Lagos, March 16, 2017 (NAN) A Tinubu Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, on Thursday remanded a 20-year-old labourer, Wisdom Otu, in Ikoyi Prisons for allegedly stealing cables worth N450,000.
Otu who is facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, causing damage and theft, however, pleaded guilty to the charges.
Magistrate Omolaja Kazeem ordered that the accused should be remanded in prison and adjourned the case to March 27 for a review of the facts of the case and sentencing.
The prosecutor, Insp. Philip Osijiale, had earlier told the court that the accused on March 8 at about 1:30 a.m. at Peace Estate, Oko-Ado Ajah, Lagos State, conspired with others to steal.
Osijiale said that the accused and one other at large that conspired to commit the offences are both labourers in the estate.
He said that the duo illegally entered into two uncompleted duplexes and removed the cables that were installed in them.
The prosecutor added that the security guards in the area sighted them with two-sack loads of cable and raised alarm.
“ The guards were able to catch the accused while his accomplice escaped,” he said.
Osijiale said that the offences contravened Sections 285, 342 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 285 stipulates three years’ imprisonment; Section 342 states two years’ imprisonment while 409 carries two years’ imprisonment for offenders. (NAN)
