Lagos, June 29, 2024 (NAN) Member nations have been enjoined to take advantage of the Olympic family principles and ensure that the world enjoyed an unforgettable celebration of sports achievements at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
The President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Thomas Bach, said this in an address at the 2024 Olympic Day celebration in Lagos.
Olumide Oyedeji, President of the Nigerian Olympians Association (NOA) delivered Bach’s speech on Saturday at the National Stadium, Lagos.
Oyedeji also represented the President Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), Habu Gumel, at the occasion.
The IOC president also described this year’s Olympic Day Celebration as a ‘Special One’ as it coincided with the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
According to him, Paris 2024 also offers athletes the platform to inspire the world with the Olympic motto of togetherness.
”This year’s Olympic Day is a very special one, taking place just ahead of the Olympic Games Paris 2024.
”With the excitement building, the athletes, the fans, the entire Olympic community around the world – all of us- we are all looking forward to a new era of Olympic Games, younger, more inclusive, more urbane, more sustainable.
”It is the very first Olympic Games with full gender parity. The very first Olympic Games fully in line with our Olympic Agenda.
”The Olympic Games always build bridges and bring people together in peace and solidarity,” he said.
He further said, ”This is the beauty of sport; it inspires us to move, it brings out the best in us, it keeps us healthy, and it brings us all together – as friends and as a community, wherever we are and whichever way we choose to move.”
The IOC president said that he was looking forward, ‘together with all of you, to the Olympic Games Paris 2024, for an unforgettable celebration of the joy of sport, for a celebration of our shared humanity – for a celebration of peace!.’
Also speaking at the event, the 1996 Olympic Games gold medalist, Chioma Ajunwa, said that the Olympic Day Celebration was s a great thing for lovers of sports.
She said that this year’s celebration was worth celebrating as it occurred in an Olympic Games year.
”It means a lot for all Nigerians that know what sport is all about, a market woman in the street may not know, but some of us that know what sport is all about, know that today is a great day in the Olympic family, and it is worth doing it because this year is Olympic year.
”Even if we have not been doing it in the past, I think it’s a great thing doing it this year, because we’re in full gear for our team moving to Paris.
”We know that this year is going to be like 1996. We’ve a lot of athletes that are really shaking the world,,” she said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that apart from Lagos, this year’s Olympic Day Celebration, was also celebrated simultaneously in Bayelsa, Ondo, Edo, Gombe, Kogi and Ebonyi states.
It was also celebrated in Taraba, Plateau, Kwara, Osun, Delta, Imo and Adamawa states.
The Lagos event was spiced with the demonstration sports including boxing, tug-of-war, Muay Thai, skating and jogging by Joggers Fitness Club, Heritage Dancers as well as Aerobics display by Cheerladies. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Osogbo , June 29, 2024 (NAN) The Osun Mastermind, an Non Governmental Organisation (NGO), has appealed to the state government to be equitable and fair in distribution of fertilizer palliatives to farmers in the state.
The Group’s Executive Director, Prof. Wasiu Oyedokun-Alli , made the appeal on Saturday in Osogbo.
Oyedokun-Alli said the first batch of fertilizer palliatives amounting to 11 trucks from the Federal Government had arrived the state capital for distribution to farmers in the state .
He commended the FG’s initiative being implemented by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) through its anchors borrowers to provide farmers fertilizers to boost food security in the country.
” I want to say that the first batch of fertilizer palliatives amounting to 11 trucks out of the 30 trucks from the Federal Government is in the state.
” The need for equitable and fair distribution of these fertilizers to farmers cannot be overemphasized.

” Public servants, who are saddled with the responsibility of administering the palliative scheme must indeed share to the target segment of the populace instead of favoring their cronies.
” Fertilizer palliative is designed to mitigate the hardship petroleum subsidy removal meted on Nigerians and to provide succor to the downtrodden,” the director said.
Oyedokun-Alli, implored the FG to constitute a monitoring team to monitor what has been pushed out to its sub-nationals.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Benin, June 29, 2024 (NAN) The Initiative for Advancement of the Albinism Cause (INAAC) on Saturday offered free skin and eye care services to more than 100 persons with albinism in Edo.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the free healthcare service was organised to commemorate the 2024 International Albinism Awareness Day.
In her address, Founder and Executive Director of the initiative, Miss Joy Odigie, said the event was planned to bring the community together in a significant and impactful way.
According to her, the 2024 International Albinism Awareness Day has the theme, “10 Years of Collective Progress” and celebrates the shared commitment and relentless efforts over the past decade to improve the lives of persons with albinism.
The initiative, Odigie said, started to subsidise skin cancer surgeries for persons with albinism due to the increasing burden effect of the disease.
“Climate change has led to rising temperatures and heat waves, negatively affecting the skin of people with albinism in Nigeria.
“We are now recording increasing cases of skin tumors and cancers, especially among rural dwellers and poor persons with albinism who lack access to sunscreen lotions, skin checks, and services,” Odigie said.
She said that since the NGO introduced the skin cancer surgeries’ subsidy two years ago, about four individuals had benefited, with four more waiting in line.
“We partner with a hospital in Benin to run the subsidised skin tumors and cancer surgeries.
“The hospital offers a 20 per cent to 30 per cent discount to patients, while the NGO covers an additional 30 per cent to 40 per cent of the remaining medical bills,” she said.
The founder, however, announced a plan to launch skin and eye trust foundation for persons with albinism to provide critical resources to address their unique challenges.

According to her, these challenges range from low vision to skin cancers with the aim of enhancing quality life for this vulnerable set of people.
“However, for this fund to be successful, we need the support of government and non-governmental actors, organisations and other partners.
“Your contributions and involvement will be vital in ensuring that this fund can make a meaningful impact.
“Your support and commitment exemplify the spirit of community and solidarity that drives our mission,” said Odigie.
Taking the beneficiaries on tips for healthy life, Dr Aisha Sokunbi warned them against exposure to sunlight which could damage their skin.
Sokunbi, a Dermatologist, urged governments and well-meaning individuals to always help reduce the burden on this group due to their skin type.

Lagos, June 29, 2024 (NAN) MTN Nigeria on Saturday announced the construction of its West African largest data centre, a facility with a 1,500-rack and Tier 4 data centre within the country.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that a Tier 4 data centre is built to be completely fault-tolerant, has redundancy for every component and an expected uptime of 99.995 per cent.
This means it can withstand a wide range of potential disruptions and offers the most reliable infrastructure.
The Chief Technical Officer, MTN, Mr Mohammed Rufai, told newsmen in Lagos that construction of the data centre was a move to enhance Nigeria’s digital infrastructure.
Rufai said that the data centre was set to play a pivotal role in meeting the growing data demands and digital needs of businesses and consumers across the country.
He said that the new data centre would support MTN’s infrastructure and serve as a vital resource for businesses across Nigeria.
“Businesses that require data centre capacity can now forgo maintaining their server rooms.
‘’Our facility will provide the space and services needed, enabling companies to digitalise their operations and improve efficiency.
‘’The data centre will also enhance the delivery of content from major tech companies like Meta and Google, bringing content closer to Nigerian users and improving access speeds,’’ he said.
According to him, this local hosting of content will significantly boost user experience and network efficiency.
Rufai highlighted the critical need for expanded data processing capabilities, driven by significant growth in data usage and the emergence of new services.
“We see a high demand in the market, with data usage growing significantly.
“And in order to cater to demand and prepare for future growth, MTN is expanding and modernising its data centre capacity,” the MTN official said.
According to him, the project is not just a technological investment but also a catalyst for economic growth.
Rufai said by providing scalable and adaptable infrastructure, it would enable businesses, particularly Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), to leverage cloud services and other digital solutions.
He stressed that this would, in turn, drive innovation, efficiency, and competitiveness across various sectors of the economy.
He emphasised MTN’s readiness to partner with startups and MSMEs, offering numerous opportunities for collaboration, particularly in cloud services.
According to him, aligned with MTN’s Ambition 2025 strategy, the data centre signals the company’s commitment to Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) goals.
He said that the facility would eventually utilise efficient cooling systems and a combination of traditional energy sources, gas and renewable energy.
Rufai stressed the importance of these energy measures, saying it would significantly reduce its carbon footprint.
According to him, up to 60 per cent of the power consumption of a typical data centre in our clime is for cooling, MTN’s highly efficient systems will ensure it meets the sustainability targets.
The MTN official added that as Nigeria’s digital landscape advanced, the new data centre marked a significant milestone.

Akure,June 29,2024 (NAN) Gov. Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo said on Saturday that plans were on to construct a brand new stadium in the state to help nurture talents who would represent the state and the country at international competitions.
Aiyedatiwa made this known in his speech at an event to commemorate the 2024 Olympic Day Run held at the Ondo State Sports Complex, Akure.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports the event featuring Olympians, sports men and women started from the Government House and terminated at the state sports complex.
The governor, who was represented by his deputy, Mr Olayide Adelam, said efforts were in top gear to ensure that work commenced at the site of the new stadium to ease the pressure placed on the old stadium.
He promised that the state would continue to support the objectives of the Olympic celebration which among others was to promote national unity and grassroots sports development in the country.
“Efforts are on to award the contract of the new stadium at Araromi in Akure to curb the over stretching of facilities at the Ondo State Sports Complex and to enhance sports development in the state.
“The contract for the upgrading of Akure township stadium has been awarded by the state government to a reputable contractor to make the facilities meet international standards for the use of the sports loving people of Ondo state.
“Other mini stadia in Ondo, Ikare and Ile Oluji will also be awarded soon to meet the yearnings and aspirations of the people.
“Our administration will continue to give necessary priority to sports,” he said.
Aiyedatiwa said his administration was determined to give the state a befitting stadium and that he would prioritise sports and also pay attention to the welfare of athletes.
He described sports as a good avenue for social interaction and integration amongst youths.
“Sports is very dear to our hearts in Ondo and our administration will not relent in its efforts to engage the people in sporting activities for health benefits and as a chosen career where we gainfully employ the youth,” he said.
In his welcome address, Mr Saka Ogunleye, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, said the sustainability of the event was a clear indication that sport remained a veritable instrument for the promotion of global peace.
“The extension of the event to Ondo State is a clear indication that sports promote global peace.
“We are committed to prioritise sports and engage the youths in a meaningful way through sporting activities. Sports facilities are upgraded all over the state.
“Our target is to ensure that our athletes are able to compete with their counterparts outside the state and win laurels and go further to thereby represent Nigeria in international competitions.”
The representative of the Nigeria Olympic Committee, Mr Sylvester Ikuejamoye, in his remarks, noted that sporting activities keep the mind and body strong.

Abuja, June 29, 2024 (NAN) The Federal Government in collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and development partners, have emphasised the critical need to strengthen the social protection system to address growing poverty.
This is contained in a communiqué jointly endorsed by UNICEF Representative, Ms. Cristian Munduate, EU Ambassador in Nigeria, Ms. Samuela Isopi, and Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of The Economy, Mr Wale Edun.
The communiqué was issued in Abuja on Saturday at the end of the 3rd Edition of the Social Protection Cross Learning Summit.
According to the communiqué, Nigeria, the most populous country in Africa, faces significant challenges in human capital development, and deprivations in health, education, nutrition, water, hygiene, sanitation, and child protection.
It noted that the situation underscored the urgency for comprehensive and effective social protection strategies.
“In response to these challenges, the federal government introduced a cash transfer programme, providing N25,000 over a three-month period to poor and vulnerable households.
“This initiative aims to alleviate immediate economic pressures and mitigate the socio-economic impact of recent economic reforms.
“Our goal is to create a comprehensive support network that addresses the multifaceted needs of children and families, ultimately leading to improved outcomes in health, education, and overall well-being.
“We must work together to bridge gaps and strengthen coordination,” the communiqué said
Earlier in an address, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of Economy, Edun, emphasised the importance of integrated social protection systems.
Edun said the government was committed to ensure access to social protection for all and remove the barriers that people face in accessing these services.
“As a result, the government is engaged to implement with the support from relevant stakeholders, including the Social Protection Development Partner Group, the agreed action points from the summit,” he said.
Also, UNICEF Representative in Nigeria, Munduate, on behalf of the Social Protection Development Partners Group, said that social protection was crucial in realising the rights of every child.
She said that Child-sensitive social protection was key to ensure that every child reached his or her full potential.
“There is a need to ensure stronger linkages between social protection and essential social services with focus on health, education, and nutrition.
“In of spite advancements, social protection coverage remains low, with only seven per cent of children covered.
“Coordination mechanisms are weak, leading to fragmentation and inefficiency.
“Therefore, the summit aims to generate actionable insights and foster collaboration among key players to enhance coverage, coordination, and financing of social protection interventions,” she said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

D-G charges TAC volunteers to uphold discipline, patriotism in S’Leone

Abuja, June 29, 2024 (NAN) Dr Yusuf Yakub, the Director-General, Directorate of Technical Aid Corps (DTAC), has urged the Technical Aid Corps (TAC) volunteers, deployed to Sierra Leone to uphold discipline and behave as patriotic citizens.
Yakub gave the advice in Abuja on Saturday at a deployment exercise for 18 TAC volunteers to be sent to Sierra Leone.
He said that the deployment was in line with the mandate of the directorate to bridge the educational gap in Africa, Caribbean and the Pacific (ACP) countries.
The D-G lauded the TAC volunteers for deciding to serve humanity and their country by volunteering to give their professional service to other African countries.
According to him, the volunteers are to serve humanity and their fellow African country that is in need of professionals to bridge the educational gap.
“We also send volunteers to ACP countries to bridge the educational gaps in these countries as soft power diplomacy.
“Nigeria has been deploying TAC volunteers for the past 37 years. So, as you go there, we expect you to conduct yourselves and be good ambassadors of this great country Nigeria.
“That is why you are wearing the Nigerian colours as a symbols of respect and honour. So, be of good behaviour, uphold our integrity by bringing us a good name to our country.
“This is a very strong foreign policy of the Nigeria government which we use to deploy soft power diplomacy through technical aid to our brothers in the ACP countries.
“So, Nigeria as one of the super powers among the community of nations has introduced this very important foreign policy for the past 37 years and has been sustaining it.
“Through foreign policy instrument, we have developed friendship with so many countries of the world which is of great importance to our dear country Nigeria,’’ he said.
Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), some of the volunteers said the initiative of the Nigerian government to render soft power diplomacy to other African countries was a commendable one.
Mr Benham Batari, a Nurse, and Ukoma Nnoma, a Medical Doctor, expressed readiness to make Nigeria proud by being good ambassadors while rendering professional expertise in that country.
NAN reports that the TAC volunteers went through a selection process from over 10,000 entries made from various medical fields ranging from doctors, nurses and researchers, amongst others, to be volunteers.
After the exercise, 18 qualified TAC volunteers, who are professional practitioners, were selected to render their service to humanity to Sierra Leone.
Other previously sent were 11 to the Gambia, and 11 to Uganda from engineering and Academics fields. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Lagos, June 29, 2024 (NAN) Mr Sunday Anani Initiative, a Non-Governmental Organisation has organised outreaches to schools in Lagos State to sensitise youths on the dangers of drug abuse, addiction and dropping out-of-school.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the outreaches were held from June 20 to June 28, across seven public secondary schools, all under Education District 6 in Lagos State.
The schools are Okota Junior Secondary School; Okota Senior High School; Ajumoni Junior Grammar School; Okota Senior Secondary School; Ajumoni Senior Grammar School; Ijeshatedo Junior Grammar and Ire Akari Junior Grammar School.
Sunday Anani, Founder of the NGO, told NAN that the outreach, which had the theme, “Substance Use Disorders: Treatment and Recovery”, was to educate the students on the gains of not abusing drugs.

Anani said that there was a need to continuously create awareness and promote prevention of drug abuse, addiction and dropping out-of-school to students.
He said that it would save them from falling victims as many others had, in the past.
According to him, investing in sensitisation and prevention outreaches are the keys that can educate youths of today about the danger and negative effects of drug abuse.
He noted that drug abuse had become a national pandemic, adding that, “Most young people become victims of drug abuse due to pressure from friends or peer groups.
“This has led many of them to lose their minds and are, therefore, unable to stay in school.
“Dropping out of school as a result of drug abuse further compounds their woes as they get into the society to become further addicted, as they are ignorant and lack the knowledge to stay off drugs.
“Hence, the idea behind the outreach. Education and awareness are the measures needed to make youths knowledgeable to stay disciplined and keep off drug abuse that will mar their future or prevent them from attaining their potentials.” he said.
Anani noted that the sensitisation sessions touched on factors that increase risk for substance use or misuse, common drug classifications people abuse and their street names.
According to him, the sessions also covers addiction, Popamine and its effects, effects of substance use, risks of substance use and disorders, screening for substance use disorders and substance use disorder treatments.
“These drugs commonly abused by young and old people alike include stimulants, depressants, hallucinogens, alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, heroin, opiods, amongst others.
“You must stay away from them completely. They are not good for you,” he stressed.
The founder assured that there would be another round of the outreaches to some other education districts, so they could also benefit from the programme approved by the Lagos State Government through the Education District. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Abuja, June 29, 2024 (NAN) The President, Defence and Police Officers Wives Association (DEPOWA), Mrs Oghogho Musa, has called for collaborative efforts towards addressing the menace of sexual exploitation and abuse, especially in military barracks.
Musa made the call at a seminar on “Preventing Sexual Exploitation and Abuse” to mark her one year in office as the 15^th President of DEPOWA, on Saturday in Abuja.
She said that the menace of sexual exploitation and abuse was prevalent in the society, adding that many occurrences have gone unreported without exemption of barracks community and its environs.
According to her, the event was an opportunity to discuss the issue and echoed the voice of Antonio Guterres, the United Nations Secretary General in stating that, “Sexual Exploitation and Abuse have no place in our society”.
“We recognise the severity of the consequences and we aim to work towards reducing its prevalence within our communities and immediate environs.
“We also thought it necessary to sensitise the youth on the menace of drug abuse and how to avoid it so they can have a promising future.
“In all of these, it is important to know who you are, know what you want to achieve in life and develop some personal values that will guide you into achieving your goals,” she said.
Musa said that resource persons have been brought in, to guide barracks teenagers and youth to be able to adopt the lessons from the sessions, into their daily living and eventually attain the future they desired.
She pledged unwavering support to any victim who reports any form of sexual exploitation, or attempt to be initiated into the use of illicit substances within the barracks domain.
She called on appropriate authorities to investigate and address same, when any of the menaces was reported.
“Indeed, perpetrators ought to be held accountable,” she said.
The DEPOWA president said the event was organised to celebrate the association’s significant milestone, reflect on its achievements, acknowledge their challenges and look forward to the future.
She said the DEPOWA had in the past one year, done as much as it could in making positive impacts in the lives of women and youth, especially the vulnerable within their sphere of influence.
“As we all know, DEPOWA is the melting pot that unifies wives of serving officers’ in the Armed Forces and the Police.
“I am glad to note that we have witnessed remarkable achievements from the various spousal associations that make up DEPOWA and by God’s grace we will continue to impact lives within and outside the barracks communities in diverse ways.
“The activities of DEPOWA within the past one year have focused on adding value in the lives of women and youth, especially in the areas of healthcare, fitness, education, agriculture and skills training.
“All of these align with my vision of “Seeing Women and Girls Become Productive and Contributors to Family and Society Driven by Deep Sense of Values and Hard-Working Spirit”.
“We will not relent in our efforts to keep touching lives in ways that are necessary,” she added.
One of the resource persons, Dr Chika Anozie, said that alcohol, illicit drugs and substances abuses have their negative impact on young people.
Anozie, who delivered a paper titled, “the Risk of Teenage Drug Abuse: Prevention and Awareness”, urged youths to take charge of their environment, circle of friends, and peer pressure.
According to her, there have been 20 per cent increase in drug use in the past 10 years and that Africa will experience the largest growth in absolute numbers of drug users while four of 10 drug users in Africa will be youths by 2030.
On her part, Dr Olajumoke Jenyo, who presented a paper title, “Sexual Exploitation and Abuse: Prevention and Response”, said that two of every 10 male child have been sexually abused.
She said that more of sensitisation was required to address the menace of sexual abuse in the society, saying that more girls have been victims of such abuse unreported. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Ikorodu (Lagos State), June 29, 2024 (NAN) The Ikorodu Local Government Area in Lagos State on Saturday says it will partner with the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund (LSETF), Wecycler and Sahara Foundation on youth empowerment in the area.
Mr Wasiu Adesina, the Chairman of the council, made the commitment during the inauguration of Go Recycle hub at Ojogbe area of Ikorodu, Lagos.
Adesina appreciated the initiators of the projects for the innovation, adding that, “it is an empowerment programme that has the potential to transform lives, communities, climate and our planet,”
The council chairman in his quest to create the enabling environment, promised to embark on acquisition of 10 acres of land for large scale agricultural production and a trade fair to sell products at cheaper rate.
“Through this initiative, we empower communities and take ownership of their waste management.
“We will empower entrepreneurs to develop innovative solutions and encourage individuals to make sustainable choices.
“This idea can turn a liability into an asset, a burden into a blessing, and turning waste to wealth,” he said
Earlier, Mrs Folashade Oluyinka, representing the Wecycler, advised residents to efficiently manage their waste products since they generated tons of waste daily, from household trash to industrial byproducts.
Oluyinka advised the youths to join recycling business, as a means of livelihood through monitoring of waste materials produced, as a result of human activity to get valuable resources.
“The whole purpose of the waste management is to reduce the amount of waste that goes into landfill, while empowering the people.
“However, waste can be a catalyst for change.”
“We will also empower marginalised groups to access economic opportunities.
“We are not just empowering people to convert waste to wealth but we want to achieve other ideas.”
She said that the other ideas include; building skills and capacities, creating jobs and income streams, promoting sustainable livelihoods and reducing inequality and poverty.
Mr Seun Adeyeri, one of the youths, commended the chairman for his initiative and urged more youth to key into the re-cycling business for self-reliance. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
