Ibadan, April 12, 2018 (NAN) The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), says it recorded a total of 25 births and 60 marriages among corps members that passed out on Thursday in Oyo State.

The state NYSC Coordinator, Ms Ifeoma Anidobi made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan on the sideline of the passing out parade for the corps members.

She said 3, 597 corps members served the state under the 2017 Batch A, B stream, out of which 2,211 of them were females.

The coordinator said 23 of the corps members were sanctioned for various offences while two would receive the Chairman Award and five would get commendation letters for outstanding performance during the service year.

Anidobi said the corps members had made valuable contributions to the development of the state, especially in education, healthcare delivery, social services and community development.

She called for upward review of the N4, 000 monthly allowance paid to corps members by the state government to conform to present realities.

The coordinator announced that the orientation course for the 2018 batch A Corps Members would commence on April 19 at the permanent orientation camp in Iseyin.

Anidobi enjoined the outgoing corps members to remain good ambassadors of the scheme and thanked all stakeholders including Oyo State Government for providing enabling environment for the corps members.

“The warm reception accorded the members and the hospitality extended by host communities inspired the corps members’ commitment and uncommon drive to serve their fatherland,” she added.

At the passing out ceremony, Gov. Abiola Ajimobi said the various community development projects undertaken by the corps members had awakened the citizens to appreciate the capacity of the youths in the task of nation building.

Ajimobi, represented by his Deputy, Chief Moses Adeyemo advised the outgoing corps members to use the entrepreneurship skills acquired during the service year to earn a living as government has no means of providing them with jobs.

“Try as much as possible to engage your hands, minds, using your creative endowments, but don’t be in a hurry to get rich, for excessive desire and crave for sudden riches and wealth portends nothing but trouble.

“The ever-loving people of Oyo state will not forget you in a long time to come, it is my fervent prayer that improvement in our economy will provide opportunities for your personal fulfilment,” he said. (NAN)
