Oduwole leads national scrabble trials in Abuja

Abuja, May 19, 2017 (NAN) Olatunde Oduwole, the 2016 national scrabble champion, on Friday was leading the scores table after seven games at the ongoing National Scrabble Trials in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the trials is in prepararion for the World Championship slated for Kenya in November.

Oduwole led the scores table with an aggregate of 530 to top the results for round 10.

Wellington Jighere, the world scrabble champion, also won seven games with 110 aggregate to follow behind.

Curtis John had seven wins with -145 aggregate to be placed on number three on the table while Quickpen Ben had 6.5 wins with 353 aggregate.

One-time national champion Dennis Ikekeregor had six wins with 474 aggregate to be in fifth place.

Former African champion Nsikak Etim also had six wins with 345 aggregate to be placed sixth.

Chairman, Technical Committee of the Scrabble Federation of Nigeria, Faruq Baba-Inna, said the trials was going on well.

“What has turned out is that every day we are discovering somebody new emerging winner.

“For day one, we had Ikekeregor, Moses Peter for day two and today (Friday) I am sure we will have another winner.

“I am hoping that on the final day, which is Saturday, one of the three that we have discovered, will make it to the second round,’’ he said.

Baba-Inna said after the second round the rating would be done and those that would represent Nigeria at the world scrabble championship would be selected.

He however said al the participating athletes had so far played to expectations.(NAN)
