Unity
By David Adeoye
Ibadan, June 18, 2017(NAN) Pa Omoniyi Adigun, an octogenarian and a community leader has urged traditional rulers in the country to promote unity and intervene to address any form of agitations in their domains.
Adigun, the community leader of Ayegu in Egbeda Local Government Area of Oyo State, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan on Sunday.
Adigun, who was reacting to the quit notice issued recently by the northern youths to the Igbos to leave the North, said that traditional rulers should rise up and intervene to shelve such agitations.
He expressed concern over some unpleasant utterances among the people of various ethnic groups, saying Nigeria’s founding fathers meant well when they jointly fought for the independence of the country that became a reality in 1960.
“Those of us who witnessed the nation’s independence and the harmonious and peaceful coexistence of the entire ethnic groups at that time would never support secession of any of the groups.
“Our traditional rulers should as a matter of urgency hold series of meeting in their respective domains with those sponsoring the agitation.
“Let them know that the nation’s oneness is paramount and should not be disrupted.
“Though, there are issues but secession is not the best option, rather grievances of various ethnic groups should be resolved amicably, “the Octogenarian said.
Adigun further admonished the Federal Government not to treat the matter with levity but address the issue promptly.
He also advised government to review the 2014 Confab Report and implement key areas that could provide solution to the request of various ethnic groups.
He warned Nigerian youths to refrain from comments and utterances capable of causing disaffection among different tribes. (NAN)
