Lagos, Oct. 5, 2017 (NAN) The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has instituted an easy competition for students of tertiary institutions to commemorate the 2017 World Maritime Day Celebration.

The Head of Corporate Communication of NIMASA, Mr Isichei Osamgbi, said this in a statement on Tuesday in Lagos.

The World Maritime Day Celebration is scheduled to hold on Oct. 30.

The Director-General of NIMASA, Dr Dakuku Peterside said that the idea of the essay competition was to stimulate youths interest and intellectual discourse in harnessing the potential of the maritime industry.

“If we say that the youths are the future of tomorrow, we must get them quickly interested and even involved in proffering solution to some of the challenges that affect our
country.

“This competition will therefore provide the platform where students will provide their perspectives on how Nigeria can turn the potential in the maritime environment into opportunities that will unlock the vast wealth in our blue economy.

“The essay competition will not only contribute to the robust discourse on realising the potential of the blue economy but is also an opportunity for the agency to support scholarship through the education grant,“ Peterside said.

The essay competition titled: “Connecting Ship, Ports and People“, which is also the theme of the 2017 World Maritime Day, will be written with not more than 1,200 words.

According to the statement, the essay competition is for only first and second year students of tertiary institutions and the students must provide proof of studying at that level.

“The winning prizes include Education Grant of N500, 000 for the first position, N350, 000 for the runner up and N250, 000 for the third position with a laptop computer for each winner.

“There will also be consolation prizes of N100, 000 for seven different participants,“ it said.  (NAN)
