Lagos, April 23, 2018 (NAN) Chief Perry Opara, the National Chairman of the National Unity Party (NUP), has called on the Federal Government to overhaul the nation’s security system to stem insecurity.

Opara told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Lagos that there was need for a complete overhaul of the nation’s security apparatus because of the rising spate of insecurity.

He said the lingering herdsmen-farmers crisis, the armed robbery in Offa, Kwara, and the recent attack on the Senate by suspected thugs was an indication that the security agencies were not in control.

“To confirm that there is insecurity in Nigeria, last week, five men beat more than 200 security men, entered the Senate and took away the mace, the symbol of authority in democracy.

“What they took away was not only the symbol of authority in the Senate; the National Assembly is the symbol of democracy.

“Any nation that does not have the legislature is either under monarchy or military dictatorship.

“The Army, the Police, the Directorate of State Security Services should all rise to the occasion.

“Every day you hear about killings by herdsmen and about armed robbers. So, there is no security anymore and Nigerians are worried and afraid.

According to him, the police should be overhauled and more personnel employed and trained, this will take more unemployed graduates out of the streets.

He also called for better funding and remunerations for the security agencies in order to motivate them. (NAN)
