Ilorin, Oct. 10, 2017 (NAN)  Mr Yusuf Salihu, a senior official of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), has called on parents to invest in children’s education and skills acquisition in order to curb social vices.

Salihu, who is the Deputy Superintendent of the Corps (DSC), made this call in Ilorin on Tuesday while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

The DSC said parents had a role to play in moulding the character of children, identifying lack of proper parenting as one of the factors responsible for the increasing rate of social vices in the country.

“Children with no education can be easily lured into bad habits, as they accept every offer that comes their way as a means of survival.

“Parents must not pay a lip service to the education of their children. It is the parents’ responsibility to train their children to enable them acquire formal education and skills.

“Social vices such as robbery, kidnapping, rape, drug and hemp smoking are increasing daily because of lack of education among children,” he said.

He also called on government at all levels to provide job opportunities for the youth through empowerment to help reduce criminal acts.

“In order to reduce social vices in our environment, children’s education and training must be given a priority attention,” Salihu added.  (NAN)
