Lagos, Aug., 2018 (NAN) The Lagos State Handball Association (LSHA) on Tuesday said its ongoing summer clinic and coaching classes were parts of efforts to promote the state’s advocacy for sports and education among the youth.

The LSHA immediate past chairman, Adeola Opeifa,  told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that 64 players were participating in the programme holding at the  Mobolaji Johnson Sports Centre, Rowe Park, Yaba.

Opeifa said that the players were talents discovered at the 2018 U-12/U-15 national handball championships and Lagos State Secondary Schools Handball Championships, tagged ‘OPEIFA CUP’.

He said that they were being supervised by eight seasoned coaches.

“We are using this two-in-one programme to pilot the state’s efforts at promoting sports and education.

“This is because it involves handball coaching and teaching of Mathematics and English to the players.

“A Mathematics and English teacher reports here to take the players in those subjects; they are usually the first event for the day. After that, they observe a break and commence the training proper.

“We have had two major championships in Lagos this year where the 64 players were identified and this programme is a part of events to nurture them,’’ she said.

She said that the players and officials were being kitted and given daily meal tickets as the programmes holding from Aug. 27 to Aug. 30, during which they would observe two sessions daily.

Also, Chukwuemeka Duru, the immediate past technical director of LSHA, said that there was the need to take advantage of the summer holidays to bring the newly discovered players together.

Duru said that the new player would be taken through comprehensive basics, while the old ones would be exposed to how they could master their wings and play as a team during subsequent outings.

“We are mindful of the foundation of the young talents and this has prompted this follow-up programmes because it will help them to be technically sound in their careers,’’ he said.

He added that 16 boys and 16 girls would be selected to form the state teams ahead of  the forthcoming National Youth Games (NYG) holding in Ilorin from Sept. 7 to Sept 17.

According to him, the clinic is also part of the programme to sharpen the players’ abilities and get formidable team that will represent Lagos State in the NYG.

NAN reports that the LSHA five-day programme was organised in conjunction with the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC). (NAN)
