike Force unit has already commenced a full-scale investigation to ensure the victims regain their freedom unhurt,” she stated.
Iringe-Koko said that Disu had visited the scene of the abduction for an on-the-spot assessment.
Chief Security Officer (CSO) of Nkpolu Orowurokwo community, Godstime Ihunwo, told newsmen that the traditional ruler was unharmed during the incident.
“At about 9 p.m. on Saturday, I received a call regarding HRM Ihunwo’s abduction. I immediately rushed to his house on Eagle Island, where I met him.
“Chief Ihunwo told me that the gunmen had taken away his driver and police orderly,” he said.
NAN gathered that Ihunwo is the younger brother of Victor Ihunwo, a former Chairman of Port Harcourt City Local Government Council. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Staff of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) with the Resident Chaplain, National Christian Centre(NCC) Rev. Mike Agbon Drugs
By Ibironke Ariyo
Abuja, June 23, 2024 (NAN) The Chairman, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) retired, Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa has urged young people to stay away from illicit drugs and have focus as leaders of tomorrow.
Marwa said this during a thanksgiving service at the National Christian Centre (NCC), in commemoration of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking or World Drug Day (WDD), on Sunday in Abuja.
The 2024 WDD is themed, “Evidence is Clear; Invest in Prevention”.
He said that the theme was timely, adding that the NDLEA was doing its best in preventing drug abuse and illicit trafficking across the country.
Marwa, who was represented by the agency’s Secretary, Mr Shadrach Haruna, said the 2024 WDD main message was prevention.
According to him, youths need to say no to drug abuse. And this is where prevention comes in.
“There is nothing good that comes out of illicit drugs. It destroys you as a person; it destroys your family and your communities.
“Youths need to stop taking illicit drugs, not to yield to peer pressure and not to think that drug is the coolest thing to do.
“This is because if you go into drugs, you ruin your future.
“That is why prevention is the ultimate thing for this year. We should all invest in prevention because if you prevent people from going into drugs, it will help.
“The country is for the youths and they are the leaders of tomorrow. That’s why we want them to shun drugs and have a focus,”he said.
Marwa said that the NDLEA was doing a lot to invest in prevention, adding that the agency believed in carrying everyone along including the Church, communities and families, among others.
He said the agency had always depended on God to lead.
He emphasised that the Church and the Mosque were involved as part of ways to carry the messages of ensuring that people shun drugs.
“If we’re able to invest in intervention, I think we will save so many lives. We know how many lives have been destroyed by drugs,”he said.
Marwa encouraged officers and men who have been on the field, working hard not to be discouraged.
He also encouraged them not to fear anyone saying: “if you’re working for a good cause, nothing will affect you”.
Rev. Mike Agbon, Resident Chaplain, National Christian Centre (NCC), said that religious bodies needed to be able to play a significant role in the area of sensitisation.
Agbon said there was also the need to introduce a spiritual approach to dealing with rehabilitation of drug addicts.
According to him, whether we like it or not, drug addiction in our nation is growing to an epidemic proportion and we need to be holistic in dealing with it.
“The NDLEA is doing a laudable job in dealing with the drugs, cartels and arrests of all the barons.
“The Church needs to rise to the occasion.
“We need to be able to rehabilitate most of the drug addicts and get them back into society.
“I believe that the spiritual approach to it will make a difference because I believe that drug addiction is a spiritual thing,”he said.
The cleric, therefore, urged the NDLEA to take time to look at the need to be able to incorporate the Church, so that there could be synergy, especially in the areas of rehabilitation.
He said that most of the Pastors trained as counselors, could help in the area of guardians and counseling.
“We need to come to that level of synergy and deal with this issue. We must all have our hands on deck.
“We must as much as possible, work together. It’s only that synergy that can solve or put a halt to the alarming proportion or rise in drug addiction in our society, “he said.(NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Oyo health workers to begin 7-day warning strike Monday
Strike
By Chidinma Ewunonu-Aluko
Ibadan, June 23, 2024 (NAN) Medical and health workers in Oyo State will, on Monday, begin a seven-day warning strike to press home their demands, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.
President of the state chapter of Medical and Health Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MHWUN), Mr John Fabunmi, disclosed this to NAN in Ibadan on Sunday.
Fabunmi said that the warning strike would be observed by members of the union in all the health institutions across the state, including those in the ministries, departments and local government councils.
He said that the industrial action had become imperative in order to press home their demands.
The labour leader said that the union had reminded the state government of its grievances several times, but that nothing had been done to address their demands.
“Part of the union’s demands is that the new hazard allowance in the state be spread to cover all other health workers in the state, and not only those working in the hospitals.
“Another demand is that some of our members removed from the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) be returned and those who have not been placed on the CONHESS be included.
“We wish to let Gov. Seyi Makinde know that up till now, nothing has been done to address these demands, even after we had given the state government a 14-day ultimatum,” he said.
Fabunmi said that the 14-day ultimatum elapsed on June 21, adding that up till now, nothing had been heard from the government.
“In view of the present situation and the agitations from our members, the union has, therefore, resolved to embark on a seven-day warning strike to further call the attention of the government to the need to attend to our agitations.
“Our members in all the health institutions, ministries and local governments will be participating in the warning strike which will commence on Monday, June 24,” he said.
NAN reports that nurses and midwives in the state had, on May 21, embarked on indefinite strike, in compliance with the directive of the state chapter of National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM).
The union, through its state Chairman, Adeyemi Samuel, had cited failure of the state government to address its demands as the reason for calling for the strike.
NAN also reports that the industrial action embarked on the nurses and midwives had been taking its toll on the health sector, as the usual boisterous nature in most of the hospitals in the state had disappeared. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Cholera
By Idris Olukoya
Lagos State, June 23, 2024 (NAN) Mr Akeem Olaewe, Director, Environmental Health in the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, has urged residents of the state to heed the directive, control and prevention measures by government to curtail the spread of cholera.
Olaewe said this while addressing newsmen on Sunday, during the decontamination and fumigation of hostels in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Orientation Camp, Iyana-Ipaja, Lagos.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the intervention is in preparation toward the NYSC 2024 Batch ‘B’ Stream 1 Orientation Course.
He said that the government through the Ministry had embarked on sensitisation and public awareness campaign across the state.
He said that residents had been alerted and urged to be wary of the outbreak of cholera in some parts of the state.
He urged everyone to embrace wholesome hygienic practices.
Olaewe said that all practices such as open defecation, drinking untreated water from unclean sources, improper disposal of refuse and washing of hands without soap must be stopped.
According to him, this is because cholera only thrives in unhygienic conditions.
He appealed to members of the public to ensure that proper toilet facilities are provided in residences and when people are outdoor, public or mobile toilets toilets must be used.
Olaewe also urged residents to properly bag and dispose of their refuse through Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) approved PSP operators, to prevent flies from feasting on the wastes.
He listed some of the measures put in place for public awareness and campaign on cholera prevention to include door to door sensitisation around neighbourhoods and estates by environmental health officers.
Others are public awareness campaigns to markets, schools, NYSC camps, public places, police barracks, and motor parks among others.
The environmental health officer said that awareness campaigns are also being stepped up in the mass media through jingles in English, Yoruba and Pidgin, to drive the message to the hinterlands.(NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

NLC kicks against decentralisation of minimum wage negotiations
Wage
By Olatunde Ajayi
Ibadan, June 23, 2024 (NAN) Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has kicked against the call by some politicians for decentralised minimum wage negotiations.Secretary of NLC in Oyo State, Mr Adebayo Aribatise, in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Ibadan, said that decentralising minimum wage negotiations would put workers in some states at a disadvantage.
NAN reports that some politicians had, of recent, called for decentralised minimum wage negotiations.
One of them, Dr Kayode Fayemi, stressed the need for allowing states to conduct wage negotiations with their labour unions, separate from that of the Federal Government.
Fayemi, a former Governor of Ekiti, said that the position of Nigerian Governors’ Forum, of which he was once the chairman, was that states should be allowed to have negotiations with their labour unions, as ‘fingers are not equal’.
Explaining the broader implications of a centralised minimum wage, the former governor noted that only a small percentage of the population benefits directly from minimum wage negotiations. However, Aribatise frowned at decentralising minimum wage negotiations, saying that it was not ideal for the country.
He noted that some states in the country had not yet fully implemented the old N30,000 minimum wage despite the efforts put in place by NLC at the national and state levels.
Besides, the labour leader said that some governors would abuse the privilege if they were allowed to negotiate minimum wage with their states’ workforce.
“The fact remains that the law binds states to pay national minimum wage. It is expected that the federal government will continue to set the minimum wage. If not, some governors will continue to do as they like.
“Some governors will bastardise the agreement if we allow it and junior workers will continue to earn nothing worthwhile,” he said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Akure,June 23,2024 (NAN) National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS) has appealed to the Federal Government and Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) to find common grounds to prevent disruption in the academic calendar. The NANS Senate President, Mr Henry Okunomo, stated this on Sunday in Akure at a news briefing.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that ASUU had issued a three-week ultimatum to the Federal Government over some outstanding demands.
According to Okunomo, the association is appealing to the Federal Government to take immediate and decisive action to prevent disruption in the educational sector by preventing any strike.
He also urged President Bola Tinubu to allocate sufficient resources to the educational sector to improve infrastructure, provide necessary teaching aids, and ensure timely payment of salaries and benefits to lecturers.
He said that establishing a continuous platform for dialogue between the government, university administrators and lecturers to address grievances before escalation was important to prevent academic disruption.
“We are all acutely aware of the recurring disruptions caused by strikes in our universities.
“These strikes, often as a result of unresolved issues between university lecturers and the government, have profound and far reaching consequences on the educational journey of countless students.
“It is with a heavy heart and a determined spirit that I address this pressing issue today, appealing to the government to take immediate and effective steps to prevent our lecturers resorting to another strike.
“We, the students, are the primary stakeholders in this situation. Our voices, hopes, and futures hang in the balance.
“We are counting on the government to act decisively and with a sense of urgency to prevent the devastating impact of another strike.
“We appeal to our lecturers to also embrace dialogue and shift ground where necessary to avoid collapse of the education system,” he said.
Okunomo concluded that it would be disastrous for university lecturers to shut down the universities with an industrial action when the country is battling economic hardship. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Bringing succour to widows through empowerment, right policy actions
Bringing succour to widows through empowerment, right policy actions
By Abiemwense Moru, News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)
In recognition of the challenges of widowhood, the United Nations set aside June 23 as the International Widows’ Day. Through resolution A/RES/65/189 the UN, since 2011, has celebrated widows in appreciated of the obstacles and challenges they face.
“Despite the fact that there are more than 258 million widows around the world, widows have historically been left unseen, unsupported, and unmeasured in our societies’’, the UN said in a report to mark 2024 edition of the Day.
Widows in Africa are faced with heavy burdens placed on their shoulder after the demise of their husbands.
These burdens do not only come as the trauma of losing their spouses but include those imposed on them by some relatives of the deceased resulting in maltreatment and lack of care.
Following the demise of their husbands, most widows abruptly become the bread winners, a task which many of them find excruciatingly difficult to cope with.
Some even become poor because they are deprived of inheriting property left behind by the departed husbands.
Because they have lost their breadwinners, it becomes important to equip the widows with life skills that can help them earn some money as they try to fill the gap left behind by their late husbands.
Whether in rural or in urban areas the challenges faced by widows are enormous, and require concerted efforts by stakeholders to address. Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) have been in the forefront in that regard.
For instance Rasaq Okulaja Empowerment Initiative and Helpline Social Support Initiative, according to reports, have empowered 60 widows with self-sustaining skills in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
The widows were trained on tie and dye, soap, turban and snacks making among other skills, during a second memorial empowerment and exhibition programme by the NGOs in Abuja.
The President of Helpline Social Support Initiative, Dr Jumai Ahmadu, said the empowerment is also to give the widows and young girls an opportunity to be a better version of themselves.
She advised the beneficiaries not to be ashamed of what they were doing to support themselves financially.
To get the full benefits of the acquired skills, Ahmadu advised the widows to group themselves into clusters to enable them share facilities, access financial support and organise step down trainings to other vulnerable groups.
“Try to be a better version of yourself and improve yourself at all times and form clusters so that you can work as a team and easily connect with customers.
“I promise that next year, we will expand this exhibition and take it to the Old Parade Ground, Garki to accommodate more participants,” she said.
Similarly, another NGO, Women at the Well of Living Water Foundation, Adamawa chapter, empowered 10 widows and struggling families with foodstuff to alleviate hunger.
Jessica Edmund, the Founder of the NGO said during the distribution of the items in Yola, that the move was to alleviate the sufferings of the beneficiaries, following the current inflation in prices of food items.
Edmund, who was represented by Kate Ransom-Stephen, the Adamawa Coordinator of the Foundation, said: “today, we are here to help people with foodstuff and teach them how to catch fish to succeed in life.
“Knowing that the situation is hard that is why we are here to cushion the effects of hunger among our people.”
In Borno, Gov. Babagana Zulum supervised the distribution of N250 million to no fewer than 25,000 widows and vulnerable women through the Borno Renaissance Microfinance Bank in Gwoza Local Government Area of the state.
The distribution took place in four centres, including the Central Stadium, Mega Primary School, Government Secondary School and Government Day Secondary School, all in Gwoza town.
Zulum said that the distribution was to support women who were victims of the Boko Haram insurgents, some of whom had lost their husbands due to the crisis.
“No fewer than 25,000 women benefited from today’s distribution exercise; each of them received N10,000 through the microfinance Bank; we have facilitated the opening of Bank accounts to them to drive financial inclusion.
”Gradually, we intend to cover all the 27 Local Government Areas and ensure that a sizable number of the population have bank accounts,” Zulum said.
Also, to address the plight of widows in Ebonyi, Gov. Francis Nwifuru reiterated that his administration would continue to prioritise the welfare of the elderly people and widows in the state.
Nwifuru gave the assurance at the Christian Ecumenical Centre, Abakaliki, during the elders and widows party in Abakaliki.
The governor reiterated his stance to better the lots of people, especially the elders, widows and other less privileged ones.
The governor acknowledged the current economic realities, its effects on the widows and elderly and pledged an upward review of their welfare.
“I assure you that I am with you, I am for you and I will work for you.”
However, the Customs Officers Wives Association (COWA), Ogun 1 Command Chapter, has under taken steps to address the immediate needs of some widows in the state.
Mrs Grace Ogunnesan, the Acting Chairperson of COWA, said during the distribution of food items Idiroko, Ogun, that association was committed to ameliorating the plight of widows in their midst.
Faith-based organisations are also central in mitigating the plight of widows.
Very Rev. Fr. Andrew Obinyan, advises that rather than put widows in difficult situations through socio-cultural practices, the society should seeks ways of mitigating their daily challenges.
Obinyan, the Parish Priest of St. Francis Catholic Church, Ekewan road, Benin, spoke during the distribution of money, cloths and food items to widows and indigent parishioners.
Addressing the problems of widows and issues surrounding widowhood requires more than handouts to those affected.
It requires efforts that aimed at removing violation of rights of widows such as right to the assets of their late husband and in some instances, lack of access to their children.
This calls for the enactment and implementation of the laws that guarantees the rights of widows.
In the meantime Obinyan urges politicians to intensify efforts to provide social welfare programmes that would directly impact on the citizens and guarantee a decent standard of living in the state.
He advised leaders and governments at all levels not to focus only on physical infrastructure, but to ensure a corresponding investment in poverty reduction and youth empowerment.
“Government needs to build and revamp ailing industries in agriculture, textile, health, housing, recreation, waste management and recycling to boost job opportunities.
“Good governance also encompasses policies that promote food security and farmers interest,” he said.
It is believed that such actions would properly equip women with the required skills and wealth to meet the challenges of widowhood in the face of odds that test their resilience. (NANFeatures)
