Katsina, Feb. 20, 2017 (NAN) The Director-General, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig.-Gen. Sulaiman Kazaure, says the NYSC will continue to  use sports and culture as twin instruments of  promoting  national  unity and integration.

Kazaure made the promise at the opening ceremony of North-West zonal preliminaries of the 2016 NYSC Sports and Cultural Festival on Monday in Katsina.

Represented by the NYSC Director, Community Development Service (CDS), Mrs M.P. Akuso, the NYSC boss said that  the events were aimed at promoting the country’s cultural heritage aside from being an avenue for talent-hunt in sports.

According to him,  football for males, volleyball for females, 100 and 200-metre dash for both males and females are some of the games to be competed for, adding that  dance, drama and comedy would also feature.

He urged the participants to observe fair-play in all the competitions and  eschew any form of bitterness through out the competition.

‘’I urge you to exhibit high sense of maturity and the spirit of sportsmanship throughout the period of the competitions.

‘’I also wish to remind our referees and judges that you have been chosen based on your track records of professionalism, honesty and neutrality.

‘’I expect you to justify the confidence reposed on you,’’ he said.

Gov. Aminu Masari of Katsina State, described sports as means of achieving healthy bodies and alert minds by  individuals  aiming to perform optimally.

Represented by his Special Adviser on Youth Development, Alhaji Ibrahim Khalil, Masari  said that sports provided an avenue for instilling  discipline  and  encouraging brotherliness among people from diverse backgrounds.(NAN)
