Jos, June 28, 2017 (NAN) A Jos based Non Governmental Organisation (NGO), Girl-Child Education Mission (GEM) has called on women to embrace Information Communication Technology (ICT) for socio economic empowerment.
The Executive Director of GEM, Mrs Keturah Shammah made the call in Jos on Wednesday at a one-day training for women on “Accessing Digital benefits to Better their Llives’’.
“ This workshop, which is the fifth by this organisation in 2017, is to train women to become internationally recognised with financial reward, get to know useful online resources or tools for economic empowerment.
“The training enables women to increase their online network connecting with women from 190 countries.
“It will help them acquire skills on how to brand and monetise business using technology while maintaining security and privacy online,’’ she said.
The director said that the series of training, which began in January, was targeted at 100 women between the ages of 15 and above for the first half of 2017.
She noted that many women restricted internets benefits to only facebook and WhatsApp, while there were many sources for funding of businesses in the internet.
Shammah said GEM was partnering with organisations such as Women and the Web Alliance, Intel Corporation and World Impulse among others for the training.
The theme of the workshop is “ Women and the Web Alliance World Impulse Digital training’’.
A participant Mrs Elizabeth Inji, who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), said the workshop had enlightened her that the internet could be used for other beneficial things besides just facebook and whatsApp.
“ I know that the World Impulse Site offers opportunities for us to market businesses, get business ideas, share similar personal and business struggles with women who have accessed it,’’ she said.
Another participant, Mrs Belove Sam, a caterer said that she would use the platform to expand her business and update her skills.
“ I want to have an international market for my home-made bread and other products which I have learnt to do through this training,’’ she said.
NAN reports that GEM was established in 2007 as an intervention to reach out to girls who have been deprived of education and training opportunities.
GEM objectives include mentoring, education and economic empowerment, capacity building and entrepreneurial skills. (NAN)
